On June 24th, the leadership of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America (Orthodox Union) issued the following statement: In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court issuing its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson, we reiterate the approach we articulated when a draft ruling in this case was leaked to the media last month. The Orthodox Union is unable to either mourn or celebrate the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v Wade. We cannot support absolute bans on abortion—at any time point in a pregnancy—that would not allow access to abortion in lifesaving situations. Similarly, we cannot support legislation that does not limit abortion to situations in which medical (including mental health) professionals affirm that carrying the pregnancy to term poses real risk to t...
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y) on Sunday said conservative U.S. Supreme Court justices who “misled” Americans during their confirmation hearings about whether or not they supported overturning Roe v. Wade should be impeached and face “consequences” for lying under oath. Ocasio-Cortez told NBC’s “Meet the Press” moderator Chuck Todd the Supreme Court “dramatically overreached its authority” and created a “crisis of legitimacy” that President Biden should address. “If we allow Supreme Court nominees to lie under oath and secure lifetime appointments to the highest court of the land and then issue — without basis, if you read these opinions — rulings that deeply undermine...
Israel employs nearly 100,000 workers from the West Bank and Gaza Israel's cabinet approved issuing 3,500 additional permits for Palestinian workers in its manufacturing and services sectors, increasing the number to 12,000 to help relieve a shortage of skilled staff, the Israeli Economy Ministry said on Sunday. Workers from the West Bank and Gaza Strip require permits to cross checkpoints and enter Israel, where wages are higher. Israel employs nearly 100,000 West Bank and Gazan workers, according to the Israeli Population and Immigration Authority. However, most work in construction or agriculture, with only a comparatively small number given permits for jobs in factories or the services sector. The jobless rate in Israel is roughly three percent, and...
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia temporarily delayed the FDA's ban on Juul devices on Friday after the e-cigarette giant called the agency's order "extraordinary and unlawful" in a court filing, the Wall Street Journal reports. The FDA said Thursday that it has not "received clinical information to suggest an immediate hazard associated with the use of" Juul devices, but that there is "insufficient evidence to assess the potential toxicological risks" of using the products. Juul hit back on Friday, arguing that it will "suffer significant irreparable harm." "In our applications, which we submitted over two years ago, we believe that we appropriately characterized the toxicological profile of JUUL products, including comparisons to combustible ci...
The robot will be used in the towns and cities surrounding Ukraine's capital Kyiv The US military reportedly gave one of its two robotic dogs to help an American nonprofit clean up mines and other ammunition left by the Russian army in Ukraine, Foreign Policy reported after talking to a source familiar with the case. The HALO Trust – a company with expertise in clearing landmines and other explosives – will use its ‘Spot,’ a robotic dog to remove mortar shells and cluster munitions in territories formerly controlled by Russia, Chris Whatley, the group’s executive director, told the publication. The robot will be used in the towns and cities surrounding Ukraine's capital Kyiv.  Last year, a test session showed that ...
'We understand that the solution goes further than public transport… walking and cycling' Israel’s government on Sunday approved the “One Million” plan, aimed at reducing private car travel in the country by five percent – one million trips per day – by the end of the year to "alleviate traffic congestion." It includes dozens of measures to improve the public transport system, eliminate incentives for owning a private vehicle, accelerate road work processes to reduce journey times, and changes in the world of work. “The goal of the program is to… encourage the use of public transportation to alleviate traffic congestion,” said Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, calling it a “significant message t...
What it means to go the extra mile.  Bill Riddick, a bus driver, recently spent three days taking a group of 8th grade boys from a Jewish school near Chicago around Washington DC on a class trip. He was so impressed with the boys that he decided to fly to Chicago to surprise them at their middle school graduation. "They’re an amazing group of boys,” Rabbi Yosef Cohen recently told Aish.com about his 8th graders at Arie Crown Hebrew Day School, an Orthodox Jewish school in Skokie, Illinois. The school places importance on developing one’s character traits and behaving with honor. The 8th grade graduates who modeled that behavior had no idea the impact they were about to make.  Bill Riddick and some of the boys from Arie Crown Hebrew Day School From t...
Baltimore, MD - June 26, 2022 - In Parshas Korach, Korach and his people complain that Moshe and Aharon should not have special positions for themselves, they too want positions. Moshe and Aharon, in their own ways, bring peace amongst the people. Aharon brings peace through warmth and love, while Moshe brings peace through maintaining the laws of Torah within the nation. Korach tries to say there is no need for separation, and divided positions, and thus, this is the root of his argument. Moshe’s stance shows how crucial it is to have that separate division in order to maintain peace amongst the nation. Click here to listen
Military will deploy more intelligence officers, use satellite images Israel is expanding its investigation into the death of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, Ynet reports. The military will deploy more intelligence officers and use satellite images in the investigation. Abu Akleh, 51, was killed by a bullet to the head on May 11 while covering an Israeli counterterrorism raid in the West Bank city of Jenin. She was wearing a helmet and a vest marking her as press when she was shot during a gun battle between Palestinian militants and Israeli forces. The Palestinian Authority (PA) and Abu Akleh's employer Al Jazeera immediately blamed Israel for her death and subsequent investigations by foreign media outlets CNN, The New York Time...

