Western powers have issued a joint statement Monday warning Iran and its allies to "refrain from attacks that would further escalate regional tensions" in the Middle East as they appear to soon be heading toward a breaking point.  Regional sources told Fox News foreign correspondent Trey Yingst on Monday that they are concerned Iran and its proxies could attack Israel within the next 24 hours in retaliation for the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran late last month. The message from France, Germany and the United Kingdom – which calls on Israel and Hamas to show "no further delay" in getting back to the negotiating table to hammer out a cease-fire and hostage release deal – also comes as Lebanon is bracing for a wider ...

How do we turn the most unpleasant day on the calendar into an uplifting experience? Tisha B’Av is almost upon us. Once again, it seems that we will spend 25 hours lamenting the loss of the Beit Hamikdash — the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. For the 1,954th year straight, we will grapple with the fact that the once-most-splendorous-place-in-the-world, which G-d refers to as His ‘footstool on earth’, is a place of ruin. The golden dome that sits atop the Temple Mount is but salt in the national wound we have borne for almost twenty centuries.  Frankly, it’s a difficult day for many people to embrace, for a variety of reasons.  Being almost two millennia away from the tragedy of the destruction makes it difficult to relate to. How does one mourn the loss...

The IDF on Monday named 12 more terrorists who it says were killed in its airstrike on the Al-Taabin school complex in the Daraj-Tuffah area of northern Gaza on Saturday, increasing the total number of named terrorists to 31. Initially, the IDF said that it could name at least 19 of 24 terrorists that it said it had killed and had known were for sure on location from its intelligence collection sources. Eventually, the IDF added that it had probably killed Islamic Jihad's brigade commander for central Gaza and disputed Hamas's claims that the airstrike had also killed over 90 civilians. Civilian casualty numbers haven't been addressed However, the IDF has not addressed how many civilians may have been killed, only saying that it would make no sense for its...
Overwhelming support from the St. Louis Jewish community turned out to be critical to St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell’s victory Tuesday over incumbent Rep. Cori Bush, a two-term progressive and outspoken critic of Israel. The primary race for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District drew national attention because of Political Action Committees such as AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) investing over $9 million to oppose Bush, who was one of the first to urge a ceasefire in Gaza following the attack by Hamas in Israel on Oct. 7 and also sought to cut aid to Israel. Locally, however, some credit Bell’s victory to grassroots efforts that unified St. Louis Jews across all denominations and political preferences.Rabbi Ze’ev Smason, chairman of...
“I’m fasting on Tisha B’Av for the first time this year,” a makeup artist told me yesterday in the TV studio. She isn’t alone. Many people will be fasting this year for the first time and there is no need to explain why. Last Shabbat, I met another young person who told me the same thing. More than 100 survivors of the Nova festival had come to spend a Shabbat together in Jerusalem. One participant, who lost several of her friends at the festival, told me that she has been waiting for Tisha B’Av so she can sit on the ground, cry, recite the kinot (lamentations), and feel the pangs of hunger from tonight (Monday) until Tuesday night. She had never felt any connection to the word churban (destruction)—it seemed to be from another world. But n...
Baltimore, MD - Aug. 12, 2024  - We would like to make the Olam HaTorah in Baltimore aware of a unique shiur which was given weekly by Maran HaRav Kulefsky זצוק"ל for over forty years and continues to be given by his son-in-law HaRav Dovid Rosenbaum שליט"א. Rav Kulefsky's weekly shiur covered a wide range of mesechtos b'iyun, and the current shiur continues to do so. We are now completing Maseches Eruchin and beginning Maseches Temurah. This is a wonderful opportunity for Bnei Torah to participate b'iyun in a Maseches of Seder Kodshim on a weekly basis. The shiur continues to be given at the Adas on Wednesday evenings at 8pm-9pm followed by Maariv.  Come and enjoy the beauty of Torah B'Iyun!

Palestinian terrorist group Hamas said on Sunday it had asked mediators to present a plan based upon past talks instead of engaging in new negotiations for a Gaza ceasefire deal. They said they agreed to the proposal by the mediators on May 6 and welcomed the UN Security Council Resolution 2735 - which calls on the terrorist group to accept a ceasefire deal but then accused Israel of rejecting it and saying that the country is not serious about a ceasefire deal. Hamas claims that they have been "keen to make the efforts of the mediators Egypt and Qatar successful to reach a ceasefire agreement." They have also claimed to have "provided all the necessary flexibility and positivity in order to achieve the goals and interests of our people." Claiming to have responded ...
Vice President Kamala Harris has displayed greater empathy for the people of Gaza than both President Joe Biden and Former President Donald Trump, according to Salima Suswell, the founder and chief executive of the Black Muslim Leadership Council Fund. Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly convinced Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to postpone the expected attack on Israel, according to the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida on Sunday. In addition, the US has reportedly opened a hotline with Iran, demanding Tehran delay its retaliation for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh by at least two weeks. Iran allegedly agreed, a result of the hotline opening over the weekend. The US also proposed mechanisms to close security loopholes following the killing, Al-Jarida said, in exchange for the Tehran refraining from retaliating against Israel. Israel has remained quiet on the targeted killing of the Hamas leader, even though it is widely blamed for his elimination. Pezeshkian was successful in his ...
The state may no longer subsidize daycare for children of full-time yeshiva students whose exemption from IDF service has expired, Deputy Attorney-General Gil Limon ruled on Sunday morning. The ruling will likely lead to a financial blow to thousands of haredi families just weeks before a new school year is set to begin, and Labor Minister Yoav Ben-Tzur (Shas) announced soon afterward that his ministry was holding a series of "emergency discussions" in order to examine the issue, which he said would cause "severe harm to families' financials since thousands of mothers will leave the workforce." Limon's ruling came after a series of legal issues arose following the High Court of Justice's ruling in June that haredim men were no longer exempt from ID...
Hamas head Yahya Sinwar allegedly wants a ceasefire deal, CNN reported, citing Israeli sources familiar with the subject.  According to the CNN report, the Egyptian and Qatari mediators informed Israeli officials of Sinwar’s stance in the last several days, ahead of a hostage negotiation summit later toward the end of the second week of August.  It is uncertain whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would accept a ceasefire deal, according to CNN. According to the prime minister’s allies, Netanyahu is ready to make a deal, regardless of how it impacts his coalition, two Israeli sources told CNN, however Israel’s security body is significantly more skeptical of his willingness due to opposition from far-right ministers ...
Jerusalem, Israel - Aug. 11, 2024  - MDA's 101 Emergency Call Center in the Gilboa region received a report of a shooting targeting two vehicles on Route 90 near the Mehola Junction. MDA paramedics and EMTs, in cooperation with IDF medical forces, responded to the scene. Initial reports indicated two casualties: a man in his 20s in critical condition and a 33-year-old man in moderate condition with gunshot wounds. Upon further assessment, the medical team, including MDA Senior EMT Matti Carmi, provided treatment at the scene. Unfortunately, the young man in his 20s, who was found unconscious in a separate vehicle, was pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries. The 33-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his lower limbs was stabilized and evacuated by an MDA-Hatzalah Ai...
