As reported by Chaim V’Chessed, earlier this week the US Embassy in Israel rolled out troubling new rules regarding issuance of emergency passports for babies born to US citizens. These rules greatly affect the ability of American families residing in Israel to travel to the USA for Pesach. Appointments for Consular Reports of Birth Abroad and first-time passports for newborns in Israel are scarce and hard to come by. The average wait time for appointments is now a disturbing four to five months. Until this week, families with documented immediate travel plans were offered the possibility of obtaining temporary, emergency passports for newborns. However, this option was abruptly canceled on March 13, leaving no avenue for these families to return to the USA for Pesach. Ch...

Baltimore, MD - Mar. 15, 2023 :If you: —Would rather stick a hot needle in your eye than join another WhatsApp group; and —Do not appreciate people pressuring you to join chesed projects that they are passionate about but are not for you; and —Hope that someone else with more time will take care of it; and —Have already stopped reading this; then….  Then this next part is going to be a very hard sell. Here it is anyway: When you need to go somewhere, you get in your car and go. If you had no car and still had to get the same amount of stuff done every day, it would be impossible.   If you have a mom, you might call her for help, but if she is dead then that is not an option. If you had a spouse who drives, you might reach out to that spouse, bu...

Baltimore, MD - Mar. 14, 2023: Dear Baltimore Community,This session in Annapolis, Delegate Dana Stein and I introduced a new concept to the Maryland General Assembly – state funded school bus transportation for children in private schools.  This hot-button issue and much-needed policy for our community received significant opposition from members of the General Assembly and others in Annapolis. As a parent and community member, I know firsthand the struggles we experience with carpools.  School busing is a necessity – for our safety, along with environmental and practical reasons.  Delegate Stein and I therefore spent many hours, days and weeks working with leadership on ways to make this a reality in the future. I am extremely proud to announce that leadershi...
The Maryland Transportation Authority will be closing two major bridges to traffic in both directions as three large cranes will be moved out through the Chesapeake Bay. The Francis Scott Key Bridge and Chesapeake Bay Bridge will be temporarily closed at different times on Thursday to accommodate the safe passage of the cranes past both bridges. On Thursday, March 16, the Key Bridge will be closed at approximately 9:30 a.m. to traffic for about 15-30 minutes. Around 1:30 p.m., the Bay Bridge will close to traffic in both directions for 15-30 minutes as well. These closures to traffic are for safety purposes to ensure that drivers are not distracted while crossing these bridges during the crane's transportation underneath them.

With less than a month left in the 2023 General Assembly session, legislation aiming to increase maximum penalties for first-time misdemeanor gun offenses may end up changing forms. The legislation, backed by Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates, seeks to raise the maximum penalty for illegal gun possession for first-time offenders who are 21 and older from three years to five; current law sets the five-year maximum penalty for offenders between 18 years old and 20. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Luke Clippinger held a hearing on the legislation in February, but the bill was not voted on at that time and another hearing hasn’t been scheduled. The legislation is sponsored by Del. Frank Conaway, D-Baltimore City, in the House and Baltimore City Democratic Sen. C...

As Baltimore's population shrinks, there are renewed questions whether the size of Baltimore's city council should shrink too. Baltimore's 15-member council is larger than any other city council in Maryland and in many other major cities. The city of Los Angeles also has 15 members on it's council, however, the city is six times the size of the city of Baltimore. In Charlotte, NC, eleven people sit on the city council and govern a population much larger than Baltimore. The Charlotte city council also operates on a budget of just less than a million dollars. Baltimore's city council operates on a $9 million dollar budget. "The more people you have the more chaos you're going to have," said David Williams, President of Taxpayers Protection Alliance. On Mo...
Beginning April 1, 2023, yard materials will be collected separately for recycling from Baltimore County residents with “Y” days on their schedule. These separate yard material collections will occur from April 1 through as late as December 14. If a resident’s schedule has no “Y” days, their yard materials will continue to be collected with trash year-round. County regulations require that yard materials set out for separate “Y” day collection must be placed in heavy-duty paper lawn and leaf bags or bundled with non-plastic string. For these set-outs, plastic bags will not be accepted. Yard materials acceptable for recycling collection include grass, leaves, vines, twigs, shrubbery trimmings, branches and limbs. Branches and limbs will be collec...
Major changes are in the making for Maryland's "concealed carry" law. The Maryland State Senate made the Gun Safety Act less restrictive before sending the measure to the House for its consideration. According to the bill's sponsor, the changes make it more constitutional. Second amendment advocates agree but will likely be pushing for the house to make even more changes. Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee Vice-Chair Jeff Waldstreicher, D-District 18, said the revisions were necessary. "The bill, as introduced, may have been written too broadly, and it was a challenge to defend constitutionally. So, we came back, we redrafted the bill in a way, I think, is simultaneously both narrower and stronger," he said. Proposed changes include dropping the prohibition on carrying a ...
Baltimore City residents are fed-up with their recycling piling up. After more than a year of rolled back services, some are ready to take their concerns to court. Baltimore City residents who agree weekly recycling should be restored can sign the petition by clicking here. "For us, it was the only avenue left. You know, once it became clear that there was no intention of restarting weekly recycling," said Baltimore City resident Desmond Stinnie. Stinnie says he has twice the recycling post-pandemic. "Everything is an amazon package," he said. But with half the pick-ups, there's constantly an overflow of cardboard boxes in his backyard. The city now has 30 days to respond to the lawsuit. FOX45 reached out to the city's law department and the Department of Public Works ...
Some of the Laws of Seudah Shelishis Question #1: Min haTorah or not? Is eating three meals on Shabbos a Torah requirement? Question #2: Shaloshudis? Why do most people slur the word and pronounce it as shaloshudis? Should it not be called seudah shelishis? Question #3: Three and over What is required to be eaten for the third meal on Shabbos? Answer: The mitzvah of celebrating Shabbos is mentioned by the prophet Yeshayahu (58:13), in his famous words, vekarasa laShabbos oneg, “And you shall call Shabbos a delight.” Although this observance is not mentioned in the written Torah, many authorities rule that it has a halachic status of being min haTorah. It may be included in the Torah’s words mikra’ei kodesh (Vayikra 23:2, see Ramban, as explained by Shaar H...
