Baltimore, MD – Nov. 25, 2022 - A beautiful Yarchei Kallah learning program took place yesterday at Khal Kedushas Yisroel - Kollel Khal Chasidim on Park Heights Avenue. A sizeable crowd of Baalei Batim took the opportunity to use the day off and indulge in Torah learning. The event began at 10 AM when the oilem began by learning the sugya of reciting Hallel on Rosh Chodesh (yesterday was the 1st day Rosh Chodesh Kislev) in the pre-printed kuntreisim with copies of the Gemoros and seforim needed on this topic. What a beautiful sight to see the chasiddishe kollel yingerleit learning together b'chavrusa with the local Baalei Batim, which brought out Baltimore’s tremendous achdus and ahavas hatorah. At 11:45, Hagaon Rav Yosef Berger, Shlita, Rav of Kehillas Kol Torah gave a...
Yaakov encounters Esav in a moment of vulnerability. Esav returns home from a ‘day at the races’ exhausted. He begs his brother Yaakov to partake from the red porridge he is in the midst of preparing, as he is famished. Yaakov seeing an propitious opportunity accedes to Esav’s request in a ‘fair’ exchange for Esav’s birthright. Why does the Torah emphasize the exhaustion that fueled Esav’s hunger? What difference did it make why he was starving, the main issue at hand was the circumstance of his ravenous urge for food that enabled Yaakov to cleverly manipulate the birthright away from Esav? The Torah carefully avoided using the normative term for hunger — רעב, choosing instead to utilize the word עיף — tired, even though in trut...
A young mother told me that she began to study the weekly Torah portion and asked what there is in this week's Torah portion that she could discuss with her children and guests at her Shabbat table. Here are some thoughts of our commentators through the ages regarding two central subjects of this week's parasha.Parashat Toldot hints at the anguish of Yitzchak and Rivkah due to their longing for children, a recurring theme throughout the book of Genesis. The fathers and mothers of our nation provide a lesson in how to cope with childlessness and, in general, with whatever causes us pain or is lacking in our lives. Yitzchak and Rivkah wait twenty years for Rivkah to become pregnant. Twenty years of prayers and supplications must pass before Ya'akov and Esav are born. What did ...
More than a month after U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown demanded answers from the head of the U.S. Postal Service on ongoing mail thefts and delays, he said he received nothing but silence. Now, he's sending out a second letter to the United States Postal Service Board of Governors to say action must be taken. "This head of the postal service who came from three to four years ago has done major damage to the postal service," Brown, D-Ohio, said. "(Postmaster General Louis) DeJoy has an arrogance that is second to none." Brown said he sent the original letter after receiving constant complaints from his 12 million constituents in Ohio. Columbus mom Angel Rodriguez has called Sen. Brown's office multiple times. "They're all with their hands in the air saying, 'I don'...
“And Isaac loved Esav because [his] game was in his mouth, but Rebecca loved Jacob (Bereishis 25:28).” The commentaries struggle to understand the meaning of this verse. It appears as if the Torah is telling us that Yitzchak and Rivka played favorites. But could this really be? As parents, we learn to appreciate the differences within our children. We celebrate their strengths, help them to address their weaknesses, and create a special and unique bond with each individual child. No two children are alike; each child is a world unto him/herself, and it is the sacred task of parents to understand, love and connect with each child. Each child is different but should never be made to feel more or less loved than the other. If these lessons are understood and obvious to us (not th...

The official state airplane, "Kanaf Tzion" (lit. Wing of Zion) took off from Nevatim airbase in the Negev for a refresher flight on Thursday morning, after a year of being stored in a hangar on the base. The aircraft, which will serve Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu as well as President Isaac Herzog, took a fifteen-minute flight to swoop around the Negev skies. Netanyahu intends to use the plane, despite outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid's plan to sell it as a civilian aircraft. After becoming prime minister, Lapid ordered the aircraft to be grounded and for its special systems to be disabled and removed, but now it appears that the plane will return to the skies with its systems intact, within the next few weeks. According to journalist Yaron Avraham, only one system ...
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott released a statement after Baltimore reached 300 homicides in 2022. Baltimore reached its 300th homicide of the year on Tuesday after police upgraded the classification of an April shooting. Officials said a 24-year-old man who was shot on April 12 in northeast Baltimore died Monday. No arrests have been made. Scott issued the following statement:  "I have long said that my main priority as Mayor is to strengthen public safety and create a Baltimore where people can walk to or from school or sit with family or friends on their front porch or in a parked car without fear of being caught in the crossfire of a hail of bullets. The flow of illegal guns into our city from beyond our borders continues to serve as a catalyst for violence in our streets. I r...
