Baltimore, MD - Nov. 9, 2023 -  For a better understanding of what to expect, please review this memorandum sent to all employees and medical staff of the University of Maryland Hospital Downtown:

Dear UMMC Colleagues:

Please be aware that an afternoon protest regarding the Middle East conflict is expected in Baltimore this afternoon. Our understanding is that protestors will begin gathering at 3 pm, with the march scheduled from 5 – 6 pm, proceeding down MLK Boulevard from W. Mulberry Street to W. Baltimore St. Your travel in and out of the area surrounding UMMC Downtown Campus and UMB may be affected.

The Maryland Transit Administration advises that it may make rapid schedule adjustments to adapt to changing circumstances, and traffic interruptions may occur at certain intersections during and after the march. Consequently, public transportation travel may also be impacted.

These protests are anticipated to be entirely peaceful, but we want to emphasize that the safety of our workforce, medical staff, patients, and their families is our top priority. The UMMC security team at both hospital campuses remains in close contact with city, state, and other law enforcement agencies to coordinate responses to our needs. We will keep you informed of any developments throughout the day.

We encourage you to monitor local news and traffic reports for information regarding potential impacts on your commute. Additionally, please do not hesitate to contact Security if you would like an escort as you arrive at or depart from work. UMMC Security will provide walking escorts to individuals who request them, offering a level of comfort and security.
