It's an emotional day for the Baltimore City Fire Department as the deadly South Stricker Street fire claimed the lives of three Baltimore city firefighters in the line of duty one year ago today. January 24, 2022 is a day people in Baltimore will not soon forget. Firefighters gathered in solidarity at the site of the tragic fire for an informal service Tuesday morning, while staff at firehouses across the city will remember the solemn day. Firefighters spent hours on scene of the fire at a vacant home at the corner of South Stricker and Pratt Streets. The home collapsed, taking the lives of Lieutenants Kelsey Sadler, Paul Butrim, and firefighter Kenny Lacayo along with it. Several events will memorialize the three fallen firefighters. Baltimore city firehouses will take a moment ...
The following thought on this week's Torah portion comes from Rabbi Aharon Darmon of Jerusalem:"The first verse of this week's Torah portion contains a powerful approach to facing formidable challenges in our lives: 'The Lord said to Moses: Come to Pharaoh.'Many of us may feel that there is something that blocks our way in life, some kind of 'Pharaoh' that enslaves and stymies us. But instead of confronting this Pharaoh, we escape and occupy ourselves with other things and thus postpone our personal Exodus from Egypt. The parasha is clearly telling us this: come to Pharaoh. Go directly to your adversary, do not avoid your problem. Don't run away, don't look for distractions, cope directly with whatever distresses you. This is relevant both to single a...

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sharply criticizes murdered Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in his new book, questioning his journalism credentials and lambasting what he calls the media’s sympathetic coverage of his brutal killing in Saudi Arabia. “He didn’t deserve to die, but we need to be clear about who he was -- and too many in the media were not,” Pompeo wrote in “Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love.” NBC News obtained a copy of the book in advance of its Jan. 24 release.   Pompeo, a potential 2024 presidential candidate, mocked the media’s portrayal of Khashoggi as “a Saudi Arabian Bob Woodward who was martyred for bravely criticizing the Saudi royal family through his opinion articles in th...
Seven people were killed in two related shootings at a mushroom farm and a trucking firm in a coastal community south of San Francisco on Monday, officials said. San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Dave Pine says four people were killed at the farm and three at the trucking business on the outskirts of Half Moon Bay, a city about 30 miles south of San Francisco. It was not immediately clear how the locations were connected. The San Mateo County Sheriff said on Twitter: "The Sheriff's Office is responding to a shooting incident with multiple victims in the area of (Highway) 92 and the (Half Moon Bay) City limits. "Suspect is in custody. There is no ongoing threat to the community at this time," it added a short time later. The shootings incidents come less than 48 hour...
With the General Assembly in full swing, the pressure is mounting to get bills drafted and introduced, but it’s unclear if a top priority for Baltimore’s new top prosecutor will get introduced. On day one in office, Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates said his legislative push included evening the sentencing maximums for misdemeanor gun offenses. Bates said if a defendant is between 18 and 20 years of age, the maximum sentence was five years, but for offenders over the age of 21, he said the max penalty was three years. “The one thing I’ll go down to Annapolis and talk about is let’s raise that from three years to five years,” Bates said during an exclusive interview with FOX45 News hours after being sworn in as state’s attorney. A ...
Former US President Donald Trump is preparing to return to Twitter for his upcoming presidential campaign and ditch his own social media platform Truth Social, Rolling Stone reports. When Trump first founded Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), he agreed to a “social media exclusivity term” that required him to “first channel any and all social media communications” to his Truth Social account for six hours before posting the content to other platforms, the report said, citing to SEC filings. But two sources familiar with the matter told Rolling Stone that since late last year, Trump has informed several people close to him that he doesn’t want to re-up the exclusivity agreement with Truth Social.  Tax season is heading into full swing as tax professionals urge those filing to get it done early this year, to avoid the knock on the door nobody wants. "The agent knocked on the door. She wasn't there and left that paper there and she ran home to go and get it. Sure enough, it was for 2021 taxes not even like she was behind on her taxes," Jason Upshaw recalled, regarding one of his clients at Belvedere Tax Group. He says the lesson behind that knock is simple: don't get behind filing this year. Whether you're an early filer starting now or a late filer waiting until March or April, prepare to receive less in 2022's tax refund. "The IRS has already warned that refunds will be smaller this year compared to last year," Upshaw said. But, there are some tax brea...

A majority of voters fault Dr. Anthony Fauci, former chief medical adviser to the president, for mismanaging the government's COVID-19 response — and said Congress should investigate, polling by a conservative grassroots group shows. In the survey conducted for Convention of States Action by The Trafalgar Group, released Monday, found that 52.2% of voters say the congressional investigation should look into Fauci for "inconsistent testimony about his research leading up to the pandemic" — and his actions managing the outbreak, while 44.5% disagreed. "Had the COVID-19 pandemic been well-managed, it would have been prudent for Congress to hold hearings to talk about what we learned and what could be done better in the future," Mark Meckler, president of Conv...
New documents filed in federal court reveal why two of the members of Marilyn Mosby's defense team are asking the court to withdraw from the case. Both attorneys say representing Mosby would create a financial hardship and conflict with their schedules. In one filing, attorney Lucius Outlaw says the schedule for Mosby's trial will conflict with his teaching duties at the Howard University School of Law. In the other filing, attorney Gary Proctor noted that he booked a non-refundable trip to the United Kingdom and that no one consulted him about his availability. Both attorneys are representing Mosby pro bono. Proctor also notes that he is one attorney in a two-person law firm that represents clients facing the death penalty, which potentially creates an ethics violat...
The head of House Democrats has submitted Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) to sit on the powerful Intelligence Committee, setting up a battle with Republican leaders who are vowing to keep them off the panel. Separately, Democrats this week are also expected to seat Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, according to a source familiar with the Democrats’ plans, which will likely prompt GOP leaders to hold a floor vote to remove her.  In a letter sent Saturday to Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Schiff, the top Democrat on the Intelligence panel, and Swalwell are both “eminently qualified” to continue their service on...

He is charged alongside Sergey Shestakov, a former Soviet and Russian diplomat who later became a U.S. citizen and a Russian interpreter for courts and government offices, through a five-count indictment unsealed in Manhattan federal court Monday.  McGonigal and Shestakov both were arrested Saturday. The indictment is a rare ...

“Incidents of improper conduct by charedi soldiers in the Netzah Yehuda Battalion are not unusual compared to other battalions. The fact that Netzah Yehuda is being repeatedly condemned – while emphasizing that they are charedi soldiers – indicates that there is an agenda behind this”, said Maj. Gen. (res.) Nadav Padan in a closed meeting on haredi recruitment to the IDF held last Saturday at the Fremont Hotel in Austin, Texas. Major General Padan, who until two and a half years ago served as General of Central Command and currently serves as the National Director of the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) in the USA, spoke at the annual conference of the Israeli-American Council (IAC). He was responding to a question from panel moderator, journalist Miri M...
