For many people, the commencement of Sefer Vayikra marks a distinct departure in the Torah from the telling of the history of the world and our becoming an Am, to the more technical details of the Avodas Hamishkan and Korbanos.  Indeed, without a Bais Hamikdash, it is all too easy to “read through” much of the Sefer as not relevant to our place in Galus.  After all, what possible use could we have for learning the difference between a Korban Tamid and a Korban Mincha or the precise method in which a Kohen was to sprinkle the blood from an offering?  Such an approach misses the obvious – Sefer Vayikra represents the same word of Hashem as Sefer Bereishis or Sh...

Alexander Pope wrote, “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” From the moment we are first introduced to Adam in the beginning of Genesis, it is clear that man is prone to falling and failing. In this week’s Parsha the Torah begins the lengthy section detailing sacrificial law. There are offerings brought for thanksgiving and celebration, and there are offerings brought for atonement in the aftermath of sin. There are sacrifices for the mistakes of the common man, and there are special sacrificial rites for the sins of the leader. “If a leader [of Israel] sins and unintentionally commits one of all the commandments of the Lord, which may not be committed, incurring guilt; if his sin that he has committed is made known to him, then he shall bring his offering: an un...
An Israeli child is born in a Ukrainian bomb shelter -- and United Hatzalah brings her home under fire ... A United Hatzalah volunteer scales a 12-foot-wall – and is the first to respond to the tragedy of Meron ... Eli Beer, founder of United Hatzalah, slips and breaks his leg racing to an emergency -- and manages to crawl to the choking child and save her life ... The amazing work of Israel’s United Hatzalah began, incredibly, when five-year-old Eli Beer witnessed a terror attack and dreamed of being the one to save the victim. While still a young teen, Eli set out to make that dream come true, creating an underground network of pioneering EMTs who were determined to bring their life-saving skills to victims in only 90 seconds, no matter where they were. Eli Beer’s book,...
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, this evening (Thursday, 23 March 2023), at the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem, made the following remarks: "Citizens of Israel, Several months ago, as soon as the results of the elections became known, I said: I intend to be the Prime Minister of all citizens of Israel. I meant it then and I also mean it today. We have one country and we must do everything to defend it from external threats, and from irreparable internal rifts. We cannot allow any disagreement, as sharp as it may be, to endanger our common future. Not only must we reject violence and hooliganism, we must also reject and condemn incitement and provocation. Opponents of the reform are not traitors; supporters of the reform are not fascists. The overwhelming majority of the ci...

Baltimore, MD - Mar. 23, 2023 - Please note that effective December 2022, STAR-K changed the status of the entire line of Ceres 100% Juice from "STAR-K Kosher for Passover" to STAR-K for year-round use only. This was due to a change in a processing aid used by the manufacturer that does not meet STAR-K's standards for Pesach. Consumers who find containers of Ceres Juice on store shelves bearing a STAR-K P symbol should note that while these items are no longer certified Kosher for Passover according to STAR-K standards, they are halachically Kosher for Pesach. New productions of Ceres Juice will bear only a STAR-K symbol.
The week began with a red-carpet reception, a celebration between what Chinese President Xi Jinping called "good neighbors and reliable partners." But to much of the rest of the world, it was a snapshot of an emboldened opposition. China’s apparent endorsement of Russia’s war in Ukraine was laid out in a hearing on Capitol Hill. Secretary of State Antony Blinken testified Thursday before a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee that, "when it comes to China, this is a generational challenge for us." China is spending more and more on its military, preparing for what many believe is an imminent goal — the invasion of Taiwan, where most of the world's semiconductor chips are manufactured. “Imagine if China invaded Taiwan tomorrow and controll...
The BWI Airport is getting $15 million in federal funds to upgrade some of the runway. Maryland's congressional representatives announced today that $15.6 million is going toward reconstructing 1,800 feet of aging "taxilane" pavement at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The funding is coming from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The lawmakers said in a collective statement:
“This federal investment in BWI, a vital economic and transportation hub for Maryland, underscores the importance of modernizing our airport infrastructure for the safe and efficient operation of our national aviation system into the future."
Baltimore, MD - Mar. 23, 2023 - Six construction workers killed in a crash on I-695 Wednesday have been identified by the police. All were contracted highway employees working on the inner loop near Security Boulevard in Woodlawn. Lisa Adrienna Lea, 54, lost control of her vehicle after hitting another while changing lanes, subsequently crashing into the construction zone and killing the workers. Lea is currently hospitalized at Shock Trauma, and it is unconfirmed whether speed was a factor. The Baltimore County State's Attorney is reviewing the case to determine if criminal charges should be filed.
Baltimore City Council president Nick Mosby believes the city should look at day laborers to fill some vacant city jobs. It's been more than a year since city sanitation had to roll back services like weekly recycling. Mosby told C4 and Bryan Nehman on Thursday that he endorses the bill to use day laborers to fill up to 700 vacancies at five different agencies, including the Department of Public Works, to help collect recycling and trash. He also noted that this would be a temporary fix. A city-commissioned study last year found the agency is short about 100 workers. At a hearing on Wednesday, department heads and labor union officials cited concerns over training and liability issues with using day workers.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is walking back his characterization of Russia’s war in Ukraine as a “territorial dispute,” following criticism from a number of fellow Republicans who expressed concern about the potential 2024 presidential candidate’s dismissive description of the conflict. In excerpts of an interview with Piers Morgan set to air Thursday on Fox Nation, DeSantis said his earlier comments referenced ongoing fighting in the eastern Donbas region, as well as Russia’s 2014 seizure of Crimea. Ukraine’s borders are internationally recognized, including by the United Nations. “What I’m referring to is where the fighting is going on now, which is that eastern border region Donbas, and then Crimea, and you ha...

