Last week, about 1,500 students from 12 middle schools, including from the Five Towns and Teaneck, embarked on a Torah learning journey as part of the Orthodox Union’s Torah Initiative’s All Mishnah Junior (AMJ) program.           Participating students commit to learning two mishnayot (written collection of Jewish oral traditions) a day to complete all 24 chapters of Masechta Shabbat and Megillah in only a few months. The goal of this program is to involve young students in Torah learning with a fun factor: swag (branded hoodies) and raffle prizes ranging from gift cards to AirPods and Oculuses. AMJ is a student-led program. Some of the 6th-8th graders are ambassadors, responsible for encouraging their friends and classmates to jo...
After a fourth U.S. railroad union rejected an agreement with their employers brokered by the Biden administration - and reignited fears of a nationwide rail worker strike - one spokesman for the rail companies claimed they’re "ready, willing and able" to reach new negotiations. "We need to keep the network moving. We need to keep the economy moving," Association of American Railroads (AAR) President and CEO Ian Jeffries said on "Varney & Co." Tuesday. "And so that's why we stand ready, willing and able to reach new voluntary agreements. And absent that, we believe Congress might need to be ready to step in as it historically has." Jeffries’ comments come just after a fourth rail union rejected a tentative agreement with the nation's major freight ra...
On this day in history, Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy — the 35th president of the United States — was assassinated while riding in an open-car motorcade in downtown Dallas, Texas. The shocking event of 59 years ago happened near the end of JFK's third year as president. Riding in the same car as Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy was Texas Gov. John B. Connally, as well as Connally's wife, Nellie Connally. That same day, the suspect in the shooting, Lee Harvey Oswald, was arrested. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as president that day as well as the stunned nation absorbed the blow of so suddenly and violently losing its elected president. ‘Gunfire suddenly reverberated’  Crowds of excited peo...

One of the two men accused of planning to attack an unspecified synagogue in New York City is Jewish and the grandson of a Holocaust survivor, his counsel said in court on Saturday. Matthew Mahrer, 22, in Manhattan Criminal Court on accusations of criminal possession of a weapon, was ordered held on $150,000 bail or a $300,000 bond despite his lawyer’s request that he be freed on his own recognizance and the prosecutors’ recommendation that he be held without bail. “There are a lot of questions here,” defense attorney Brandon Freycint said of Mahrer, who has allegedly been diagnosed with autism, bipolar disorder, anxiety and ADHD, the New York Post reported. “My client is of Jewish heritage. He resides with his parents and his grandfather is actua...
It was Israel that tipped off the United Kingdom’s MI5 domestic intelligence agency regarding Iranian terrorist threats to British citizens and residents, Kan 11  reported on Monday. Journalists were among the prime intended targets of Iranian attack plots, according to the report. On Nov. 16, MI5 Director Gen. Ken McCallum stated during an annual threat update at his agency’s London headquarters that “Iran projects threat to the UK directly, through its aggressive intelligence services.” This threat “includes ambitions to kidnap or even kill British or U.K.-based individuals perceived as enemies of the regime,” he said, adding, “We have seen at least 10 such potential threats since January alone. We work at pace with domestic and...
The Supreme Court on Tuesday cleared the way for the imminent handover of former President Donald Trump’s tax returns to a congressional committee after a three-year legal fight. The court, without comment, rejected Trump’s plea for an order that would have prevented the Treasury Department from giving six years of tax returns for Trump and some of his businesses to the Democratic-controlled House Ways and Means Committee. It was Trump’s second loss at the Supreme Court in as many months. In October, the court refused to step into the legal fight surrounding the FBI search of Trump’s Florida estate that turned up classified documents. In the dispute over his tax returns, the Treasury Department had refused to provide the records during Trump&r...

Despite huge investment in public transport projects, commuters will prefer their cars because plans prioritize cars and ignore pedestrians' needs. Billions of shekels have been spent on public transport projects but the investment won’t provide passengers with the service they need. Israel’s urban planners have preferred to continue prioritizing cars and transport experts insist this will make things tough for commuters; those who can, will continue to opt for their own cars. At a conference last month, organized by Transport Today & Tomorrow - The Israeli Organization for Sustainable Transportation, Prof. Karel Martens of the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, presented an overview of some of these transport...
