The former Hurricane Ian could bring downpours to Maryland this weekend. The Old Line State, however, will probably avoid severe damage. Still, Ocean City on Thursday canceled a music festival scheduled for this weekend out of an abundance of caution. Ian hit Florida's Gulf Coast on Wednesday as a category 4 hurricane. The storm trekked east across the state, losing wind speed as it traveled inland. That weakening force downgraded Ian to a tropical storm as it reentered the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday. Ian could regain energy as it spins off Florida's Atlantic Coast. That ocean water may rejuvenate the storm and return it to a category 1 hurricane, AccuWeather reported.
The United States Senate passed a short-term government funding bill on Thursday after over two dozen Republicans crossed party lines to avert a shutdown.  In an 72-25 vote, the Senate passed a funding measure meant to keep the government afloat until December 16. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the more than two-month extension would allow lawmakers from both sides of the aisle one last chance at negotiating a year-long budget deal before the new Congress takes office in January.  "Let's hope this is the last [stop gap], they do so we get an omnibus [budget] done in December," said Schumer, D-N.Y. The funding bill now heads to the House where Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is expected to pass it before the September 30 deadline at which fundin...

Speaking from FEMA Headquarters in Washington on Thursday afternoon, President Biden said Hurricane Ian could be "the deadliest hurricane in Florida's history." "The numbers are still unclear, but we're hearing early reports of what may be substantial loss of life," he explained. The president said the U.S. Coast Guard had deployed 16 rescue helicopters, six fixed-wing aircraft and 18 rescue boats to respond to hard-hit areas. "And, in the face of serious danger, search and rescue operations got underway before dawn this morning for people stranded and who are in desperate shape," he told reporters. Biden said more would be learned in coming hours but that the administration knows "many families are hurting." "We're going to pull together as one team, as one A...
A day after Hurricane Ian made landfall in southwest Florida as a Category 4 storm, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday that the storm surge that came with it was “basically a 500-year flood event.” “We’ve never seen a flood event like this,” he said during a news briefing in Tallahassee. “We’ve never seen a storm surge of this magnitude.” More than 2.5 million people across the state were without power as search and rescue teams and first responders assessed the historic damage. Large sections of the Sanibel Causeway, which connects the Sanibel Islands to the mainland, collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico. DeSantis said the causeway and Matlacha Pass Bridge are “impassable” and are going to require “stru...

During these ‘Ten Days of Teshuva’ we are tasked with taking advantage of G-d’s proximity by cleaning up our act and getting closer to Him. Although this has broader implications in that it encompasses all our misdeeds, nevertheless in practical terms there seems to be three areas of improvement specifically mentioned. The Rambam initiates his directive with the call to ‘increasing charity’, then going on to encourage doing more good deeds and engaging in mitzvos in general. The Shulchan Aruch devotes an independent section to the need prior to Yom Kippur to rectify the wrongs we have committed towards one another, appeasing, and asking forgiveness. There is another separate section summoning us to refrain from eating bread products that were baked by a no...

Vice President Kamala Harris made an unfortunate gaffe during her speech at the Korean Peninsula's Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Thursday, saying that the United States has a "strong alliance" with "the Republic of North Korea." "It is an alliance that is strong and enduring," she added, intending to refer to the Republic of Korea, which is South Korea's official name. The vice president then continued her remarks by professing the U.S.'s support for South Korea's defense against the increasingly aggressive North Korean government. I cannot state enough that the commitment of the United States to the defense of the Republic of Korea is iron-clad, and that we will do everything in our power to ensure that it has meaning in every way that the words suggest," Ha...
Public trust of the U.S. Supreme Court is at a record low, according to a Gallup poll published on Thursday. Forty-seven percent of adults surveyed earlier this month said that they trust the court, 6 percentage points lower than the previous record low of 53 percent reported in 2015. Last year, 54 percent of respondents said they had “a great deal” or “a fair amount” of trust in the court. Job approval for the Supreme Court also dropped in the new poll, tying the previous record low of 40 percent. After the controversial Dobbs v. Jackson decision overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked, the court’s job approval stood at 43 percent in July. The 58 percent who told Gallup they disapprove of the Supreme Court’s job performance in the new survey i...
Millions of people in Florida have lost power and some are trapped in flooded buildings due to now-Tropical Storm Ian, which hit the state on Wednesday as a Category 4 hurricane and is making its way north to Georgia and South Carolina. The massive storm has knocked out power for 2.5 million Floridians as of Thursday morning while others remain stuck in flooded homes. Ian’s tropical-storm force winds began surging northeast on Thursday morning and are predicted to spread northward on the east coast, according to the National Hurricane Center. &ldqu...
