Baltimore, MD - July 5, 2023 - A large gathering called "Brooklyn Day" at the Brooklyn Homes in Baltimore City ended tragically with 28 young people shot, two killed, reports The Baltimore Banner. Authorities describe the event as "unsanctioned" or "non-sponsored," with law enforcement agencies unaware of its occurrence until too late. Despite calls to the police about disturbances, armed individuals, and potential shootings, authorities didn't respond timely. The delay in police response has been criticized by residents and attributed to operational and intelligence lapses. The city's administration emphasized focusing on finding the perpetrators and supporting the traumatized community.

The Brooklyn Homes complex, where the incident occurred, is a public housing development with a history of high vacancy rates, limited resources, and high crime rates. The lack of consistent leadership in the Tenant Council is noted as the event was organized in an ad hoc manner. Both the Housing Authority and the Mayor's Office have denied any responsibility for the tragic events, although Safe Streets, a part of the city's community safety and engagement agency, were present to de-escalate conflicts at the gathering.

In response to the event, the city has deployed a variety of resources for trauma counseling, housing services, health services, rental and utility assistance, employment assistance, and recreational activities. However, residents and community leaders argue that better policing and communication could have prevented the tragedy.
