Baltimore, MD - Mar. 12, 2019 - The passing of Andy Klein leaves a large void in the local grocery community and the Jewish Community. He held leadership roles in many charitable causes around his hometown of Harford County as well as in the broader Jewish Community.

Growing up as a local grocer, Andy was President of the Klein’s Shoprite chain consisting of 9 locations. The company, founded in 1927 as Klein’s General Store, is continuously giving back to the communities they serve. This sense of giving seems to be engrained within the Klein family – beginning with Andy’s parents Ralph and Shirley Klein who were large donors of medical institutions in the area.

Along with his brothers and business partners Michael and Howard, Andy provided jobs to thousands of people. The Klein family expanded their business holdings to include commercial real estate development and supported local and national politicians as well. I recall being at a JNF dinner in the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. and hearing Andy sing Hatikvah at the start of the event.

It is rare that a family business survives 4 generations, however the Klein family does it very well with their 4th generation! Andy’s family are proud members of the Maryland Food Industry Hall of Fame.

Andy will be sorely missed.
