Baltimore, MD - Sept. 24, 2024:
Dear Reb Eli,
Many people send in email's saying that the shiur "changed their lives."
While it sounds nice and dramatic, it's also not true. Take that last sentence with a grain of salt, and a heaping tablespoon of sugar!
You see, when someone finds an avenue to connect to Hashem and grow in his Avodas Hashem, that is not called a "change" in their lives. Rather, it's called a discovery of their lives!
The avoda of a Jew is not to change our lives; more deeply, our avoda is to discover , unearth and reveal the true aspects of greatness, gadlus, purity and holiness that already exist within us.
What the shiur provides for so many (myself included!) is an opportunity to connect to who we really are already at our core. The shiur has allowed us to chip away at the "other" stuff and reveal what's really on the inside.
There's a well-known tale about the artist Michelangelo. He was asked about the difficulties that he must have encountered in sculpting his masterpiece, called "David." He responded, "It is actually easy. All I have to do is chip away at all the parts that are not David."
We have goodness and holiness within. We just have to chisel away the superfluous materialism.
This is what Teshuva is all about. It's not about changing who we are. Again, we are not meant to "change" our lives. Teshuva means return. We are returning and relocating to that inner state of truth, goodness and holiness.
The MDY shiur is not life changing. It is so much deeper than that. The MDY shiur is life discovering and life revealing!
Thank you,
Ori Strum