Antisemitic incidents in the United States have reached the highest level ever recorded, according to a study by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Cases surged to historic levels in 2022. There were 3,697 incidents reported across the US last year, an increase of 36 percent compared to 2021, which was also a record-setting year. According to new data released this week in ADL’s Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, on average, 10 incidents took place for each day in 2022 – the highest level of antisemitic activity since ADL started keeping records in 1979. The trend follows an uptick of “hate and vitriol directed against the American Jewish community over the last five years,” ADL noted. The advocacy organization highlighted that this is the third time in the past fiv...
Georgia senators saved a measure to include the IHRA definition of antisemitism in the sate’s hate crimes law on Thursday, after it failed to pass the state Senate earlier in the week. The bill had been removed by its co-sponsors, state Reps. Esther Panitch and John Carson, after the Senate Judiciary Committee adopted an amendment from Senator Ed Setzler on Monday that altered the IHRA definition of antisemitism, replacing it with an explanation of antisemitism that defined discrimination against Jews as only the “negative perception of Jews instead of a ‘certain’ perception.'” “[Setzler] defines antisemitism as only the negative perception of Jews," Panitch said, according to Fox5. "There are plenty of positive perceptions of Jews that ...
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant will make a statement to the media this evening (Thursday) in which he will call for a halt to the legislation changing the composition of the judicial selection committee, which selects new justices for the Supreme Court. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to make an "important statement" at 8 pm tonight. Netanyahu was scheduled to fly to London this evening, but has pushed his flight back to 4 am tomorrow morning. Gallant and Prime Minister Netanyahu have held talks in the last two weeks which have been called "difficult." Gallant presented the Prime Minister with alarming data on the effect of the judicial reform legislation on the willingness of IDF reserve officers and soldiers to volunteer and report for duty. Yediot Aharonot reported ...
Baltimore, MD - Mar. 23, 2023 - An Orthodox Jewish man was robbed in broad daylight yesterday outside Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion. The attacker stole the man's yarmulka and Gemara. Baltimore Shomrim were quickly alerted and tracked the thief, directing police to his location. Although the suspect resisted arrest, officers eventually detained him. The victim was not seriously injured, and the assailant now faces multiple charges.
Israel’s parliament on Thursday passed the first of several laws that make up its contentious judicial overhaul as protesters opposing the changes staged another day of demonstrations aimed at raising alarm over what they see as the country’s descent toward autocracy. Thousands of people protested throughout the country, blocking traffic on main highways and scuffling with police in unrest that shows no sign of abating, especially as the overhaul moves ahead. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition approved legislation that would protect the Israeli leader from being deemed unfit to rule because of his corruption trial and claims of a conflict of interest surrounding his involvement in the legal changes. Critics say the law is tailor-made for Netanyahu, encourages...
