Turkish leader draws ire of Paris after saying Macron needs 'mental checks' over his treatment of Muslims

France recalled its envoy to Turkey for consultations in a spat over Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's remarks on his French counterpart, AFP reported on Saturday.

In his televised address on Saturday, Erdogan lambasted President Emmanuel Macron over his treatment of Muslims following the deadly stabbing attack in France that saw a teacher decapitated after showing cartoons depicting Prophet Mohammad in class.

In the wake of the brutal terrorist act, Macron spearheaded a campaign to protect France's secular values against radical Islam -- much to the Turkish leader's spite.

"What can one say about a head of state who treats millions of members from different faith groups this way: first of all, have mental checks," Erdogan proclaimed, as cited by the AFP.

He doubled down on the personal attack by suggesting Macron needed treatment and saying the French leader would hardly remain at the helm after the 2020 elections.
