Anthony Fauci, the chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, suffered a rebound of Covid-19 symptoms after taking Pfizer Inc.’s antiviral Paxlovid, Bloomberg reports. Despite being fully vaccinated and twice-boosted, Fauci contracted Covid earlier this month and was prescribed Paxlovid due to his age – 81 – which puts him at high risk of developing complications. “After I finished the five days of Paxlovid, I reverted to negative on an antigen test for three days in a row,” Fauci said during an event at Foreign Policy’s Global Health Forum. “And then on the fourth day, just to be absolutely certain, I tested myself again. I reverted back to positive.” Scores of patients have reported the phenomenon, often called Covid rebound or Paxlovi...
Here's a wise thought from Dr. Rakefet Ben-Yishai:There is a story about a child who visited a circus and saw a large elephant tethered to a small stake. When the child asked why the elephant did not pull up the stake and run away, the circus people said: We tied him to the stake when he was small and weak and the stake was bigger and stronger than he was. In those days it was impossible for him to pull it up. Years passed, the elephant grew and got stronger but, in his eyes, pulling up the stake still seemed impossible. Even when it became clear to everyone that a little pull on the stake from the powerful elephant would set him free, his lack of awareness of his strength prevented him from trying to free himself. In the course of describing several stages of our desert journey, the T...
The Supreme Court on Thursday curbed the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ability to regulate climate change, setting limits on how the agency can deal with power plant emissions. In a 6-3 ruling, the justices determined that Congress did not authorize the EPA to induce a shift toward cleaner energy sources using the approach that an Obama-era regulation sought to. “Congress did not grant EPA … the authority to devise emissions caps based on the generation shifting approach the Agency took in the Clean Power Plan,” the majority wrote.  The ruling was spurred by an appeal to a decision last year that struck down a Trump-era power plant rule.  In appealing that decision, West Virginia asked the court to consider whether the EPA has the ...
The Supreme Court ruled for the Biden administration Thursday in a dispute over a Trump-era immigration policy that requires U.S. asylum seekers at the southern border to wait in Mexico while their applications are processed. The 5-4 ruling found that the administration did not violate federal immigration law when it sought to rescind the policy. The justices returned the case to lower courts for additional proceedings. Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, enacted in 2019, has remained in effect under President Biden despite his Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) effort to end it. Lower courts, in response to a red state legal challenge, have blocked DHS’s two attempts to unwind the policy. Under Trump, more than 70,000 asylum-seekers were...

As Israel heads to elections again, MK Simon Davidson of the Yesh Atid party was interviewed by the haredi Mishpacha newspaper. Davidson related something of his own life as a secular business owner who always shut up shop on Shabbat, as a result of something Rabbi Elazar Abuchatzera once told him: "That was one of the most significant decisions I made in my entire life." After endless speculations over the past month regarding his intention to stand as mayor of Netanya to replace Miriam Feierbeg, he still refuses to provide a direct answer to that question, but toward the end of the interview, he made a reference to his plans for the future, saying, "I'm going to be in the next Knesset, and I believe that I will be placed higher on the party's slate this time around."...
Talk of another campaign for president by Hillary Clinton is growing louder, including a recent interview with CBS’s Gayle King. Clinton told King she could not “imagine” running for president again, but King noted she did not say no. Clinton did tell the Financial Times she would not run if President Joe Biden were to officially run again, but that latter question should remain open due to his and his administration’s ongoing crises. While CNN is saying the “whispers of Hillary Clinton 2024 have started,” Newsmax host Dick Morris has long held the position that you can tell a politician – and Hillary Clinton – is running, by just checking for a pulse. Candidates just do not give up presidential aspirations, Morris, a former adviser to form...
The Treasury Department today announced the delivery of $1.3 billion in economic aid to Ukraine, as the United States seeks to help the beleaguered nation respond to the enormous financial impact of Russia’s invasion. The transferred funds – the first of $7.5 billion in economic aid approved by Congress last month – comes amid new estimates that Ukraine’s economy and infrastructure have suffered extensive damage from the war. Ukraine faces a monthly budget deficit of $5 billion and has sustained more than $100 billion in direct damage to its civilian infrastructure alone, according to analysts at the Kyiv School of Economics. The World Bank previously estimated that Ukraine’s economy could contract by as much as 45 percent this year. The $1.3 billion represe...
Palestinian sources said clashes erupted between Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants and IDF soldiers Palestinian gunfire and fireworks lightly wounded three Jewish worshipers at Joseph's Tomb in Nablus, the West Bank, according to reports early Thursday. The Samaria Regional Council said thousands of worshipers arrived overnight to pray at the Jewish holy site, which is located in the Palestinian Authority-controlled area. Footage on social media showed fierce clashes between the Israel Defense Forces and Palestinian militants. The gunmen, who Palestinian reports said were members of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, opened fire and hurled Molotov cocktails at the soldiers tasked with protecting the worshipers.
The national price of gasoline dropped for a second consecutive week just in time for a holiday weekend where many Americans will hit the road to travel for vacation and July 4 celebrations. The average price for a gallon of gas is $4.86, according to AAA, down 9 cents from a week ago but still $1.70 higher than last year. The main driver of the decrease at the pump has been a drop in crude oil prices, which make up roughly 60% of the cost of fuel. Some analysts attribute the drop in crude oil to fears of recessions in the world’s economies due to rising interest rates and inflation. “Fear is not a good reason to move a market like the one for oil, but it is a powerful motivator,” said Andrew Gross, a AAA spokesperson. “The cost of oil accounts for nea...
There’s renewed concern after an audit of the Baltimore Police Department released shows a number of Baltimore's CitiWatch cameras haven’t been functioning properly for more than a year. One man told WMAR-2 News it’s a problem the city can’t afford to leave unresolved as crime overloads officers. A deadly triple shooting Sunday, another murder on Monday, an officer dragged by a repeat violent offender Tuesday and a stand-off with that same suspect bleeding into Wednesday afternoon, it's a trend of violence, this week alone, Baltimore police are struggling with. A report from the office of legislative audits finds that a percentage of the cameras present when officers can’t be –simply don't work.
The same Baltimore City judge made plea deal with previously convicted felons who came back to commit violent crimes while out of jail. Judge Melissa Phinn previously ordered supervised probations for Austin Davidson, who was arrested for killing a Wicomico County deputy on June 12, and Joseph Black, accused of dragging a Baltimore City police officer for two blocks on Tuesday, according to court documents. Judge Phinn has been serving as the Associate Judge of Baltimire City Circuit County, 8th Judicial Court since 2013. Judge Phinn sentenced Austin Davidson to three years supervised probation on July 29, 2020 after he pleaded guilty to armed robbery in Baltimore. The Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office issued a statement, saying prosecutors had sought ja...
Ketanji Brown Jackson will be sworn in Thursday to formally become a Supreme Court justice, officially making her the nation’s first Black woman to serve in the role. She will fill the seat being vacated by the retiring Justice Stephen Breyer, 83, whose previously announced departure after nearly 28 years on the bench will take effect Thursday at noon. Jackson is expected to join Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan in forming a three-member liberal minority on the court, a role previously filled by Breyer, for whom Jackson once clerked. At 51, Jackson’s replacement of Breyer adds youth and diversity, and on certain issues a likely more liberal approach than Breyer, known for his judicial modesty and pragmatism. Although Jackson’s addition does not funda...
