We know that days of the year are established by days and nights cycling. The question arises is the fact that there are days and nights the cause for days in the calendar or are they just a sign to determine it? Another question is: Are the days and nights caused by having the sun and moon out or are the sun and moon a sign of day and night?
We find on day one of creation that the light and darkness served together in a mixed fashion. This was before Hashem created on Wednesday the sun and moon and stars. From this fact we see that the sun coming up or going down does not cause day or night it is just a sign.
Another proof that it is only a siman not a sibah is from the mabul where there was no day and night. We see that after Noach brought his korbanos Hashem p...

In the weeks leading up to Simchas Torah, there was much discussion about how to have Simchas Torah this year, and how to balance celebrating the day properly, yet recognizing that it was the anniversary of a terrible tragedy and the beginning of a war that has impacted Klal Yisroel in so many ways.
Last year, in Yeshiva Ateres Shmuel of Waterbury, where many community members daven along with the Yeshiva and Kollel, the Simchas Torah was very moving. Levi, then a bochur in the Yeshiva, had been called up to service in the IDF, and as he left, the kehilla gathered around him singing and davening with the fear of the unknown on everyone's faces.
People were wondering “How will the hakafos be done this year?” As the hakafos got underway they were stronger than ever. Scores...

Of all the amazing, joyful and meaningful events on Sukkot, two powerful moments stand out in my mind. One was on the morning of Simchat Torah at the Ramada Hotel in Jerusalem. Over 100 survivors of the Nova festival-turned-massacre had gathered to celebrate the holiday together with the Kesher Yehudi organization. On the walls hung photos of those killed and kidnapped on that tragic day—friends close to their hearts.
One of the participants held a Torah scroll in his arms and danced with it, his face glowing. He said to me: “Last year, look where we danced. And today, look where we are dancing…”
Then came the Torah reading. Each person stood before the open Torah and recited a blessing. Many did so with tears in their eyes. At the conclusion of the Torah readi...

Jerusalem, Israel - Oct. 27, 2024 - Hundreds of people, including 190 survivors from the Nova Festival and ten hostage families danced again with the Torah in Jerusalem, Israel at the Ramada Hotel for hakafos shniyos.
The event was created at the specific request of the Nova survivors, who have attended Shabbatonim run by Kesher Yehudi in the past. They asked the organization to change plans, saying this is where they needed to be as they commemorate one year on the Hebrew calendar since Hamas’ horrific terror attack on Israel.
The survivors and hostage families celebrated the full Simchat Torah holiday in Jerusalem together with Kesher Yehudi staff, volunteers, and donors from abroad, as well as Rabbi Yedidya and Sivan Rahav Meir, Rabbi Colone...
This piece is dedicated in memory of Captain Rabbi Avi Goldberg HY”D, a true anav and tzaddik who fell in Lebanon earlier this week.
Completely Committed
Our mitzvah fulfillment is the most basic way we express our avodat Hashem. Our fulfillment ought to be both complete and deeply meaningful.
Breadth
Our commitment to mitzvot should be comprehensive — we should endeavor to observe all of His commandments.[1] Carelessness, even regarding one mitzvah, reflects a lack of commitment to Hashem’s Will.
Denial of the need to observe a mitzvah is even more problematic. In fact, it renders one a “mumar.” Though the term generally refers to the total abandonment of Judaism, Chazal[2] applied it to one who refuses to fulfill even one mitzvah because he, too, reje...
