BDE: Double Tragedy In Bnei Brak
A family from the predominantly haredi city of Bnei Brak in central Israel was hit by a double tragedy this week, when a young father died suddenly just days after the death of his infant son. Thirty-one-year-old Meir Weiss, a resident of Bnei Brak who had studied in the Mir Yeshiva’s Brachfeld campus in Modi’in Illit, was mourning the death of his half-year-old son on Sunday when he collapsed – and died. Weiss’ son died last Thursday in his crib, in an apparent case of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The child was rushed to Mayanei Hayeshua hospital in Bnei Brak, but doctors were forced to declare the child dead. While mourning the child’s death at the Weiss family home in Bnei Brak, Meir Weiss suddenly collapsed, for reasons which remain unclear. Rea...

EL AL Boeing 787 Hits Power Pole At Las Vegas Airport
The return flight to Israel was canceled, and El Al issued an apology for the incident and “the unpleasantness caused to our customers.” An El Al Boeing Dreamliner 787 hit a power pole at Las Vegas Airport on Saturday, causing severe damage to one of the wings, in addition to a power outage at the airport. The El Al plane flew Friday night from Ben-Gurion Airport, landing in Las Vegas. An investigation found that following the landing, airport employees allegedly refused to wait and guide the towing of the plane towards the jet bridge. This ultimately caused the plane to strike an electric pole. Due to the damage caused to the year-old airplane, it was grounded for repairs, leading to disruption to El Al’s flight schedule in the upcoming weeks. The plane was...

Comey Admits Error In Defense Of FBI's FISA Process After IG Report: 'He Was Right, I Was Wrong'
Former FBI Director James Comey admitted on "Fox News Sunday" that the recently released Justice Department Inspector General’s report on the launch of the FBI’s Russia investigation and their use of the surveillance process showed that he was "overconfident" when he defended his former agency's use of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). This comes days after IG Michael Horowitz’s report and testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee detailed concerns that included 17 “significant errors and omissions” by the FBI’s investigative team when applying for a FISA warrant to monitor former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. Horowitz referred “the entire chain of command” to the FBI and DOJ for “ho...

BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.

The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

Probe Of Jersey City Shooting Leads FBI To Arrest Pawn Shop Owner On Weapons Charge
The FBI on Saturday arrested a pawnshop owner on a weapons charge after investigators said they found a note with his phone number and business address on one of the gunmen in the deadly shooting at a kosher grocery in Jersey City last week. Searches of Ahmed A-Hady’s home and store in Keyport, N.J., turned up a cache of ammunition and guns, including three “AR-15-style assault rifles” similar to one of the weapons used in the attack, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court. Officials did not definitively link A-Hady to the shooting but said the searches were “connected to one of the perpetrators.” The 35-year-old was charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and was slated to appear before a jud...

Gideon Sa’ar Calls On PM Netanyahu To Hold A Debate
Senior Likud MK Gideon Sa’ar on Saturday night called on Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to debate him. On the “Mahadurat Hashabbat” show, Sa’ar said, “I call on Netanyahu to hold a debate – like they do in the US.” “I think that Likud members deserve to hear content as well – what each of us is offering regarding Gaza, the health and social reforms. I think that this is appropriate, just like this happens in the entire Western world. I’ll accommodate Netanyahu’s schedule.” Read more at Arutz Sheva.

Hilchos Chanukah

During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1  and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion,  and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments.  They put their hands on their property and their daughters.  They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean.  The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them.  Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them  and saved the Jews from their hands.  They appointed a king from the Priests,  and the kingdom of Israel was restored  for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple).  When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them,  it was the 25th of Kislev2  when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple,  except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest,  and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only.  But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days,  until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil.  For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation  that these eight days  that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise.  One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses,  every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle.  These days are called ''Hanukah''  that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month)  because on the 25th they rested from their enemies.  and also because of those days  they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled.  Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah.  Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days.  One should tell one's children the story of the miracles  that were done for our fore-fathers in those days,  (see Josephus)  However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment  unless one says at the meal songs of praise.  One should increase charity in these Hanukah days,  for this can help mend any defects in our souls.  This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1)

Successful Heart Surgery Using Sound Waves Takes Place for First Time in Israel
A cardiac catheterization using sound waves was successfully performed for the first time in Israel on Sunday by the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. The procedure was done to treat a complex case of severe arterial congestion, reported the Tazpit News Agency. The 66-year-old patient had calcium build-up, and doctors used special equipment developed by SHOCKWAVE after a previously performed catheterization failed to help the issue. The treatment consists of “the deployment of a tiny balloon filled with fluid and tiny balls at the point where there is a build-up of calcium within the artery,” according to Tazpit. “After the balloon is in place, sound waves are triggered to create a rapid movement of the balls which create cracks in the calcium inside the artery...

Parshas VaYishlach - Sometimes Vateizei is Good!

Vateizei Dina.  And Dina went out.  Today, the mere words conjure up thoughts of negativity and of the recklessness of Dina in venturing out of the protective environment of her home.  Indeed, it is hard to find many words in the Torah which have drawn such a magnitude of interpretation, most which use this tragic episode as a warning against women straying to far into the outside world.  As is often the case though, those who use a tragedy to advance an agenda are often missing the more profound lesson which can be found with a simple reading of our most trusted commentary, Rashi.

