As a result of nearly $2.8 million in contributions from the State and County, the program will serve nearly 28,000 children this year. “Every child—everywhere—deserves daily access to fresh, healthy foods,” said County Executive Johnny Olszewski. “We are grateful for the state’s generous contribution to this important program, which along with local funding will ensure our y...
Baltimore City says they have received more than 4,000 applications for the new guaranteed income program. Those chosen will receive a payment of $1,000 per month over 24 months. In total, Jack French, with the Mayor's Office, says the City has received 4,019 applications since applications were accepted on May 2. Applications are no longer accepted. Senate Republicans, joined by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), blocked legislation on Wednesday intended to enshrine abortion protections into law ahead of a possible ruling this summer by a conservative-majority Supreme Court striking down the Roe v. Wade decision.   Democrats fell more than 10 votes short of advancing the legislation, touted as a way to codify Roe v. Wade, which guarantees the right to an abortion, into law. It needed 60 votes to move forward.   The outcome, which was expected, is likely to ramp up emotions after a leaked draft decision last week showed the Supreme Court was ready to take the historic step of overturning its landmark 1973 decision on abortion rights.   Democrats have warned that decision would rip away ...

The Church of England is apologizing for its bad behavior – 800 years ago. The Synod of Oxford, hosted in 1222 by the Catholic Church in England, outlined extensive social and professional restrictions for Jewish citizens. Jews were stuck with a specific monetary tithe to pay and were given a badge marking them as a member of the Jewish faith. "Today’s service is an opportunity to remember, repent and rebuild," Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said on Sunday via social media. Jews also were not allowed to hold certain jobs and public offices. "Let us pray it inspires Christians today to reject contemporary forms of anti-Judaism and antisemitism and to appreciate and receive the gift of our Jewish neighbors," he continued.  The apology was meant as a gesture of go...

Several days of rain are expected leading into the weekend and prompting alerts for coastal flooding as a storm off the East Coast is likely to cause showers through Monday, according to forecasters. The National Weather Service says a "persistent coastal storm" has lingered just offshore for days, and while it is likely to weaken before it makes landfall, it will cause five days of wet weather starting Thursday night. The storm still has some variability, and for much of the storm, rainfall chances hover around 50 percent or higher, forecasters said. Some showers are probable beginning late Thursday night heading into Friday. Intermittent rain is expected to continue for another four days, through Monday evening, the National Weather Service said. A coastal food advisory is ...

When I was in Memphis on a lecture tour, I asked to meet him. They told me that in this city lives one of the last people who met Rav Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook and has stories to tell about him. And so I was privileged to sit opposite Rabbi Nota Greenblatt, 96 years old, an American talmid chacham (Torah scholar), and to hear a firsthand account of his encounters with a true spiritual giant. As a young boy, Rabbi Greenblatt was sickly and his father took him to Rav Kook to receive a blessing. He remembers that the rav stood in tallit and tefillin, looked him in the eyes, and gave him a blessing that he should become a talmid chacham and merit to live a long life. "The second blessing materialized," he smiled, "I hope the first did, too."His face lit up with a special light as he told a...
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Tuesday announced a multimillion-dollar medical aid package to be sent to Ukraine. Medical equipment donated from the Maryland Department of Health includes 485,000 bandages and wound care supplies, and 200 ventilators, including medical ventilators for hospital intensive care units as well as portable ventilator units. Maryland State Police also donated hundreds of pieces of body armor, including tactical vests and shields, Hogan said. “It’s about $5 million worth of aid, and to put that into perspective of what 170 pallets looks like it’s a cargo planes worth,” Karina Mandell, chair of the Baltimore-Odesa Sister City Committee, said. These items “send a loud and clear message to Russia that here in Maryland, we stand on ...
Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them: The appointed seasons of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are My appointed seasons. Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation; you shall do no manner of work; it is a Sabbath unto the Lord in all your dwellings. These are the appointed seasons of the Lord.  - Vayikra 23:1-4 This is not the only time that Torah presents us Shabbat and the moadim in what seems to be the same thought, challenging us to look more closely at the relationship between them.  What is God presenting to us when He juxtaposes Shabbat and the moadim?  Are we to focus on Shabbat and its laws or are we to consider the moadim?  Or, do we embrace Rashi&r...
Inflation rose again in April, continuing a climb that has pushed consumers to the brink and is threatening the economic expansion, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday. The consumer price index, a broad-based measure of prices for goods and services, increased 8.3% from a year ago, higher than the Dow Jones estimate for an 8.1% gain. Removing volatile food and energy prices, so-called core CPI still rose 6.2%, against expectations for a 6% gain. Inflation has been the single biggest threat to a recovery that began early in the pandemic and saw the economy in 2021 stage its biggest single-year growth level since 1984. Rising prices at the pump and in grocery stores have been one problem, but inflation has spread beyond those two areas into housing, auto sales and a host of ...
COVID-19 cases are increasing in our community again, but Baltimore City leaders said the numbers are still considered low. There were outbreaks at some area schools this week. Some students within Baltimore City Schools were pushed to virtual learning Tuesday after dozens of students and staff tested positive for COVID-19. Baltimore City School officials said there was a grade-level outbreak impacting sixth-graders at Roland Park Elementary Middle School. “There’s a certain number of students in that grade who have all come down with COVID within a 14 day period, and there’s a chance that those cases are epidemiologically linked,” said Cleo Hirsch, the Executive Director of the COVID response team for Baltimore City Schools. Hirsch said research shows the spre...
Bill Proposed by U.S. Representative Greg Steube Would Halt or Limit Assistance to Jordan for Violating 1995 Extradition Treaty May 10, 2022 – Just days before Jordan’s King Abdullah II is to meet with President Biden at the White House, the parents of an American teenager murdered in a terrorist attack in Jerusalem are hailing proposed legislation that would hold the government of Jordan accountable for its yearslong refusal to extradite the Hamas terrorist who killed her. U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) recently introduced The Recognition of the 1995 Jordan Extradition Treaty with the U.S. Act to limit U.S. assistance to Jordan until the Kingdom of Jordan recognizes the validity of the 1995 extradition treaty between the two countries. “For almost a decade, ...
A daughter recounts her father’s dramatic cardiac arrest and how he was saved thanks to expert care from first responders and hospital staff. Rechovot - Last Friday night was one of the most harrowing nights that I have ever experienced in my life. It began like any other regular Friday night, I was with my family, we made Kiddush, ate our meal, and played backgammon. After losing a couple of rounds, my father decided to head upstairs to rest, and then complained that he wasn’t feeling well.  At first, it seemed like he was being dramatic about losing a few games, but as his pain continued, it appeared more and more like something was seriously wrong. As soon as my mother called me into the room I understood that my father was suffering a major incident, either a cardiac...
