The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled in favor of a death row inmate in Georgia who is challenging the state's lethal injection protocol and seeks to die by firing squad -- a method not currently authorized in the state. The court said the inmate could bring the challenge under a federal civil rights law that allows individuals to seek remedies when their Constitutional rights are violated. The decision could make it easier for inmates to challenge their potential execution method. The 5-4 majority opinion was written by Justice Elena Kagan, with Justice Amy Coney Barrett penning a dissent joined by Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch. Kagan said that the law at issue, Section 1983, "broadly authorizes suit against state officials for the deprivation...
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) stopped by the Sean Hannity Show to discuss the Jan 6 Committee hearings. Cruz says the hearings are a joke and essentially a commercial for the Democrats. “This is not a congressional hearing,” Cruz says. “This thing is a joke. This is not a congressional hearing. Congressional hearings are designed to be a fact-finding mission. You have opposing sides. This is a political Democratic campaign commercial,” Cruz says. “What would you think if you had a criminal trial, and the judge says ‘we’re only going to allow the prosecution to speak?” Meanwhile, during a recent panel discussion on Meet the Press NOW, NBC anchor Chuck Todd asked Politico correspondent Betsy Woodruff Swan, “Does the Jan. 6 hearing break throu...
The Baltimore City Council voted Thursday to approve Mayor Brandon Scott's $4 billion budget. Mayor Brandon Scott said the budget included $3.32 billion for operating expenses and $792.6 million for capital investment. Although the council has limited authority over the budget, this year's hearings were particularly detailed and contentious. The council members put particular emphasis on the city's public safety agencies as violent crime continued to surge in the city. Police Commissioner Michael Harrison, Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby, Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement Director Shantay Jackson and Sheriff John W. Anderson all sat for hours of questioning. In a rare move, the council -- unsatisfied with the answers from Sheriff...

At that time, I was a member of the government, serving as the Minister for Social Affairs and Social Services, and I will never forget Eli Hurvitz’s fascinating overview." The Eli Hurvitz Conference on Economy and Society, formerly the Caesarea Economic Policy Planning Forum, is regarded as Israel's mo...
The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday ruled the state of New York violated the Second and Fourteenth Amendments of the constitution when it began requiring residents to show a specific need when applying for a concealed carry permit. Writing for the 6-3 conservative majority, justice Clarence Thomas said "the constitutional right to bear arms in public for self-defense is not a second-class right, subject to an entirely different body of rules than the other Bill of Rights guarantees." RELATED: Supreme Court strikes down public firearm carry licensing law The decision has the potential to impact existing right-to-carry laws in Maryland. Similar to New York, to obtain a Wear and Carry Permit here in Maryland applicants must show "a good and substantial reason to wear, carry, or tra...

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a marketing denial order to Juul, telling the company to remove its e-cigarettes from the U.S. marketplace — a decision that promises to shake up the vaping market. The decision applies to "all of their products currently marketed in the United States," the FDA said. Citing the FDA's review of Juul, which accounts for a large portion of the U.S. e-cigarette market, FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf stated, "We recognize these make up a significant part of the available products and many have played a disproportionate role in the rise in youth vaping." The decision comes nearly two years after Juul submitted its application to the FDA, hoping to continue selling its products. As news of the FDA's decision emerged, it ...

The Supreme Court struck down a New York state law that made it difficult to obtain a handgun carry permit, marking the justices’ first major opinion on Second Amendment rights in more than a decade. The 6-3 decision to invalidate New York’s law throws into question the legality of similar restrictions in more than a half dozen other states that give licensing officials wide discretion over concealed carry permitting. The ruling broke along ideological lines, with the court’s six conservatives joining a majority opinion written by Justice Clarence Thomas. The court’s three liberals, in dissent, accused the conservative majority of failing to consider “the potentially deadly consequences of its decision.” The ruling comes after recent mass s...

The White House has been working on a “road map for normalization” between Israel and Saudi Arabia ahead of President Joe Biden’s visit to the Middle East next month, four US sources briefed on the issue told Barak Ravid of Axios on Wednesday. The White House last week held a briefing with think tank experts about Biden’s trip to the region and floated the theme of a “road map for normalization” without elaborating, the four sources said. Officials said during the briefing that there will not be an agreement before Biden's visit, but they are working on it and the President will discuss it with Israeli and Saudi leaders during the trip, the sources added. The White House thinks that any road map for normalization will take time and will...

Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby said Gordon could face life in prison, suspending all but 50 years. "The priority in this case, like all cases, is to deliver justice on behalf of the victim and their family," Mosby said.
