The nosi of the Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah of Shas, Chacham Shalom Cohen, who is at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital where he is convalescing, was updated yesterday on the end of the Bennett-Lapid government. The Rosh Yeshiva stated: “Hashem’s name is sanctified in the world. A government that harmed and sought to destroy Judaism and … harmed the weak is gone from the world. Hakadosh Boruch Hu is merciful to His people, Klal Yisroel.” Not long ago, Rav Cohen had expressed his pain at the harsh decrees on the world of Torah and Yahadus and said: “They think they can harm G-d, but they will repent or fall!” Even after MK Idit Silman pulled out of the government two and a half months ago, Rav Cohen remarked, &l...
The United States Supreme Court today issued a landmark ruling that positively impacts religious schools’ ability to participate in state aid programs. The Court ruled that the First Amendment’s Free Exercise Clause prohibits states from discriminating not only against schools that identify as religious, but also those that actively teach religious subjects. This ruling eases the way for state aid to flow to parents who choose to send their children to religious schools.  Agudath Israel of America, along with several other Orthodox Jewish groups, submitted an amicus brief in the case, authored by constitutional scholar Nathan Lewin.  The case, Carson v. Makin, involved a Maine law that required the state to pay for a student’s tuition in the event that the dis...
Baltimore, MD - June 19, 2022 - Kesser Torah is currently in the midst of a matching campaign to complete the renovations on its Bais Medrash and help ensure that its building is befitting a Ben Torah. Kesser Torah offers a mesivta for local bochurim and a Bais Medrash for talmidim from across the country. The mesivta currently has close to 90 students from local mosdos. The mesivta looks for 8th-grade students who desire to grow in their learning and Yiras Shamayim in a serious yet warm environment. The yeshiva was founded over five years ago by Rabbi Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim, a noted rebbe, and menahel from Yeshivas Toras Chaim of Denver, and his son, Rabbi Avrohom Feldheim, a young and energetic rebbe and assistant menahel from the Mechina of South Florida. The Bais Medrash, now consist...
Washington, DC, June 21, 2022 — Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV), today celebrated the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Carson v. Makin, striking down a Maine law that denied subsidies of the costs of fulfilling state secular education requirements to parents who chose sectarian schooling for their children. The decision, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, impacts other forms of tuition assistance in states across the country, determining that it is unconstitutional to exclude parents choosing religious schools from these programs. CJV Managing Director Rabbi Yaakov Menken issued the following statement: The Maine law was obviously prejudicial against religiously-motivated parents, forcing them to choose between shouldering secular education costs entirely on their own or denying...
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 Tuesday that a Maine tuition assistance program violated the First Amendment's Free Exercise Clause for excluding religious schools from eligibility. The program provides tuition assistance for students without a local public school to attend private institutions – as long as the funding is not used for religious or "sectarian" teaching.  "Maine’s ‘nonsectarian’ requirement for its otherwise generally available tuition assistance payments violates the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the court's opinion in the case of Carson v. Maykin. "Regardless of how the benefit and restriction are described, the program operates to identify and exclude otherwise eli...
The Achronim ask a chakira regarding tzitzis. Is the “begged” of the tzitzis considered part of the mitzvah or is it considered a hechsher mitzvah, as we find that a house is just a hechsher for the mezuzah.  The Bais HaLevi in 1:5 and the Avnei Nezer Yoreh Deah 390 say that the ikkar reason one puts on the “begged” of tzitzis is to have an extra covering on the body. The Kehillas Yaakov in Yevamos 7 concurs and says the mitzvah of making tzitzis only applies to the strings of the tzitzis but putting on the begged itself is not the mitzvah.  The Shailos U’Tshuvos Ere...

The donations came from more than 12,682 individual donors from the United States, Israel, Belgium, Canada, South Africa and the United Kingdom. This year’s participating institutions includ...

Baltimore, MD - June 21, 2022 - The metaphor of Eretz Yisroel as a mother is rich and multidimensional. As our homeland, Eretz Yisroel provides a sense of ‘’makom’’- the comfort of safe space, and the grounding influence characteristic of a human mother. We ‘’nurse’’ the land for sustenance, feeling the innate trust of a baby towards his mother. Click here to listen
The word "elections" came back into our lives in Israel yesterday and together with it the words "after the elections." These are magic words for "postponement" because, for the next four months, it will no longer be the appropriate time for anything other than following surveys, polls, and campaigns. The Book of Numbers presents a different frame of mind. Just as we say "after the elections," "after the holidays," "after graduation," the Nation of Israel could have said "after the desert." First let's reach the Promised Land and then we can start doing what we are supposed to do.But in the Torah portions that we are currently reading, it is noted time and again that as soon as the people arrived at a new place, they immediately erected the MIshkan, the people's spiritual center a...
