For thousands of years, Jews read passages from this week's Haftarah and waited. On Shabbat morning, after reading from the Torah, they will read these stirring passages from the Prophet Jeremiah once again. Jerusalem is in the midst of the Babylonian siege. These are the last days before the destruction of the city. The Prophet Jeremiah, who had been thrown into prison, is commanded by G-d to do something that makes no sense: to buy a field in the nearby city of Anatot.Jeremiah responds by drawing up a bill of sale, gathering witnesses, and executing the real estate transaction, despite the horribly dark realization that the nation is going into exile. And then, in that very moment of impending doom, Jeremiah makes an astonishing statement: "Houses and vineyards shall again be purcha...
Agudath Israel expresses our grief after the horrific racially-motivated shooting in Buffalo, New York, yesterday. Our condolences to the victims’ families, and our prayers for those injured. The shooter, a self-proclaimed white supremacist and antisemite, killed ten and injured three more – almost all of whom were Black – in a deadly massacre. In a 180-page hate-filled racist and antisemitic manifesto, the shooter labeled his forthcoming attack as “terrorism.” We agree, and we call upon the full force of the judicial system to punish the shooter to the extent the law allows.  We stand in solidarity with the Black community which suffered the deeply painful blow of yesterday’s shooting. In our grief for their loss, we must all renew our efforts to...

The national average gas price hit a record high, and is expected to continue rising as the energy supply crunch in the U.S. rages on. The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. rose to a record Sunday morning to $4.47, according to the latest numbers from AAA. The price on Saturday was $4.452.  Some states with higher-than-average prices include California at $5.92 a gallon, and Hawaii at $5.32. Diesel also hit its own highest recorded cost just above $5.56. Before Russia was hit with sanctions for invading Ukraine, threatening the already tight global oil market, the national average was at $3.53, according to Andy Lipow, the president of Lipow Oil Associates. He estimated that the national average could soon surge as high as $4.50 per gal...
Russia has likely lost one-third of its ground combat forces in Ukraine and the forces who remain are depleted and have been unable to make any territorial progress in recent weeks, British intelligence officials said early Sunday. Russia "has now likely suffered losses of one-third of the ground combat force it committed in February," the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense said in an update. "Russia’s Donbas offensive has lost momentum and fallen significantly behind schedule," the report continued. "Despite small-scale initial advances, Russia has failed to achieve substantial territorial gains over the past month whilst sustaining consistently high levels of attrition." The UK government also said these losses will "almost certainly" be worsened as t...
Daoud Zabuidi, the terrorist who opened fire towards soldiers in Jenin on Friday, died of his wounds at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa Sunday morning. Daoud was the brother of Zakaria Zubeidi, an Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade terrorist responsible for a terrorist attack in Beit She'an in which six people were killed and one of the terrorists who briefly escaped from the Gilboa Prison last year. Zubeidi was transferred to Rambam on Friday while being anesthetized and placed on assisted breathing, and was treated in serious condition. He was treated in intensive care and this morning was pronounced dead. Zubeidi was injured during an exchange of gunfire in Jenin by a bullet that penetrated his abdomen. He was evacuated by the Red Crescent to Jenin Hospital and from there transfer...

Sunday coincides with the Jewish festival of Pesach Sheni Hamas on Saturday issued a warning against Jews visiting the Temple Mount on Sunday, when the Palestinian Nakba Day and the minor Jewish festival of Pesach Sheni, or Second Passover, coincide. Instead, the Gaza Strip-based terrorist group called for a mass Palestinian turnout to Islam's third holiest site (which is also the holiest site in Judaism).  Of the possibility of Jews present on Temple Mount, the Hamas statement said that "breaking into the Al-Aqsa mosque on the Nakba day and Israel's approval of such is a dangerous escalation that plays with the emotions of the Palestinian nation and the Arab people."  Allowing Jews to visit the Temple Mount would be tantamount to "encouraging clashes for which Is...
After an international outcry over clip showing border police hitting pall bears Israeli police on Saturday announced a probe into the actions of border policemen during the funeral of an Al Jazeera reporter, following an international outcry over videos showing Israeli security forces pummeling the Palestinian pallbearers with batons. In a statement, police said that they had planned for a “calm and dignified” funeral for Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed on Wednesday in controversial circumstances, but “hundreds of rioters tried to sabotage the ceremony and harm the police.”  “The Israel Police will be looking into the events that ensued during the funeral,” the statement read. “The Israel Police supports its po...
The UN Security Council urges an 'immediate, thorough, transparent, and fair and impartial investigation' A Palestinian official said Saturday that the Palestinian Authority (PA) would welcome the involvement of international groups in a probe of the death of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh – who was killed earlier this week during an Israeli operation in the West Bank. Aqleh’s death sparked an outpour of grief as footage of the reporter’s funeral showed Israeli police clashing with a crowd of Palestinian mourners in Jerusalem on Friday, drawing international condemnation. The violence added to Palestinian outrage over Abu Aqleh’s killing, which threatened to fuel tensions that have been escalating since March. While...

US officials on Friday criticized Israel after violent clashes broke out during the funeral of Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Aqleh, who was killed during an exchange of gunfire between IDF troops and Palestinian Arab terrorists in Jenin earlier this week. While the Israel Police had taken action before the funeral in an attempt to prevent clashes, hundreds of Arabs gathered at the funeral, shouted calls of incitement and later also threw rocks the police officers, who were forced to take action to disperse the rioters. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki described the footage from the funeral as “deeply disturbing”. “We have all seen those images, they’re obviously deeply disturbing. We regret the intrusion of what should have been a peace...
The American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ) has been retained to represent over two dozen Jews who were not allowed to board a Lufthansa flight. The flight, traveling from Frankfurt to Budapest, did not allow any Jews to board after some refused to wear masks. It is estimated that around 150 Jews were affected. In a statement following the incident, Lufthansa said, "We apologize to all the travelers unable to travel on this flight, not only for the inconvenience, but also for the offense caused and personal impact. What transpired is not consistent with Lufthansa’s policies or values." In a post on their site, ACLJ wrote that, "We have already spoken with Lufthansa’s legal team and put them on notice regarding our representation. We will be moving forwa...
The U.S. baby formula shortage has sparked a surge of interest at milk banks around the U.S. with some mothers offering to donate breast milk and desperate parents calling to see if it's a solution to keep their babies fed. It's a pathway that won't work for every formula-fed baby, especially those with special dietary needs, and it comes with challenges because the country's dozens of nonprofit milk banks prioritize feeding medically fragile infants. The organizations collect milk from mothers and process it, including through pasteurization, then work with hospitals to distribute it. The shortage stemmed from a safety recall and supply disruptions and has captured national attention with panicked parents looking to swap and buy formula online and President...
