Eggs will get even more expensive after U.S. production plummeted to a seven-year low during one of the worst-ever bird flu outbreaks. The price for eggs is set to rise as much as 21% compared to a year ago, the biggest increase among all food staples tracked by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In April, the outlook was for an increase of 6% to 7%. The outbreak of avian influenza has affected more than 38 million birds in the U.S., driving both the number of egg-laying birds and the production of table eggs down to the lowest level since 2015, the last time the bird flu virus ran rampant in the poultry industry. Costs for fats and oils are also rising, as the USDA raised the price estimate to as much as 11% over the past year.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke attempted to derail Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's response to the shooting in Uvalde, Texas, on Wednesday. Abbott spoke for roughly ten minutes before attempting to transfer the microphone to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, at which point O'Rourke approached the stage. Only some of O'Rourke's words were audible, but he was pointing aggressively at the stage even as those on it shouted him down. Patrick said "sir, you are out of line, please leave this auditorium." Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin shouted at O'Rourke as well. O'Rourke was then escorted out of the auditorium. Prior to the interruption, Abbott praised the response of police officers who stopped the attack from getting any worse. One officer who r...
Rabbi Simcha Hakohen Kook, who passed away last night at the age of 92, did so many great things: He was the beloved Chief Rabbi of the city of Rechovot for decades and Rabbi of the "Hurva" Synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem. He was President of the "Meor Hatalmud" yeshiva in Rechovot and stood at the head of many other educational institutions throughout the years. He was an eloquent speaker who was much sought after by audiences both in Israel and abroad and led many public struggles, especially in building bridges between the non-observant and religious sectors. But among his most memorable deeds, personally speaking, was his officiating our wedding. He was the brother of the grandfather of Yedidya, my husband, and hosted us in his home in Rechovot on Shabbat prior to the wedding. It...

Baltimore, MD - May 25, 2022: Dear Friends, Nelson Mandela wrote, “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” How can we understand the murder of 19 innocent children along with two of their dedicated teachers? Can our minds comprehend the profundity of this tragedy? Can our hearts feel the deep chasm of pain? I was travelling yesterday and somehow missed the news out of Uvalde, Texas until a bit later in the evening, and I still find myself wandering in a fog. How can this happen in our great nation? How is it that mass shootings have become more regular occurrences in our civilized country? How can it be that our precious children are gunned down in their classrooms? We know how this story progresses. Tra...
Wednesday, 25 May 2022 / 24 Iyar 5782 President Isaac Herzog’s full speech: We gather here at the World Economic Forum in Davos after a two-year hiatus, as the world continues to gradually re-emerge to normalcy. Yet we realize that the new normal is drastically different from the reality we had put on hold. After millions lost their lives in the paralyzing COVID-19 pandemic, the past few months have presented us with the unfolding tragedy in Ukraine. Our hearts break seeing the tragic devastation being inflicted on the people of Ukraine. The State of Israel continues to provide extensive humanitarian support to the Ukrainian people. The Israeli field hospital in Ukraine treated thousands of civilians; thousands of Israeli volunteers are operating in Ukraine and around it, to assis...

How much is too much? Maryland’s Prescription Drug Affordability Board sharpened its focus Monday on establishing a process to impose upper price limits for some prescription drugs in the state. Maryland, a pioneer in establishing a cost control board for medications, has no definition for “upper payment limits” within its state code. “So for our purposes, it means the maximum amount paid or reimbursed for a prescription drug product,” said Andrew York, the executive director for the Prescription Drug Affordability Board, Michele J. McDonald, general counsel from the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, said that this gives the board the flexibility to set its own limit. York, who presented a report to board members Monday, said the board w...
Zacharia Wallerstein gazed out the window of his seventh-grade classroom window and watched, fascinated, as a handful of butterflies flitted in the warm, summer air.  Turning his attention back to his yeshiva classroom, he raised his hand.  “Rebbi,” he wanted to know, “why has God created the miracle process by which the homely caterpillar metamorphoses into a magnificent butterfly?” (Mishpacha Issue 910 - May11, 2022) The rebbi’s annoyed response did not deter Zecharia from running off to the local library to study, “…everything there was to know about how a caterpillar morphs into a butterfly.”    Over the course of his too short life, the butterfly became for Rabbi Zecharia Wallerstein a fascinating study, a symbol a...
Baltimore police data shows an uptick in convenience store robberies, but police have not said exactly why we're seeing that increase. It's a crime that's causing concern for some clerks. At the Zack Mini Mart on North Avenue near Pennsylvania Avenue, there's a small convenience store with big concerns. Waddah Albana, a clerk at his cousin's store, says he's mindful of security and would-be robbers. "We close the door. We give service from the window," Albana said. "Like right now, somebody could come in with a gun and put it in my head. I got to give them all the money within one minute. It's going to take him less than one minute to get it." Security measures are in place, including a bulletproof barrier between the clerk and customers. The store h...
Baltimore County Police Chief Melissa Hyatt is calling a vote to remove her from her position, 'a minor distraction'. Monday night, Baltimore County's Fraternal Order of Police voted to call on the County Executive to remove Chief Hyatt saying they'd lost all faith and confidence in the chief. "No one abstained and no one voted no," said FOP President Dave Folderaeur. Folderaeur estimates about 150 union members attended Monday night's meeting and cast a vote of no confidence. The union has more than 1,700 members. "I'm not going to be distracted by a very small fraction of the department," said Chief Hyatt on Tuesday. In a letter to the county executive, FOP members cited Hyatt's lack of accessibility to officers and her inability to bring down cri...

Baltimore, MD - May. 24, 2022:Dear JCC Friends,  This afternoon, May 24,  we received a bomb threat via email. The language was consistent with the email we received a week and a half ago. After consulting with security officials and our local police, the threat was deemed not credible.  We did clear the facility at the Weinberg Park Heights JCC at the recommendation of local police and the campus is back to full operations. We did not evacuate in Owings Mills upon the recommendation of the police.  At both JCCs, local police did a sweep of the building. Thanks to the many staff who helped to address this disturbing situation. Unfortunately, these email bomb threats are happening at several JCCs across North America. We work closely with local law enforcement, our ons...
