Ten people were killed Saturday at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, authorities said. Three others were wounded and are expected to survive. Police said the suspected shooter was wearing tactical gear when he approached the Tops Market and began shooting people in the parking lot before entering the store. A security guard shot the 18-year-old, but authorities said it hit him in the tactical gear. The security guard was killed when the shooter returned fire, police said. Authorities said Buffalo police quickly responded to the grocery store and talked the suspect into dropping his gun before surrendering. Police say the suspect was live-streaming the shooting on a social media platform. The FBI is investigating the shooting as an act of racially-motivated violent extremism, which...
The House Oversight and Reform Committee is launching an investigation into the ongoing baby formula shortage, pressing the four largest domestic manufacturers for documents and information about the steps they are taking to alleviate the crisis. The four companies — Abbott, Reckitt Benckiser, Nestlé and Perrigo — control nearly 90 percent of the U.S. market for baby formula. “The national formula shortage poses a threat to the health and economic security of infants and families in communities throughout the country—particularly those with less income who have historically experienced health inequities, including food insecurity,” committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) wrote to the comp...
The Weekly Shtikle is dedicated le'iluy nishmas my father, Reuven Pinchas ben Chaim Yaakov, a"h. At the beginning of this week's parsha, (21:2) we are told that a kohein, although he is not permitted to become temei meis, is allowed to do so for his mother or father and other immediate family. The midrash on this pasuk states that after the pasuk has told me that he may become tamei for his mother, I might have thought only for his mother may he become tamei for she is definitely his mother. But his father is technically uncertain, for we can never be 100% sure that this is in fact his father, but we consider him his father only by a chazakah, an assumption of sorts. Therefore, we might have tho...
Public health experts are divided over how many people are getting long COVID-19, a potentially debilitating condition that comes after a patient has recovered from the coronavirus. Ill effects from the condition can include fatigue, pain, neurological issues and even changes in mental health. Initially, public health officials believed that only a small minority of people would suffer from long COVID-19. But some studies now indicate a majority of those infected with the coronavirus are experiencing long COVID-19 symptoms. Still, estimates on the numbers of people with long COVID are all over the map. Researchers from the Penn State College of Medicine found that more than half of COVID-19 survivors had long COVID-19. Another study from the University of Ariz...
An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a new study finds blueberries may be better for your brain. Researchers from the University of Cincinnati have found that a half-cup of blueberries can keep middle-aged adults from developing dementia as they get older. Moreover, the study finds adding the fruit to your diet lowers insulin levels and improves metabolic function — making it easier to burn fat for energy. It’s worth noting that the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council of Folsom, California provided the funding for this research. What makes blueberries so special? Although blueberries are fairly similar to other berries and plants like red cabbage, study author Robert Krikorian notes this superfood contains high levels of micronutrients and antioxidants called a...
The moon will plunge into darkness this weekend to create a celestial spectacle that has not been seen in the sky over the entire contiguous United States since the turn of the decade. Just as the sun sets over North America on Sunday evening, the sun, Earth and moon will begin to align to create a total lunar eclipse. Folks may have to stay awake later than usual for a chance to see Sunday night's eclipse as it unfolds throughout the first half of the night. However, losing some sleep will be worth it as the eclipse could be the top astronomy event of 2022. This weekend's event will be the first total lunar eclipse visible from the entire contiguous U.S. since Jan. 21, 2019. There was a total lunar eclipse visible from the country on May 26, 2021, but it could be seen fr...

Jen Psaki had been White House press secretary for less than two weeks when a reporter asked whether Twitter's ban of Donald Trump had made President Joe Biden's life easier. "We don't spend a lot of time talking about or thinking about President Trump here," she responded, then added for emphasis: "Former President Trump." It was an early indication of what was to come with this press secretary. Her briefings were professional and typically congenial, but could turn pointed in a hurry. The sessions were informative but generally lacked the drama to draw big ratings on cable television. Psaki, whose last day on the job is Friday, has answered reporters' questions nearly every weekday of the almost 500 days that Biden has been in office. Th...
The Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office says scammers are using their phone number to call and extort people out of money. Complaints about the scam calls have come from as far as New York. The scammers use sophisticated technology to make it look as if the Sheriff's Office is trying to call. When someone answers, the scammers pose as deputies and demand payment under the false threat of an arrest warrant. The phony deputies then blackmail their victims into using various apps such as Apple Pay and Venmo to collect the money. "If you receive such a call, note the information given including the number displayed on your caller ID and hang up," said Major Sabrina Tapp Harper. "Never give any personal or financial information to unknown callers." Tapp-Harper added that the Sherif...
I was recently visiting the Amazon.   No, I am not talking about the epic Amazon River that runs through South America; rather, I am talking about the Amazon that everyone else visits: the online Amazon store!  Anyways, to keep a short story short, I was looking around on the Amazon website, and I chanced upon a décor picture that had the following inspirational quote on it:  “Good morning, this is G-d. I will be handling all your problems today. I will not need your help so have a great day.”  “Wow,” I thought to myself, “what a wonderful quote.” I truly felt uplifted and inspired. I felt that this quote portrayed such positive vibes. It was a reminder for me that despite all of life’s ups and downs, G-d is the One i...

There’s continuing speculation that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is suffering severe health problem as rumours over a potential successor now have eyes on a young mystery man he was close with at the Victory Day parade. He has appeared unsteady and weak in recent pubic appearances, and sparked further speculation when he missed an ice hockey match that has been a regular date in his diary for a decade. But If Putin were to step down – or be ousted – the big question is who would replace him? In the short term Mikhail Mishustin, the Prime Minister, would automatically assume power if the leader died or became incapacitated. But Kremlin watchers are tipping Dmitry Kovalev as a possible future leader. Kovalev, a member of the President...

Those who took part in the conversation believe that Bennett's concern is genuine Israel's Prime Minister Naftali Bennett reportedly feared that Ra'am head Mansour Abbas would be assassinated in private talks with two political figures, according to Friday reports. “Mansour Abbas is in mortal danger and might be murdered," Bennett said, according to Haaretz. He did not elaborate on the basis of his assessment or whether there is intelligence on the matter, saying that the concern is that Israeli Arab citizens who oppose Ra'am's participation in the coalition will be influenced by "wild incitement."  Those who took part in the conversation believe that Bennett's concern is genuine.  Abbas has received threats upon the esta...
