Both parshiyos Balak (read this week in Eretz Yisrael) and Chukas (read in chutz la’aretz) discuss relationships with non-Jews, and therefore are appropriate parshiyos to discuss the mitzvah of tevilas keilim. Question: A Sweet Saga Avraham Sweet, the proprietor of Candy Andy, wants to know. "I have a gift business in which I sell glass candy bowls filled with candies, fruits, and nuts. Must I toivel these dishes before I fill them?" Introduction: In Parshas Matos, the Torah teaches: Regarding the gold and the silver; the copper, the iron, the tin and the lead: any item that was used in fire needs to be placed in fire to become kosher, yet it must also be purified in mikveh water. In addition, that which was not used in fire must pass through water" (Bamidbar 31:22-23). Fr...
'We are now seeing a recurring rise in infection and serious cases… I call on the public to act responsibly' Israel's Prime Minister Yair Lapid held a Sunday meeting in his office in Jerusalem to discuss dealing with the newest Covid wave.  “Maintaining the level of readiness is critical – we are staying on top of it,” Lapid said, according to The Jerusalem Post.  “We are approaching the peak of the global tourist season at all airports, including in Israel. This will have an impact on the speed of infection,” he continued. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the health minister for making [the surveillance of the disease] a sophisticated system.” Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz...
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said in an interview broadcast on Sunday that it’s possible the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack at the U.S. Capitol will make a criminal referral against former President Trump. During the interview on ABC’s “This Week,” the network’s chief Washington correspondent, Jonathan Karl, asked Cheney — who serves as the vice chairwoman of the committee — whether the panel’s hearings have demonstrated that Trump should be prosecuted. “Ultimately, the Justice Department will decide that,” Cheney responded. “I think we may well as a committee have a view on that. And if you just think about it from the perspective of, what kind of man knows that a m...
Infectious disease experts and public health advocates are warning that the Biden administration has been too slow to respond to the monkeypox outbreak and that the U.S. is at risk of losing control of the disease.  The response to monkeypox is mirroring the worst parts of the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, they say, with severely limited testing and a sluggish rollout of vaccines leading to a virus that’s spreading undetected. “Where we have lagged is streamlining testing, making vaccines available, streamlining access to the best therapeutics. All three areas have been bureaucratic and slow, and that means we haven’t contained this outbreak,” said David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD). Unlike COVID-19, ...
The fast-changing coronavirus has kicked off summer in the U.S. with lots of infections but relatively few deaths compared to its prior incarnations. COVID-19 is still killing hundreds of Americans each day, but is not nearly as dangerous as it was last fall and winter. “It’s going to be a good summer and we deserve this break,” said Ali Mokdad, a professor of health metrics sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle. With more Americans shielded from severe illness through vaccination and infection, COVID-19 has transformed — for now at least — into an unpleasant, inconvenient nuisance for many. “It feels cautiously good right now,” said Dr. Dan Kaul, an infectious diseases specialist at the University of Michigan Medical Center in An...
Global oil prices could reach a “stratospheric” $380 a barrel if US and European penalties prompt Russia to inflict retaliatory crude output cuts, JPMorgan Chase analysts warned. The Group of Seven leading industrial nations are working out a complicated mechanism to cap the price fetched by Russian oil in an attempt to tighten the screws on President Vladimir Putin amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But Moscow can afford to reduce daily crude production by 5 million barrels without excessively damaging the Russian economy, JPMorgan analysts including Natasha Kaneva wrote in a note to clients. For much of the rest of the world, however, the results could be disastrous. A 3 million barrel cut to daily supplies would push benchmark London crude prices that are ...

The suspected gunman, who is in custody, is a 22-year-old Danish man who was detained near the Fields shopping mall on the southern outskirts of the capital, said police inspector Søren Thomassen, head of the Copenhagen police operations unit. “We know that there are several dead” and “several injured,” Thomassen told a news conference, adding that terror can’t be ruled out. “We do not have information that others are involved. This is what we know now.” He didn’t provide any further details on the victims or supsect, or say how many people were...

Airlines have cancelled and delayed hundreds of flights in the U.S. sparking travel chaos during the busiest Fourth of July weekend since the pandemic, which has been dubbed 'Airmageddon.'  Around 48 million people are expected to travel this weekend with AAA estimating 3.5million would take to the air. But the actual number of passengers flying may be dramatically higher as, the Transportation Security Administration screened more than 2.4 million travelers at airports on Thursday alone - up 17 percent from the Fourth of July Friday in 2019.  Many fliers will be facing disappointment, with 604 flights canceled by 2:30pm, and 2,879 have been delayed, according to Flight Aware, which reported that by the end of Friday, 586 U.S. flights were called off and 7,773 were re...

Rabban Shimon ben Gamaliel used to say: on three things does the world stand: On justice, on truth and on peace, as it is said: “execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates”(Zecharya 8:16) (Avot 1:18). A Significant Peace Last week we saw that Rashba”g presents din and emet as two of the three values that sustain the world. The third value is shalom. Though we value and strive for justice and truth, it is critical that we also sustain and foster shalom. A world that values only truth and justice is not sustainable (Derech Eretz Zuta, Perek Shalom). The Torah places shalom at the climax of Birkat Kohanim (Bamidbar 6:26). Chazal followed suit with “all of our tefillot” (including Shemoneh Esrei, Bentching, and Kaddish). Shas Mishnayot also concludes...

Hunter Biden’s hard drive contained an enviable lineup of contacts for top US officials tasked with overseeing the US-China relationship, and at least 10 senior Google executives — raising new questions about the extent to which Joe Biden’s well-connected son could have leveraged his connections for personal profit, The NY Post reported today. Many of the top-level government officials would have been in position to help Hunter Biden’s business aspirations in China during father’s term as vice president from 2008 to 2016. Throughout that period, he infamously looked to capitalize from his family name and connections — often while his father conducted sensitive state business. As for the Google braintrust, one former exec there told The Post that Hunter...
Airlines have canceled more than 1,100 U.S. flights since Friday and nearly 11,000 were delayed, a tough start to a busy holiday weekend after a messy spring for air travel angered passengers and drew sharp criticism from Washington. On Friday, the delays included close to 1,000 American Airlines flights, nearly 30% of the carrier’s mainline schedule for the day, and 784 Delta flights, a quarter of the airline’s schedule, according to a tally from FlightAware. Thunderstorms delayed many flights at some of the country’s busiest hubs. Delays eased on Saturday but topped 3,000, less than half of Friday’s. Already this year, the rate of flight cancellations and delays in June was higher than before the pandemic as a result of ba...
An Ohio man who was previously arrested for allegedly threatening to commit a mass shooting at a Jewish school where he was employed as a security guard has been arrested by federal agents for building and selling untraceable “ghost guns” using a 3D printer. On Wednesday, federal authorities arrested Thomas Develin, the Justice Department said in a statement. Later in the day, Develin, a former Ohio National Guard member, made a court appearance on charged related to manufacturing and distributing the homemade guns. The Justice Department noted that Develin, 24, of Columbus, Ohio, was previously accused of making antisemitic and violent statements while working as a security services at local synagogues and Jewish schools. According to the statement, Develin stands accu...

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it intercepted "three hostile UAVs which approached the airspace over Israel's economic waters." Israel's Defense Minister Benny Gantz slammed the Iran-backed Shi'ite militia, saying in a statement that it was "preventing the state of Lebanon from reaching an agreement regarding maritime borders, which are critical to the economy and prosperity of the Lebanese nation."
