The summer travel season has arrived and the Transportation Security Agency is expecting the number of travelers passing through Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport to be the highest in years.

This, as the Maryland Department of Transportation reminds people it is more important than ever to get your Real ID.

The TSA is projecting more than 263 million passengers and crew members will pass through security checkpoints at airports around the country this summer. For that reason, officials are reminding folks to get to the airport early.

"People who travel during the summer oftentimes are traveling with their children and that tends to slow people down which can cause a little longer line at the checkpoint," Lisa Farbstein, TSA spokeswoman, said.

Passengers can expect to see new display screens educating them on how to move through quickly and providing estimated wait times.

"We're very prepared to manage those crowds, but we also want to advise our customers to prepare to deal with the congestion, as well," said Ricky Smith, executive director of the Maryland Aviation Administration.

The MDOT is also reminding passengers now is the perfect time to make an appointment to get a Real ID driver's license. As come Oct. 1, 2020, they will need one to board a flight.

"With that Oct. 1, 2020 deadline in mind MDOT MVA are listening to our customers' feedback and trying to make the process simple as possible," said MDOT MVA administrator Chrissy Nizer.

"The TSA officer is going to tell you, unfortunately, 'You do not have an acceptable ID, I cannot let you get past this area to catch your flight,'" Farbstein said.
