Baltimore, MD - Mar. 30, 2020 - Once again, Bikur Cholim hosted a community conference call to help answer the myriad questions we all have during this ongoing crisis.

Bikur Cholim of Baltimore would like to thank Drs. Ron Samet, Yoel Jakobovits, Jonathan Ringo, Netanel Schwob, Dov Frankel, and Daniel Grove for their vital and informative information to the community on COVID-19 virus. Over 200 people from the community participated in last night's conference call to listen to instruction and advice from these very special physicians.  For those of you who were unable to call in or for a recap, please see the audio link below which has the recording of the event in its entirety.

The doctors tackled questions in the four most troubling areas (a few samples below):

  • Symptoms

o   So far, I can’t smell, and I have a headache-- both symptoms of the virus.  Can I cook for others?

o   I heard loss of taste and smell is a symptom.  If that is the only symptom how long do I need to be in quarantine?

  • Self-isolation and quarantine

o   What exactly defines self-isolation? I have been getting deliveries and doing curbside pickup.  Am I still considered quarantined?

o   If the mother and kids have been home for 14 days and the father has gone to work, does this nullify the quarantine?

o   How long do you need to quarantine with a cough?  If it lingers past the fever is the person still considered contagious 72 hours after fever subsides?

  • Transmission of items

o   Can you review the different surfaces and how long the virus stays alive, i.e. plastic containers, metal, plastic bags, boxes from stores, mail, papers, etc.

o   How concerned should we be about packages and groceries being brought into our homes?  Is it necessary to wipe down each package?   What about our mail? Can it come in on clothing?

o   Should we avoid purchasing loose fruit that others may have touched?  How should we wash produce - bagged and loose?

  • Pesach guests

o   People are still talking about letting their out of town children come for Pesach saying they have self-isolated at home and they will quarantine in the parents’ house so it is not a danger to the community.  Can you please address this?

o   Can people who have been at home for 14 days get together with family who has also been home for 14 days?  Is it the same for friends?

o   What about my kids that live down the street? Can they come?

  • Miscellaneous

o   Can I go to the barber?

o   Is it safe to be outside?  Can the air carry the virus?

Bikur Cholim of Baltimore will continue to forward your questions to our very caring physicians and email their responses back to you as quickly as we can. Please email all questions to info@baltimorebikurcholim.org.

Bikur Cholim is very grateful for our physicians who gave so generously of their time, concern, and expertise. We also wish to recognize Yaakov Berkowitz and Rabbi Elchanan Ciment for organizing and manning the conference call, and Bonnie Pollak for collecting and distributing the many questions that came pouring in.

May Hashem keep you all safe and well during these challenging times.
