BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.
The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

Scientists have gathered some of the most compelling evidence yet for the existence of water on the moon – and it may be relatively accessible. The discovery has implications for future missions to the moon and deeper space exploration.
With no significant atmosphere insulating it from the sun’s rays, it had been assumed that the moon’s surface was dry – until the 1990s, when orbiting spacecraft found indications of ice in large and inaccessible craters near the moon’s poles.
The existence of water has implications for future lunar missions because it could be treated and used for drinking; separated into hydrogen and oxygen for use as a rocket propellant, and the oxygen could be used for breathing.

During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1 and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion, and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments. They put their hands on their property and their daughters. They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean. The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them. Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them and saved the Jews from their hands. They appointed a king from the Priests, and the kingdom of Israel was restored for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple). When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them, it was the 25th of Kislev2 when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple, except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest, and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only. But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days, until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil. For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation that these eight days that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise. One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses, every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle. These days are called ''Hanukah'' that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month) because on the 25th they rested from their enemies. and also because of those days they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled. Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah. Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days. One should tell one's children the story of the miracles that were done for our fore-fathers in those days, (see Josephus) However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment unless one says at the meal songs of praise. One should increase charity in these Hanukah days, for this can help mend any defects in our souls. This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1) 1) 352 BCE until 70 CE 2) 139 BCE 3) The Menorah was made of gold and had seven branches.
British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca on Monday said its potential Covid-19 vaccine has produced a similar immune response in older and younger adults.
AstraZeneca, which is developing its potential Covid-19 vaccine in collaboration with the University of Oxford, said adverse responses to the vaccine among the elderly were also found to be lower.
The World Health Organization has said that older people, in addition to people of all ages with preexisting medical conditions, appear to develop serious illness on contracting the coronavirus more often than others.

A four-month investigative report by Newsweek found that roughly 600 groups are engaging in a widespread meddling campaign tied to the Chinese Communist Party and seeking to influence the U.S. well beyond next Tuesday’s election.
“The scope of alleged activities is enormous, involving social and business gatherings, extensive information campaigns and building political and economic ties that can be leveraged to Beijing’s gain — recent reports of Hunter Biden’s business dealings with a Chinese energy company eager to connect with his father and President Trump’s secret Chinese bank account are just the latest high-profile examples that some China watchers find worrisome,” Newsweek’s Didi Kirsten Tatlow wrote.
President Donald Trump could focus his remaining campaign days on the coronavirus, his successes with the economy, and on the “corruption” that has been revealed about the Democratic Party’s nominee Joe Biden and his family, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday.
If Trump focuses on those three topics, “he will win a surprisingly big election,” Gingrich said on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends.”
“It’s very simple,” Gingrich said. “He’s got to win the argument that what we have done on COVID has worked. Look, Spain just went into an emergency shutdown until next April. Italy has announced no restaurants…Trump has done a much better job than these other countries.”

Joe Biden said Saturday that Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett, President Trump’s choice to succeed liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg, wants to overturn Obamacare.
A number of Democratic senators pressed Barrett about her stance on the Affordable Care Act during confirmation hearings, but she refused to give any indication of how she might rule.
“Trump’s dream of wiping out Obamacare off the books is well underway because his [Supreme Court] nominee has said in the past the law should be struck down,” Biden said at a rally in Bristol, Pa. “If they get their way, over 100 million Americans, including 5.3 million Pennsylvanians, will lose their protections for preexisting conditions that we...

BROOKLYN (VINnews/Sandy Eller) -It was an exhilarating moment for the women of Ezras Nashim as they took delivery of their long awaited ambulance on Sunday, their hard-fought legal battle to get a vehicle of their own finally coming to an end.
As previously reported on VIN News, the all-female Ezras Nashim emergency medical corps was approved by the New York State Emergency Medical Services Council to operate its own ambulance in August, overriding an October 2019 denial handed down by the New York City Regional Emergency Medical Council.
White with vivid purple stripes, the ambulance bears the Ezras Nashim logo in both English and Hebrew. Two letters of rabbinical approval are painted onto the 2020 Ford Transit’s rear windows, including one signed 40 years ago by Rabbi Refo...
BROOKLYN (VIN/Sandy Eller) – Emotions ran high at a Thursday night Zoom meeting to discuss Brooklyn’s ongoing lockdown, with a rare display of anger from elected officials over changes in the way COVID data is being reported to the public.
Hamodia (https://bit.ly/3osS6Q4) reported that multiple city officials participated in the conference call including Deputy Health Commissioner Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, Vice President of New York City Health + Hospitals Dr. Ted Long and more than twenty representatives of both the Department of Health and City Hall.

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Israel recently signed a peace treaty with the tiny gulf state of Bahrain, but the process which proceeded the treaty was less known until recently. An Israeli politician recently revealed that the catalyst for the warming of relations between Israel and Bahrain was a life-saving operation performed in secret on a Bahraini princess who visited Israel in 2010. The successful operation opened the door to future cooperation between Israel and Bahrain which culminated in the normalization of relations between the countries last month.
In 2016, Israeli Likud Knesset member Ayoub Kara, who served as Deputy Minister for Regiona Cooperation, revealed that Israel had secretly provided treatment for a member of the Bahraini royal family, Princess Fatima Bint Khalifa and ...
NEW YORK (VINnews) — Senator Kamala Harris, (D-CA) who has been chosen as Joe Biden’s running mate in his bid for the US presidency, has in the past endorsed and actively supported an American Muslim organization, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) which is unabashedly anti-Israel, supports BDS and has in the past been linked with the Holy Land foundation which was indicted for its support of terror group Hamas. According to a report by the Washington Beacon, “as California’s attorney general and then as U.S. senator, Harris forged a relationship with CAIR.”
The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) President Morton A. Klein and Chair Mark Levenson, Esq. has called on Harris to repudiate CAIR for its blatant anti-Israel stance.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will administer the official constitutional oath to Judge Amy Coney Barrett on Monday night if she is confirmed by the Senate, a senior White House official told Fox News.
Thomas has long been considered one of the more conservative justices on the Court, along with Barrett's mentor, the late Justice Antonin Scalia. The would-be celebration of her confirmation won't be a large affair, President Trump said, noting that it will be "just a very nice event."
Trump made those comments to reporters on Monday at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Pennsylvania, Politico reported. The president has been holding rallies in the swing state as part of a final push to win support for next ...

London-based Institute for Jewish Policy Research puts the Jewish population of the continent, including Britain, Russia and Turkey, at the same number cited by famed traveler Benjamin of Tudela in 1170.
The number of Jews in Europe, including Britain, Turkey and Russia, has fallen to a 1,000-year low, according to a new study conducted by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research in London and published on Sunday.
According to the study, only 1.3 million people currently live in Europe who define themselves as Jews. This is the same number counted by famous Jewish traveler and scholar Benjamin of Tudela in 1170.
The study shows that since 1970, Europe has lost about 60 percent of its Jewish population. In 1970, there were 3.2 million Jews living in Europe. According to the study, 1.5 ...
