Baltimore, MD - Jan. 5, 2021 - Yes, that is a smile under my mask.

Very late to the game, but overjoyed to finally make it to this day after enduring nearly a year of this pandemic.

I'm posting this picture as many of my colleagues have in order to encourage everyone to get this vaccine as soon as you possibly can.

There is only one way out of this pandemic, and that is to stop the spread through vaccination. In the history of infectious diseases (unless an infection is seasonal, climate sensitive, or is spread through lack of sanitation such as cholera), no infection has simply gone away on its own without vaccination.

There is no such thing as herd immunity without vaccination.

The vaccines approved are safe, well studied, and effective. The Pfizer vaccine I received was studied in a clinical trial that included 30,000 people. Yes, it uses a novel mechanism of action, but the technology itself has been studied for years. Over two million people have been safely vaccinated in the United States thus far, and many more around the world.

The vaccine can have side effects, but these are virtually all very minor and short lived. In contrast, SARS-CoV-2 infection has killed at least 1 in 1000 people and also has many long term effects. A very large number of people who recover from COVID-19 continue to show long term symptoms including fatigue, depression, brain fog, chronic cough, prolonged loss of taste and smell, and more.

Like all things in medicine, there is a risk vs benefit calculation, and the risks are far far greater in SARS-CoV-2 infection than they are for the vaccine.

I am thankful to G-D for providing us with this prevention, and thankful to the men and women scientists who devoted their lives and many sleepless nights to make this possible. Please get vaccinated in order to protect yourself, your loved ones, your community, and the world.
