At least seven people were killed and another 10 injured in a terror attack at a synagogue in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood of Jerusalem on Friday evening. The terrorist, who opened fire at people leaving the synagogue after Friday night prayers, was killed by security forces after attempting to escape in a car. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was reported to be receiving updates from the scene and is set to hold a situational assessment later this evening. Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai arrived at the scene of the incident shortly after the shooting occurred. MDA paramedics are providing treatment at the scene of the attack. "We saw a woman and 4 men lying on the road. They suffered gunshot wounds and had no signs of life and we had to confirm their deaths immediately," said MDA pa...
Ronna McDaniel won a fourth term to head the Republican National Committee (RNC) during a secret ballot vote by members on Friday, capping off a contentious election spurred by calls within the party for new leadership. McDaniel fended off two challengers — California attorney Harmeet Dhillon and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, a staunch denier of the 2020 presidential election results. She received 111 votes while Dhillon received 51 votes and Lindell received four votes. Former Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.), who did not ultimately make a run for RNC chair, also received one vote.  The last three elections have proven disappointing for Republicans: The party lost the House in 2018, lost the Senate and presidency in 2020 and only gained a thin majority in the House ...
Updated at 3:40PM - At least seven people were killed and several others were injured, including one critically, in a shooting attack on the Ateret Avraham Synagogue in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood of Jerusalem on Friday evening. Magen David Adom paramedics evacuated five injured people to hospitals, including three who were evacuated to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus, and two who were evacuated to Shaare Zedek Hospital. These include a man about 30 years old in critical condition and a woman about 60 years of age in moderate condition. Initial reports indicate that a terrorist got out of a vehicle and opened fire at people who were gathered outside the synagogue, opened fire at them, and then continued to pursue frightened worshipers who were fleeing the scene. The terrorist eventua...
This week's parsha begins with the plague of locusts which entailed a swarm of insects so great that it caused a darkness to fall over the land. Additionally, whatever was not previously destroyed by the hail was consumed by the locusts. However, there are a number of aspects of Paroah's frantic reaction that are somewhat anomalous. First, the pasuk recounts (10:16) that Paroah hurried to call Moshe and Aharon which we don't find with the other plagues.  Second, Paroah pleads for Moshe to remove "this death" from him. This particular plague did not seem to be of a life-threatening nature, certainly when compared to some of the others. Why is it referred to as a death? Additionally, the pasuk already recounted the locusts' activities a...

A judge authorized Marilyn Mosby's entire defense team to withdraw from her upcoming perjury trial. The Federal Public Defender's Office has now been ordered to take over as Mosby's new council. Attorneys with the Reed Smith law firm had argued a conflict of interest, citing potential criminal contempt charges against their colleague and original lead attorney in the case, A. Scott Bolden. They raised concern over the possibility of being called as witnesses in future proceedings against Bolden, putting the firm in an untenable position to fairly represent Mosby. Prosecutors expressed support for Bolden's withdraw, but opposed allowing co-councils Rizwan A. Qureshi, Anthony Todd, and Kelly Miller to do so. The government explained the move would likely de...
A New York federal court on Friday unveiled an indictment charging three men on murder-for-hire and money laundering charges for plotting the assassination of a U.S. citizen targeted by the Iranian government. All three men, associated with an Eastern European criminal organization, are in custody and will stand trial in the U.S., Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed.  The Department of Defense has not named the victim, though Fox News confirmed the individual is Masih Alinejad, who was the target of a 2021 kidnapping plot that was foiled by the FBI.

Jan. 27 marks the remembrance of the Holocaust, with world leaders reiterating their commitment to the words, "never again" even as scholars and survivors raise concerns about the growing prominence of antisemitism.  "First robbed of their names, then of their lives: No cemeteries, no headstones, no traces remain," U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at a ceremony commemorating a new Holocaust memorial Thursday. "The 6 million Jewish children, men and women are lost forever, but their memory and their names shall never be forgotten. In Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland, survivors' families and leaders held a ceremony to mark the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German death camp in the final months of World War II. The United Nations marked the e...

Baltimore, MD - Jan. 27, 2023 - It has come to STAR-K's attention that there is a potential halachic issue with some Wolf cooktops that have the auto-ignite feature. When a burner is on, opening or closing a drawer or cabinet door near the cooktop might extinguish the burner flame, which will automatically reignite. The manufacturer has informed us that this poses no safety concern, as the flame comes back right away. However, this does present a halachic concern for Shabbos and Yom Tov. STAR-K advises consumers to conduct the following test on a weekday: Observe the cooktop under normal cooking conditions while opening and closing drawers and cabinet doors in the vicinity of the cooktop. Verify that the burner remains on without interruption. If testing indicat...
Baltimore, MD - Jan. 27, 2023 - As winter approaches, it's important for drivers to be prepared for the potential for snow and icy conditions on the road. While not much snow is currently expected in our area, AAA Mid-Atlantic and Chaverim of Baltimore want drivers to be ready just in case. Last winter, AAA reported receiving over 100,000 emergency calls from drivers in Maryland, highlighting the fact that many people are not familiar with the dos and don'ts of winter driving. One of the most crucial things to check is tire tread. As temperatures drop, tire pressure can decrease, leaving drivers stranded if they don't have good tires. Another important tip is to check car batteries. Cold temperatures can put a significant amount of stress on batteries, which can cause dama...
Baltimore County police say keep an eye out because card skimming is on the rise again. Most of us have heard it before, when using your card at an ATM or gas station to be aware if something looks off. But do you have a plan in place to protect your information? These card scams come in many different forms. Swiping your card or typing in your pin can cost you more than you dare to bargain for. "There's a lot of skimming going on right now in Baltimore," said Baltimore resident Caleb Wilson. Card skimming happens when devices are put on ATM's, gas pumps and even software placed on internet sites. These devices capture your data and before you know it, your cash is emptied out of your account. This happened to Terry Gaddy who was a victim of skimming. He says "They were tak...
Auschwitz-Birkenau survivors and other mourners commemorated the 78th anniversary Friday of the Nazi German death camp’s liberation, some expressing horror that war has again shattered peace in Europe and the lesson of Never Again is being forgotten. The former concentration and extermination camp is located in the town of Oświęcim in southern Poland, which was under the occupation of German forces during World War II and became a place of systematic murder of Jews, Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, Roma and others targeted for elimination by Adolf Hitler and his henchmen. In all, some 1.1 million people were killed at the vast complex before it was liberated by Soviet troops on Jan. 27, 1945. Today the site, with its barracks and barbed wire and the ruins of gas chambers, stands ...

Baltimore, MD - Jan. 26, 2023 -  In response to the increasing issue of violent crime committed by juveniles, Delegate Dalya Attar has taken action by filing a bill in the Annapolis legislature. The bill, House Bill 358, aims to increase transparency in the juvenile justice system by creating a database that tracks juvenile felony offenses in the state of Maryland. The bill ensures that the identities of the juveniles involved in these offenses remain anonymous in order to protect their privacy and future prospects. This database would provide valuable information for policymakers, law enforcement, and community leaders to better understand and address the problem of juvenile crime in the state. It also aims to increase accountability for youth offenders and provide a more effective m...