The holidays are upon us which means it's a time to keep an eye out for those scams. A simple swipe of a credit card could cost you more than what you're bargaining for. With Black Friday shopping around the corner, many will be out and about snagging the best deals, but buyers must beware. "Obviously the scammers are going to understand that there is going to be a lot more people out shopping when it comes to Black Friday shopping," one person said. Chief Deputy William Davis says devices called skimmers can be placed on ATM's, at checkout scanners and gas stations. Just recently, they were found at three locations in Harford County. "At the point of sale, where the actual scanner is, they put imitation scanners on top of the store scanners or the bank scanner, which a...
On Wednesday, Kan News reported that a group of Iranian hackers known as "Mateh Moshe" published new footage from one of the bombing attacks in Jerusalem that morning, supposedly from the city's own security cameras. It has now become clear that the internal systems of a major Israeli security firm were breached in the attack. Furthermore, although the Iranian hackers succeeded in obtaining the sensitive footage, Israeli investigators remained unable to access it as the cameras at the city's entrance, where the attack took place, were not operational at the time of the attack. Kan quoted the Jerusalem municipality: "The video clip which was published was not filmed using our cameras." Meanwhile, the hackers themselves publicized a message on ...
Baltimore, Md - Nov. 23,  Although this time of year corresponds with the frigid winter, it is not a period of morbidity and despair, rather of hope and positivity. This is borne out by a deeper study of the mazal (zodiac sign) of Kislev: keshes (a rainbow). The hues of the rainbow’s light, coupled with the neiros Chanukah, iconize the radiant spiritual opportunity of this period of the year. Click here to listen
Former president Donald Trump lashed out at his former ally Bill Barr, calling him “sloppy” and “weak,” for saying that it was increasingly likely he would face criminal charges. Mr Trump posted on his Truth Social account: “Sloppy Bill Barr was a weak and ineffective Attorney General who was fired (he didn’t quit!), and now he’s nothing more than a disgruntled former ‘employee’.” He raged on: “Barr was a ‘Bushie’ who was petrified of being impeached, which the Dems were going to do until he changed course on the rigged election.” Mr Trump also claimed that the Mar-a-Lago documents case was a hoax. “He knows nothing about the document hoax, and as a lawyer and former AG, shouldn&rsqu...
Given the opportunity, plenty of people would probably opt to eliminate stress entirely from their lives. Fascinating new findings from the University of Georgia, however, indicate that a little bit of stress can actually be very beneficial to both body and brain. When we’re stressed, we’re usually forced to deal with unpredictable or tense situations that can rankle our bodies physically. While these scenarios are almost never fun in the moment, they serve to push us out of our comfort zones — and that can be a good thing for the mind. Researchers say that low to moderate levels of stress appear to promote improved working memory. Working memory refers to short-term information people use to complete everyday tasks. Examples include recalling someone’s phone...

Three Democratic senators urged the Department of Transportation on Wednesday to increase airline passengers’ compensation for canceled and delayed flights when the airline is at fault. The pressure campaign comes on the eve of Thanksgiving, as airlines prepare for near pre-pandemic levels of travel. In a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Democratic Sens. Maria Cantwell of Washington, Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut wrote the airlines should be responsible for passengers’ “secondary costs” when they cancel or “significantly” delay a flight. “The refunds rule should require airlines to cover secondary costs – such as hotel rooms, food and drink, and transportation to-and-from t...
The move comes amid intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure The European parliament on Wednesday adopted a resolution declaring Russia a state sponsor of terrorism amid Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and urged the 27-nation European Union to look to follow suit.  "The deliberate attacks and atrocities carried out by the Russian Federation against the civilian population of Ukraine, the destruction of civilian infrastructure and other serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law amount to acts of terror," a resolution approved by EU lawmakers said. A total of 494 lawmakers voted in favor of the notion, while 44 abstained. The document lists accusations against Russia that are not limited to the violations recorded dur...
An accountant for former President Trump has testified that the former president reported major losses on his tax returns every year for a decade, including a $700 million loss in 2009.  The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that Donald Bender, who has served as Trump’s accountant and prepared Trump’s personal tax returns for years, testified in the criminal tax fraud trial against the Trump Organization that Trump lost money in every year from 2009 to 2018.  The losses include net operating losses from some of the businesses he owns through the Trump Organization.  “There are losses for all these years,” Bender said.  Bender was granted immunity to testify at the trial.
