Israeli military investigations said Friday that they have been unable thus far to determine whether an Arab-American journalist killed during a gunfight in Jenin Wednesday was struck by a bullet fired by Israeli soldiers or Palestinian Arab terrorists. An IDF spokesperson on Friday announced the interim findings of an army probe into the death of Shireen Abu Aqleh, the 51-year-old Jerusalem-born journalist who was shot dead after terrorists opened fire on Israeli soldiers in Jenin Wednesday morning, sparking a firefight. “It is the interim finding of the investigation that the source of the fire which killed the journalist cannot be determined,” the spokesperson said. Investigators said there are two likely sources of the fatal gunfire: “massive gunfire by armed ...
An Israeli police from an elite combat unit in the Border Police was seriously wounded Friday during a counterterrorism operation in northern Samaria, authorities revealed Friday afternoon. The officer, a member of the Border Police’s Yamam unit, was wounded after Arab terrorists opened fire on Israeli forces operating in Jenin Friday morning. The officer was airlifted to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa for treatment, and is listed in serious but stable condition. IDF soldiers, Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) officers, and Border Police officers took part in a series of raids Friday, part of a joint counterterrorism operation in Judea and Samaria aimed at rounding up wanted terror suspects. Two wanted terrorists were arrested in Jenin, following a lengthy standoff in th...
At the end of Parshas Emor, the Torah conveys the tragic story of the “Ben Ish Mitzri”, the son of a Jewish woman, Shulamis Bas Divri from Shevet Dan and an unnamed Mitzri father.  The Mepharshim fill in many of the blanks related to the history involved here. (who was his father, why he harbored such anger, etc.) Irrespective of those issues, the narrative in the Psukim leaves us a little perplexed.  Rashi tells us that this individual attempted to set up his tent and claim a Chelek within the camp of Shevet Dan – the Shevet of his mother.  When he was made to feel unwelcome there, he brought his complaint to Moshe Rabeinu – “I’m a Jew by virtue of my mother, yet Chalakim are being given out only by paternal lineage.  I have no Chele...
Mortgage rates continued to climb this week, adding more financial strain on hopeful home buyers as they wade into the competitive spring and summer markets. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.3%, a rise from last week, when it averaged 5.27%, according to data released Thursday by Freddie Mac. This time last year, the 30-year rate was 2.94%. The rate for the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.48%, down from last week’s average of 4.52%. A year ago at this time, it averaged 2.26%. The five-year adjustable-rate averaged 3.98%, up from last week’s 3.96%. A year ago at this time, it averaged 2.59%. “Monthly payments have increased by more than 50% in just four months because of higher mortgage rates,” said George Ratiu, a senior economist with Realtor.co...
According to the bill's text, all Iraqi officials are banned from establishing diplomatic relations with Israel or calling for normalization, including officials in the northern Kurdistan region. In September, a conference advocating for Iraq to join the Abraham Accords was held in the Kurdistan region's capital of Erbil that was attended by more than 300 Kurds, Sunnis and Shias. Israel in 2020 established diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain as part of the US-brokered Abraham Accords peace initiative, with the later additions of Morocco and Sudan. The anti-Israel bill was introduced by the bloc led by Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr which won the most seats in parliamentary elections last October. Al-Sadr called for his members to in...
The committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob has subpoenaed five Republican members of Congress, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California, after they refused to cooperate with the panel’s inquiry. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., who chairs the select committee, said Thursday that the panel has subpoenaed McCarthy and Reps. Mo Brooks of Alabama, Andy Biggs of Arizona, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania and Jim Jordan of Ohio. The move marks a significant escalation in the committee’s efforts to obtain information related to lawmakers’ communications with then-President Donald Trump and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows before, during and after the attack. In a statement, Thompson said the committee &ldquo...
The coronavirus pandemic has created a number of shortages and now a new one can be added to the list: a shortage of baby formula. While parents might be looking for ways to improvise amid the supply crunch, MU Health Pediatrician Chris Wilhelm said there are some things to do and also not do. "Do not make your own formula. I am sure if I google 'homemade infant formula,' I would get a plethora of options to choose from and I venture to say none of those are safe," he said. Due to the current scarcity, Wilhelm said people might be trying to add more water to the formula, which he said should be avoided. "Some people, I know, are trying to get more for their money by doubling the amount of water in the ratio of water to formula," he said. "Basically though, what you are...
With crime skyrocketing and summer just around the corner, should the streets of Baltimore be banned after dark? This morning on WBAL Radio, Baltimore City Police Commissioner Michael Harrison gave his opinion when asked whether a city-wide curfew could help combat crime. "It could. The issue becomes how do we enforce it," Harrison said. Harrison then continued his response with more questions than answers. "Do we have a place to bring the curfew violators? What’s the timeline? How do we track parents down? How long can they stay there," he said. Turns out, even though they’re not enforcing it, Baltimore City has had a juvenile curfew in place for years now. It requires those 13-years-old and under to be indoors after 9 p.m., and those between the ages of 14 to 16 t...
And you shall count for yourselves, from the morrow of the rest day from the day you bring the Omer as a wave offering seven weeks; they shall be complete. (Vayikra 23:15). Nestled amongst the many mitzvos of this week’s parsha is the Omer offering. This was a barley offering, brought on the second day of Pesach which allowed the consumption of chadash (new crop of grain). In addition to the offering, we are commanded to count the days between Pesach and Shavuos. We are to count, seven weeks, forty-nine days, and on the fiftieth day, we celebrate the Yom Tov of Shavuos. This count creates a bridge between Pesach and Shavuos and we are reminded that our emancipation was to enable us to self-actualize through the acceptance of the Torah. There is an interesting halachik debate as to ...

In memory of my exalted older brother ר' שמחה דוד בן ר' משה ע"ה We are introduced this week to the special requirements and obligations associated with that special cadre among our nation known as the family of Kohanim — the descendants of Aharon HaKohen. The very first law enumerated relates to their need to disassociate from any contact with the dead, except for close relatives and an abandoned corpse. Their elevated status to remain untainted from any halachic impurity that might hinder their ability to perform the service in the Temple or be attentive to their unique role, is certainly a primary goal of this restriction. Yet, the Torah not only affords them, but obligates them, to grieve and tend to their closest deceased relatives, tendering to th...
Federal officials this week laid out steps being taken to address the national baby formula shortage, which is escalating in Maryland. The shortage is in large part because of massive Abbott Nutrition recalls of popular Similac, Alimentum and EleCare brands of baby formula. The head of the nonprofit MOMCares — which supplies baby care essentials to Black mothers in Baltimore — is worried about mothers who don't have the option to breastfeed if they can't find baby formula. "We're still working very hard to make sure our mothers are getting what they need," director Ana Rodney said. "And our mothers are keeping us abreast of the things they need and the changes that are happening in their baby's nutrition so that we ...
