United Arab List chairman MK Mansour Abbas lauded former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Monday, praising the spending levels for the Arab sector during Netanyahu’s term as premier. Abbas, a member of the coalition government which removed Netanyahu from power, said at a press conference Monday afternoon that under Netanyahu, the Israeli government had spent billions of shekels on the Arab sector. Regarding the current budget, which the government is working to pass before the upcoming deadline in November, Abbas said it too provides ample funding for the Arab sector. “The Arab sector is getting what it deserves.” “Everyone admits – including the previous government, the Likud government admitted that there were screw ups and crises and failures vis-&agr...
Speaking at a party meeting on Monday, Foreign Minister and Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid assured his fellow party members that the state budget, which must be passed within the next few weeks if the government is to survive, will pass. “I want to cut through all the chaff right now and get down to the main issue,” Lapid said. “The budget is going to pass. The coalition is functioning. Most of the sticking points that remain are due to our insistence on dealing with problems that were pushed to the back burner over the last ten years,” he added. “Just take a look at what happened yesterday in the Knesset,” Lapid continued. “We’re dealing with Arab society. We’re dealing with the climate crisis. We’re dealing with Holocaust survi...
The Tel Aviv Family Court ruled today (Monday) that six-year-old Eitan Biran, who lost his family in a cable car crash in Italy, will return to live with his family in Italy. Judge Iris Ilotovich-Segal did not accept the claim of Eitan's grandfather, Shmuel Peleg, who allegedly abducted the child to Israel, because Israel was Eitan's place of residence. The court also ruled that Peleg's claim that the boy's aunt Aya had no custody rights was incorrect. According to the ruling, Peleg violated her custody rights by bringing Eitan to Israel. "The court did not accept the grandfather's claim that Israel was the minor's regular residence, nor the claim that the minor had two regular residences - Israel and Italy. The minor, a six-year-old boy, moved with his ent...
'The military benefit was not equivalent to the political and image damage [to Israel]' A former Israeli general said on Sunday that Israel’s bombing of a building in the Gaza Strip that housed The Associated Press (AP) bureau in May was an “own goal.” Maj. Gen. (res.) Nitzan Alon suggested that the incident caused more damage to Israel’s image than it provided strategic benefit, The Times of Israel (ToI) reported. “Bringing down the tower with the AP offices was equivalent to a self-inflicted ‘public relations terror attack’ and an own goal, in our view,” he said. Alon, who conducted one of the IDF probes into the May operation, spoke at an Institute for National Security Studies conference. "The military benefit w...
Facebook’s shareholders would look for different leadership than that of its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg if they could, whistleblower Frances Haugen told The Observer over the weekend. “I believe in shareholder rights and the shareholders, or shareholders minus Mark, have been asking for years for one share, one vote,” Haugen said. “And the reason for that is, I am pretty sure the shareholders would choose other leadership if they had an option.” Haugen said  Zuckerberg has failed to show he can protect the public from the negative effects of his company, stressing that “he has all the control. He has no oversight and he has not demonstrated that he is willing to govern that company at the level that is necessary for public safe...
'Some of them had bloodstains... I couldn't believe my eyes,' a victim of the scheme said While demand for medical supplies skyrockets during the Covid pandemic, so does the potential for fraud, leading to a surge in used counterfeit gloves from Thailand. Tens of millions of used surgical gloves, dyed blue and repackaged as new, found their way into the United States as part of a massive medical equipment fraud scheme, a CNN investigation detailed on Sunday. US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorities received a tip from a businessman who ordered from Thailand-based company Paddy the Room after he discovered the quality of the gloves. Tarek Kirschen ordered a $2 million shipment for distribution in 2020 but was quickly alerted to the scam when his clien...
Biden met with a key bill opponent, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, to negotiate After months of fierce political wrangling, United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday she expects agreement on a huge social spending package and a vote on a cross-party infrastructure bill this week. Asked on CNN's "State of the Union" whether the agreement on the spending package and votes on infrastructure could occur in the coming week, Pelosi replied, "that's the plan." And on the spending package specifically, which has divided progressive and moderate Democrats, she sounded particularly optimistic. "I think we're pretty much there now," she said. "We're almost there. It's just the language of it."
U.S. officials are issuing new warnings about China’s ambitions in artificial intelligence and a range of advanced technologies that could eventually give Beijing a decisive military edge and possible dominance over healthcare and other essential sectors in America. The warnings include a renewed effort to inform business executives, academics, and local and state government officials about the risks of accepting Chinese investment or expertise in key industries, officials at the National Counterintelligence and Security Center said Thursday. While the center does not intend to tell officials to reject Chinese investment, it will encourage efforts to control intellectual property and implement security measures. National security agencies under President Joe Biden’s administr...
President Joe Biden said that the United States would “unfortunately” not release the public records regarding President John F. Kennedy’s assassination because the COVID-19 pandemic has caused delays at the agencies responsible for organizing the records. The decision was signed off by Biden in a memo and released by the White House on Friday. “Temporary continued postponement is necessary to protect against identifiable harm to the military defense, intelligence operations, law enforcement, or the conduct of foreign relations that is of such gravity that it outweighs the public interest in immediate disclosure,” the memo states.