Five major US cities are already on track to break their steep 2021 homicide figures — suggesting a particularly violent summer ahead. This year’s homicide numbers for Los Angeles, Washington DC, Baltimore, Milwaukee and Atlanta have all surpassed the rates reached at the same time in 2021, according to the data, first reported by Fox News. Milwaukee has been the city with the largest spike, recording 96 homicides as of June 17 — a 25% increase compared to its 77 figure recorded this time last year. In Washington DC, there have already been 93 homicides compared to the 82 in its first six months of 2021, or a 13% jump. Atlanta’s rate has increased more than 13% compared to last year, too, with 68 homicides across the city as of June 11 compared to...
Vice President Kamala Harris bungled a history lesson about the Juneteenth holiday Monday, telling kids that black people were enslaved in America for 400 years — overstating the actual time period by more than 150 years. “I think that we all know today is a day to celebrate the principle of freedom,” Harris told a group of about two dozen elementary school-age children at the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington. “And think about it in terms of the context of history, knowing that black people in America were not free for 400 years of slavery.” “Let this be a day that is a day to celebrate the principle of freedom, but to speak about it honestly and accurately, both in the context of history and current application,&...
MK Uri Maklev of the United Torah Judaism party on Tuesday morning said that if former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not succeed in winning 61 Knesset seats in the upcoming elections, UTJ will hold negotiations with Defense Minister Benny Gantz (Blue and White). "If Netanyahu will not succeed in forming a government, and Gantz will, we will be able to reach an agreement with or without a rotation," Maklev told Galatz. "It is too early to examine this, but we have not ruled it out for a moment." This is not the first time Maklev has made such statements: One month ago, he admitted that the haredi parties lose out due to their insistence in sticking with Netanyahu. "That we should justify the personal disqualification of Netanyahu? But it is true that the reality is tha...
Israeli Finance Minister Avidgor Liberman blamed Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu for the government’s decision Monday to call for new elections, saying the former premier is to blame for the country’s years-long political deadlock. Speaking at the Eli Hurvitz Conference on Economics and Society morning, Liberman attributed the failure to secure a stable government since his own party’s departure from the 34th Government in late 2018 to the political machinations of Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu. “First off, let it be known that the elections now are a result of intrigue, lies, and the subversion committed by one man – his name is Benjamin Netanyahu. And it is the same with all the previous elections,” Liberman continued, referring to the fo...
As of Monday morning, the death toll stood at 10,908, including the 13 deaths over the past week Over 10,000 new Covid cases were recorded in Israel on Sunday, the highest number since April 4, according to Health Ministry data released Monday.  Of the 26,200 authorized PCR and antigen tests taken on Sunday, 38.95 percent returned positive. Israel's R-number stands at 1.32, a slight increase from the day before. Earlier in the month, the R-number stood at 1.52. The figure is based on rates from ten days earlier, measuring how many people each Covid carrier infects on average. Any number above one means the virus is spreading.
Former President Donald Trump’s stranglehold on the GOP may be loosening as he weighs whether to launch a third presidential campaign and some of his challengers gain ground. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is Trump’s chief challenger so far in most polling and enjoys strong favorability ratings from his constituents as he has taken on the White House head-on in fights over COVID-19 restrictions and vaccines, and waded into culture wars on transgender rights, critical race theory and abortion. For the second year in a row, DeSantis beat Trump in a straw poll at a conservative summit in Colorado and is frequently the top candidate in polls that do not include the former president. In polls that do include Trump, DeSantis has come in second place and started ...
Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu is attempting to form a new government in the current Knesset, a senior Likud official said Tuesday. The Likud party on Tuesday pushed back on a proposal by Yesh Atid to pass legislation Wednesday dissolving the 24th Knesset. The Knesset Presidium gave approval Tuesday morning for a vote Wednesday in the Knesset plenum on the bill to dissolve the Knesset. A senior Likud official told Israel National News that the Likud is opposed to the immediate dissolution of the Knesset in order to give Netanyahu an opportunity to try to establish a new government. “He is really taking advantage of these remaining hours,” the official said, in order to determine whether there is any possibility of forming a new government in the current Knes...
A fake user took advantage of the glitch Nearly 100 Israeli army officers and defense officials had their personal details revealed in a security breach in the Strava exercise app, which also disclosed locations of secret army bases.  The breach was discovered by the Israeli open source investigative group FakeReporter and was reported to the country’s government, according to Haaretz.  Compromised data included names, photos and movements of the officers who used a popular running and hiking app, as well as locations of sensitive military sites in Israel, such as Mossad headquarters, secret army, air force and intelligence bases.  The disinformation watchdog, that received a tip on a loophole in Strava's privacy settings, revealed that a fake use...
'All red lines have not only been crossed, they have been shattered,' Israel's embassy said Jewish leaders and Israel's embassy to Germany on Monday voiced "disgust" over anti-Semitic images on display at Documenta, one of the world's biggest art fairs. Documenta had been clouded in controversy for months over its inclusion of a Palestinian artists' group strongly critical of the Israeli occupation. Two days after the show opened to the public, one of the works on display by Indonesian art group Taring Padi also came under fire over depictions that both the German government and Jewish groups say went too far. On the offending mural is the depiction of a pig wearing a helmet blazoned "Mossad." On the same work, a man is depicted with sidelocks oft...