Rav Dovid Trenk, zt”l, had a special way of looking at people, believing in every individual with an unshakeable faith. It was with that conviction, accompanied by unbridled love and care, that he influenced anyone fortunate enough to enter his orbit. And no one saw this more than his devoted wife, Rebbetzin Leah Trenk. Rebbetzin Trenk watched for decades as her husband built people, infusing them with confidence and hope. She observed in amazement as he noticed the good in anyone and everyone, highlighting it and talking about it. His signature characteristic was ayin tovah. He had the ultimate good eye. In Living With Rebbi, a brand new film presented by Yoel Gold, Rebbetzin Trenk takes us behind the scenes, giving us an inside look at her relationship with h...

A reader from Carmiel sent me a notice last week regarding "Kikar Miami." At first glance, it looked like any other restaurant advertisement until I read the fine print: Each patron who says something positive or optimistic about the Land of Israel would receive a 10% discount. The discount was meant to coincide with the Shelach Torah portion, where most of the spies who scouted the Land of Israel returned with a gloomy and pessimistic report. I called the restaurant. One of the workers told me how people who came to the restaurant praised Israel's highly diversified landscape that includes deserts as well as snowy mountains. Some customers explained that the fruits, vegetables, and cheeses in Israel are the tastiest in the world. Others mentioned the special holiness of the Land. And...
Over 400,000 patio umbrellas sold at big box retailer Costco have been recalled due to a malfunction that can cause them to burst into flames. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall announcement this week after six reported incidents of product malfunction. One incident sent one person to a hospital with a smoke inhalation issue. "The firm has received six reports of the lithium-ion batteries overheating," the commission wrote. "This includes three reports of solar panels catching fire while charging via the AC adapter indoors and two reports of umbrellas catching fire when the solar panel puck overheated and caught fire while attached to the umbrella and one smoke inhalation injury." The CPSC urged owners of the umbrellas to stop using them immediat...
Following are Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's remarks at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting, today (Sunday, 26 June 2022): "For the first time in years, the harvest in the communities adjacent to the Gaza Strip has ended quietly and successfully, without incendiary balloons, fires or Hamas rockets. I would remind everyone that two days into our government's term, Hamas lit 26 fires and this was a daily routine for western Negev farmers. For years the State of Israel paid compensation to farmers in advance so that the farmers would harvest early, when their produce was not ripe and, therefore, of lesser quality. Instead of preventing Hamas fires, Israeli governments dealt in trying to compensate for the fires as if they were an act of G-d; this one did not. Together, we s...

Arizona state senators have said the Phoenix Police Department stopped an insurrection with their actions during a protest outside the state Capitol complex on Friday night. Riot police deployed tear gas as protesters banged on doors and windows during the demonstration. Despite the apparent seriousness of the protest, no arrests were made. According to a statement from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, there were around 8,000 people present at the protest in the hours after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, stripping abortion rights from millions in the process. Arizona is one of eight states where abortion clinics stopped performing procedures after the decision was released Friday. The police accused the protesters of defacing state memorial...
US President Joe Biden will meet with both Israel's caretaker prime minister Yair Lapid and the head of Israeli opposition Benjamin Netanyahu during the American leader's upcoming visit to Israel, an Israeli news outlet reported on Saturday, citing unnamed US officials. Biden will have to navigate a potential political minefield following the collapse of Naftali Bennett's government, as each meeting could be spun to imply an endorsement ahead of Israel's fifth election in three years.  The US leader shares a checkered history with Netanyahu, part of the latter's famously fractured relationship with former US president Barack Obama, whose deputy Biden was between 2008 and 2016.  In fact, the very possibility of a meeting with Netanyahu was cited ...
Gov. Ron DeSantis praised the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on Friday, saying, “The prayers of millions have been answered.” “For nearly fifty years, the U.S. Supreme Court has prohibited virtually any meaningful pro-life protection, but this was not grounded in the text, history or structure of the Constitution,” DeSantis said in a statement on Twitter. “By properly interpreting the Constitution, the Dobbs majority has restored the people’s role in our republic and a sense of hope that every life counts.” The governor said he would “work to expand pro-life protections” but was not specific about what that would entail. “Florida will continue to defend its recently-enacted pro-life reforms ag...