Walmart has recalled an aromatherapy spray after it identified a bacteria in the product that has now been linked to four illnesses and two deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday that it had identified the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei in the aromatherapy spray. The spray, “Better Homes & Gardens Lavender & Chamomile Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones,” was found Oct. 6 in the home of a Georgia resident who became ill with melioidosis in late July, according to the CDC. The CDC said it will continue to test the bacteria in the bottle to potentially match the bacteria identified in the four patients. The symptoms of melioidosis are similar to that of a cold or flu, according to the CDC.
Positive developments unexpectedly occurred in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian organization Hamas, sources revealed on Friday, towards reaching a prisoner exchange agreement. Sources told Rai al-Youm, an Arab world digital news website, that Egypt has “accomplished many points related to the prisoner swap deal, which may be announced within a few weeks,” The Jerusalem Post (The Post) reported. The sources disclosed that there are “official and clear guarantees from Hamas and Israel that comply with the broad outlines of the deal.” “There are understandings on many points, and Cairo has completed more than 70% of the deal,” they added. “The rest may be related to the details of time, place, guarantees, and other lo...
The State Department on Friday conceded that there are significantly more Americans in Afghanistan than previously estimated — leading to Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and other Republicans to accuse the administration of a “betrayal” of Americans abroad. State Department officials briefed congressional staff this week and told them that it is in touch with 363 Americans in Afghanistan and nearly 176 legal permanent residents, a congressional source who was on the call told Fox News. That 363 number is significantly higher than previous estimates by the Biden administration, which had put the number at around 100 in September — and is only the number with whom the State Dept. is in contact.
These criminals better not let the tree-huggers catch them. Sawzall-wielding thieves hacking away at parked cars sent thefts of a key pollution-cleaning part through the roof in the past year. Through Oct. 10, 2,170 catalytic converters were reported stolen in the five boroughs, more than four times the 501 ripped off through the same date in 2020, the NYPD said. “The whole process takes under two minutes,” Detective Thomas Kelly of the Auto Crimes Unit told The Post. Catalytic converters, part of a car’s exhaust system, break down some of the smog that would otherwise come out the tailpipe.
President Joe Biden decamped to Wilmington on Friday, escaping the White House he’s likened to a “gilded cage” for a weekend at his Delaware home. It’s yet another weekend away from Washington as the President has spent a noteworthy portion of his first year in office at one of his two Delaware homes or at Camp David, working remotely. A CNN analysis of Biden’s public schedule indicates the President has spent a significant amount of time away from the White House, particularly on weekends, since his January inauguration. Including this weekend’s trip to Delaware, Biden has taken 35 personal trips and spent all or part of 108 of his first 276 days in office at one of his Delaware homes or at Camp David in Maryland. That...
The body of Martin Davidovich, the man named by the Israel Defense Forces as the nation’s first fallen paratrooper, is set to be brought to Israel next week for burial, 73 years after his death in a training accident in Czechoslovakia. A delegation from the Defense Ministry and the IDF will travel to Prague on Sunday to retrieve his remains before bringing them back to Israel for internment. Davidovich was born in 1927 in Częstochowa in Czechoslovakia. He was active in the Hashomer Hatzair youth movement, until World War II when he was sent to Auschwitz in April 1944 and then to the Mauthausen concentration camp. Many of his family members were killed in the Holocaust. After the end of the war, Davidovich returned to Czechoslovakia and joined the Czech Brigade, a military unit e...
To keep the taps at his recently opened beer tasting room flowing, Peter Chekijian had no choice but to ask his main employees to come in seven days per-week. The staffing shortage has also kept Chekijian from realizing his goal of brewing beer on site, since he can’t find contractors to finish installing tanks he requires. “That’s been a big issue of getting people to actually finish up the job,” said Chekijian, who co-founded the small Twin Fork Beer Company in New York state. Even as millions of Americans who lost their jobs to the Covid-19 pandemic have returned to work, companies nationwide report they’re still struggling to hire employees in recent months. More than 10 million jobs were unfilled as of the end of August, according to government data. ...
Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Joe Manchin were continuing talks with President Joe Biden in Delaware on Sunday as Democrats scrambled to reach agreement on social spending legislation, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters. The person did not give more details or say whether they were closer to agreeing on a framework of $2 trillion or less that will allow the House of Representatives to move forward next week on a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill and set the stage for passage of Biden’s larger “Build Back Better” social package. A deal within reach, Biden and Democrats seemed to edge closer to sealing their giant domestic legislation, though the informal deadline appeared to slip as they worked to scale back the measure and determine how to p...
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Sunday that the United States was not losing control of inflation, and that she expected inflation levels to return to normal by the second half of next year. Yellen, in an interview on CNN, said spending in President Joe Biden’s domestic infrastructure and Build Back Better packages would be allocated over the next 10 years, but she did not say whether that would exacerbate inflation. “I don’t think we’re about to lose control of inflation,” Yellen said. “On a 12-month basis, the inflation rate will remain high into next year because of what’s already happened. But I expect improvement by the middle to end of next year – second half of next year,” Yellen said.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is sounding the alarm that inflation in the United States is about to “change everything.” In a tweet Friday, Dorsey warned the worst is yet to come. “Hyperinflation is going to change everything. It’s happening,” he wrote. Hyperinflation is when inflation — the increasing price of goods and services — rises uncontrollably for a period of time, triggered by an event that unexpectedly leads to a sudden increase or decrease in the supply of goods or services. Dorsey’s warning comes after consumer price inflation rebounded in the wake of new disruptions to the supply chain that are triggering continued rising prices. The Consumer Price Index, which measures a broad basket of consumer goods prices, incr...
