It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rabbi Fabian Schonfeld zt”lrov emeritus of Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills in Queens, NY. He was 96 years old; he would have turned 97 tomorrow.

Rabbi Schonfeld was born in December of 1923 to Samuel and Manja (Oskenhendler) Schonfeld. He attended university in London, where he graduated in 1945, and came over to the United States in 1950, attending Yeshiva University and graduating in 1952.

Rabbi Schonfeld assumed the position of rov of the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills in 1951, serving with distinction for decades as a beloved rov and leader. He also served as a rebbi at Yeshiva University and was one of the founders of Vaad Harabbonim of Queens.

Rabbi Schonfeld, who was perhaps the oldest member of the American Orthodox rabbinate, was the pioneer of Orthodox Jewish life in Kew Gardens Hills, responsible for the teaching and spreading of Torah Yiddishkeit in that section of Queens and beyond

Rabbi Schonfeld served on numerous rabbinic and communal boards throughout his long rabbinic career.

Rabbi Schonfeld married his wife, Charlotte, nee Jakobovits, in 1944.  Charlotte passed away in 1959. Rabbi Schonfeld remarried in 1961 to his wife, Ruth, nee Leifer. Rebbetzin Ruth had also been widowed at a young age, and together, the rov and rebbetzin joined forces and built a beautiful home that was open to one and all. Rebbetzin Ruth was a daughter of the Nadvorna Rebbe, Rav Shalom Leifer zt”l, who was a son of Rav Bertche of Nadvorna.

Both the rov and rebbetzin had four children at the time of their marriage.

Rabbi Schonfeld is survived by his children, Rabbi Yoel Schonfeld, Rabbi Aryeh Schonfeld, R’ Yosef Schindelhein, Mrs. Aviva Pinchuk, Mrs. Vicky Berglas, Mrs. Debby Wolfe, Mrs. Phyllis Schwartz, Mrs. Georgie London, Mrs. Tammy Koppel, and Mrs. Debby Spero; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
