2010 Summer Three-Weeks Lecture Series by Rabbi Dovid Katz Cossacks & Jews, 1648-1649 Expelled by the Europeans at the end of the Middle Ages, Ashkenazic Jews found a hospitable home in the vast empire of Poland in the sixteenth century. Here they prospered and created a Golden Age of Jewish Culture, the era of the Rema and the Maharsha. Just when things looked good, a holocaust of unimaginable horrors burst upon their heads.