Rashi comments that Dina is referred to as “Bas Leah” but not “Bas Yaakov” since Leah too had “gone out”.  Rashi (Vayishlach 34:1).  Rashi is referring to the famous episode where Rochel purchased the Dudaim - flowers from Leah in exchange for her night with their husband, Yaakov.  The Pasuk goes on to say “Vateizi Leah Likraso”, And Leah went out to meet him.  Chazal tell us that Leah went out to lead Yaakov to her tent so Rochel would not have to explain that she had traded her night with Yaakov for some flowers.  Leah’s going out was clearly L’shem Shamayim and Rashi explains her reward was that Yissachar, a great Torah scholar, was conceived that night.  (Rashi, 30:17) Further proof of Leah’s status as an exemplary Baalas Tznius comes from Shiras D’vorah, where all of the Imahos are praised for their Tznius.  (Shoftim 5:24)

It is inescapable that the mida of “going out” is not intrinsically good or bad.  Like every mida, it can be used in a multitude of ways.  Leah used this mida to save Rochel some embarrassment and remained at her lofty level.  Dina was not so fortunate.  Regardless of what her motives were, the results were horrific.  What then did Dina learn from Leah which could have led to such a catastrophe?

Children naturally copy their parents’ behavior.  Dina saw that her mother Leah exhibited this characteristic of being “worldly” or someone who was comfortable being out in the world.  Nevertheless, she did not understand that Leah’s motivation for doing so was always L’sheym Shamayim and never inconsistent with her status as one of our Imahos.   How profound.  Children often see what their parents do but do not always comprehend the intent of the parent behind the action.  Whatever middos we and our children possess, proper chinuch requires that we must always emphasize the fundamental obligation to use them in a positive way.

“Vatezei Dina” personifies this lesson.  It is not about going out or staying in, rather it is about understanding our obligations everywhere, all the       time to do things for the right reasons.  Perhaps if we spent less time labeling different midos and activities as “good” or “bad”, we would be Zoche to instill in our children the simple goal of using all of our Kochos to be M’kadesh Shaym Shamayim.  In this way we can truly aspire to reach the level of our Imahos.

Man Charged With Threatening To Shoot Republican Congressman Says He Was Enraged By TV Ad
A man faces federal charges for allegedly threatening to kill a Republican congressman after he says he was enraged by a political ad and accused the Republican representative of “backing the Russians over our own intelligence.” Randall E. Tarr, 64, is accused of threatening Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., in a profane voice mail in which he says he just saw Davis on TV, according to a criminal complaint. Identifying himself as an eight-year military veteran and “sharpshooter,” the Rochester, Illinois, resident said he would like to shoot Davis’ “head off,” the complaint states. The 64-year-old could receive up to 15 years in prison if convicted of communicating a threat to injure a person and making a threat to a federal official. FBI officials inter...

Man Arrested Over Antisemitic Abuse On London Bus
LONDON (VINnews) – A man has been arrested by police investigating a hate crime attack after a bus passenger was subjected to antisemitic abuse, The Guardian reports. The 36-year-old victim was reading a prayer book while travelling on the 254 bus towards Aldgate on 6 December when another man boarded near Stamford Hill in Hackney, north-east London. The suspect made a number of antisemitic comments to the victim before also verbally abusing a group of teenage girls also on the bus, according to police. When the first victim tried to intervene, he was punched in the arm. Police were called and the victim got off in the Stamford Lodge area but the suspect could not be found. Former Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon Seeking Same Job Again
The number of people running for mayor of Baltimore continues to grow. Democrat Sheila Dixon on Saturday officially entered the race for the job she once held but gave up in 2010 as part of a plea deal for misappropriating about $500 in gift cards meant for needy families. Dixon is the latest to declare the intent to unseat Mayor Bernard “Jack” Young. She made the announcement during a community event to gather winter clothing for families in need. Young automatically became mayor when Catherine Pugh resigned from that job in May amid investigations into the lucrative sales of her self-published children’s books. She pleaded guilty last month to federal conspiracy and tax evasion charges in a case centered on sales of her “Healthy Holly” books to nonprofits...

Internal Audit: No UMMS Executive Read 'Healthy Holly' Books Before Paying Pugh $500,000
There is no evidence a University of Maryland Medical System executive read a "Healthy Holly" book before paying former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh $500,000 for the books, a forensic audit finds. The medical system commissioned the internal forensic audit in September. The audit looked into the backgrounds and financial interests of 40 board members and system leadership from 2016 through June 2019. “There is no question the past conduct undertaken by certain former corporate officers and board members was extremely problematic and damaged the reputation of the System," the audit committee's chair, Jason Frankl, said in a statement. "This investigation was executed to ensure full accountability and transparency as the System moves forward from the troubling events that were...

BPD Seeks Public Comment On Proposed Staffing Plan
Baltimore police seek public comment on a new staffing plan. WBAL-TV 11 reports the draft of the plan was posted online in accordance with the federal consent decree. The plan would institute new staffing levels at all nine patrol districts and the use of a civilian stance. “When completed, the staffing plan will give us a much better idea than we have ever had of how best to utilize our most important resource -- our people," Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said. "In doing so, it will make us a significantly more effective and efficient police department, which will be good for everyone: individual officers, the department as a whole and the city." This is the first of two public comment periods. The department will consider feedback before sending its plan to...

New Parking Meters Coming To Baltimore, Making It Easier To Pay
BALTIMORE — Visitors to parts of downtown Baltimore will now notice something a little different about the parking meters. The Parking Authority of Baltimore unveiled new parking meters under the Jones Falls Expressway where the Farmer's Market takes place every Sunday. So far, the Parking Authority replaced 70 of the multi-space meters and soon, there will be around 900 of them. The new meters don't require you to take out a paper ticket. Instead, you have to pay using your license plate number. "So, the reason for entering your license plate into these new meters is so that you don't have to display that receipt in your windshield. Once you have entered your license plate and paid for parking, that information gets communicated to parking enforcement's handh...

Israel: 16 Arrested During Protests Against Shabbos Buses
Dozens of protesters gathered in Israel’s religious town of Bnei Brak on Shabbos to demonstrate against newly offered bus services available on Shabbos.
