Alcohol was believed to have contributed to the deadly crash, according to Maryland State Police.

FREDERICK COUNTY, MD — A Pikesville man was killed Saturday morning in a crash in Frederick County, according to Maryland State Police. A total of three vehicles were involved in the crash, officials reported.

Oguier F. Afanador Benjumea, 38, of Pikesville, was pronounced deceased at the scene on Interstate 70 in the area of Harmony Road, police said. He had been driving a 2011 Toyota Tacoma, according to authorities.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police said Benjumea had been headed west on I-70 when his truck left the highway around 4:52 a.m. on Saturday, July 14. The truck drove off the left side of the road, went onto the center median and hit the guardrail before rolling back onto the interstate, where it came to rest in the two left lanes on I-70 west.

Because of the way the truck was situated on its side, police said its lights were not visible to other drivers on the road. Two vehicles hit the truck, police said.

A Ford Focus tried to swerve but hit the back of the truck, sending it spinning, at which point the truck was hit by another vehicle; authorities said a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe rammed into the truck's roof area.

The man driving the Focus was uninjured, according to officials, who reported the man and woman in the Santa Fe were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Police said Benjumea was dead at the scene of the crash, in which alcohol was believed to have been a factor.

Two lanes on I-70 west were closed for 75 minutes, according to police, who said the investigation concluded and both lanes had reopened by 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 14.
