A Republican member of the Maryland State Board of Election is facing charges in connection with the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
According to the charging documents, Carlos Alberto Ayala is accused of climbing over barricades at the Capitol building and helping break into the Senate area. Prosecutors also say Ayala encouraged officers to "join us" as he stormed the building.
The chair of the Board of Elections released a statement, saying that Ayala resigned and that "The board is committed to maintaining the security and integrity of our elections in Maryland in a non-partisan manner."
