The budget that will fund the Israeli project to build the attack capabilities will consist of NIS 3 billion in the current state budget and another NIS 2 billion in the next budget. “I think we ceased to understand that complexity is a good thing, and that if we cannot listen to and appreciate even people who are different from us, we are one short step from the destruction of our shared house.” “Technological progress, which is reaching new heights every day, has many advantages, which are transforming our lives from end to end. But unfortunately, it has also become an available and hugely influential tool for the dissemination of incitement and hatred with intolerable ease.” “To the leaders of this country, to its public opinion leaders and its citizens, I implore you from this mountain: in this situation, especially in this situation, raise a voice of moderation, of reconciliation, of outreach, of mutual respect! Empower what we have...
A vaccine mandate for Baltimore city employees is taking effect today. The policy includes probationary, contractual, seasonal, part-time and temporary employees, as well as police and firefighters. Police have been pushing back against the mandate. They want it included in their collective bargaining with the city. Employees who are not fully vaccinated by today will have to show a negative test every week to continue reporting to work at their city jobs. Mayor Brandon Scott announced the vaccination mandate for city employees on Aug. 31. "Protecting the health of our workforce, residents, and their loved ones is my top priority. As we continue to navigate this pandemic — all while working to restore critical in-person access and assistance for Baltimoreans — the steps...
Seeking to curb the social injustice phenomenon known as “driving while Black,” Philadelphia has passed legislation the mayor is expected to sign that will bar police from making minor traffic stops. Once Democrat Mayor Jim Kenney signs the law it would take effect in 120 days, restricting police from stops for busted tail lights and expired inspections, the first major U.S. city to do so, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Activists have considered those traffic infractions as disproportionately exposing Blacks to traffic stops, leading to the Philadelphia City Council to pass the Driving Equality Bill 14-2 to curb “unequal police practices” against minorities. Blacks individuals, who represent 43% of the population, have accounted for 72% of sto...
President Joe Biden is entering a crucial two weeks for his ambitious agenda, racing to conclude contentious congressional negotiations ahead of both domestic deadlines and a chance to showcase his administration’s accomplishments on a global stage. Biden and his fellow Democrats are struggling to bridge intraparty divides by month’s end to pass a bipartisan infrastructure bill and a larger social services package. The president hopes to nail down both before Air Force lifts off for Europe on Oct. 28 for a pair of world leader summits, including the most ambitious climate change meeting in years. But that goal has been jeopardized by fractures among Democrats, imperiling the fate of promised sweeping new efforts to grapple with climate change. There’s also rising anxiet...

As his Bar Mitzvah approaches, our son Natanel began putting on tefillin yesterday amidst great excitement. My father-in-law, Rabbi Eliav Meir, told us that he had helped his 95-year-old Jerusalem neighbor put on tefillin that very same morning since he can no longer do it by himself, without assistance. From there he came to us, to help his grandson who will soon be thirteen put on tefillin because he cannot yet do this on his own, without assistance. And actually, my father-in-law said, the tefillin of an old man and the tefillin of a boy carry the same message:"When a Jew of any age or condition begins his day with tefillin, he takes the two most important forces in life and points them in the right direction. The arm symbolizes our activity in the world while the head symbolizes our tho...
Israel does not want war with Hezbollah, but is prepared to face about 2,000 rockets a day from the terror group if conflict breaks out, a senior Israeli military official told AFP. During the 11-day May conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian terror groups fired around 4,400 projectiles towards the Jewish state. The Iron Dome air defense system intercepted around 90 percent of the rockets headed for populated areas, while just under 300 hit inhabited districts. Cities like Tel Aviv and Ashdod experienced the “highest number of fire towards them in the history of Israel,” said Uri Gordin, chief of the army’s Home Front Command. “We saw a pace of more than 400 rockets fired towards Israel on a daily basis.” Gordin said that in the ca...

The Baltimore City police union is telling its officers to not disclose their COVID-19 vaccination status. Baltimore City's mandate requiring all city employees get vaccinated takes effect Monday. In a letter sent Friday to officers, FOP3 President Mike Mancuso said it's trying to delay that policy until the city reaches a bargaining agreement with the FOP. Until then, the union says officers should not do anything to reveal whether they're vaccinated. The mayor's communication director Cal Harris spoke about the concerns over the vaccination mandate as they wait a decision. “Labor Commissioner Deborah Moore-Carter led a productive meeting Friday afternoon with the Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police and their attorney, Commissioner Michael Harrison,...
Unless something changes dramatically in the near future, Iran will soon become a nuclear threat. Although it may not have a nuclear bomb immediately, it will have the capacity to produce one, the moment it decides to. Meanwhile, in the past few months Iran has made significant progress towards achieving nuclear capacity, and now has over 120 kilograms of uranium enriched to 20%. It is estimated that if no one intervenes, within a few weeks, Iran will have enough enriched uranium to produce one nuclear bomb. The raw materials are not enough, however, and Iran will need to continue developing its reactor, as well as conduct experiments and complete the long-range missile project so that it can launch its nuclear warheads. According to Israel Hayom, if the status quo continu...
Foreign Affairs Minister Yair Lapid returned to Israel this weekend from his visit to the United States. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett opposes the reopening. Lapid clarified in his meeting with United States Secretary of State Blinken: "The move could dismantle the government." "We do not have anything to add at the moment, but the process is ongoing." "Th...

QR code scanning an effort to prevent the use of fake certificates in order to gain entry to facilities Israel on Sunday began requiring the QR code of the Green Pass to be scanned before holders of the digital certificate will be allowed entry into facilities that must comply with the government program to contain the coronavirus. The QR code enforcement comes after technical problems slowed down implementation of the updated Green Pass that includes verification of all three vaccine doses available to the Israeli public. According to the new rules, the QR code must be scanned by a Health Ministry app that compares the Green Pass information to the ID on file in order to prevent the use of fake certificates. Those who have not been vaccinated or who have not recovered from...

The man known as the last Jew of Kabul could soon be heading to Israel, after agreeing to grant his estranged wife a 'get' in a Zoom call — a precondition for smooth entry to the Holy Land. Zebulon Simentov, who fled Afghanistan last month after the Taliban takeover, landed Sunday in Turkey on what his rescuers say is a final stop before traveling to Israel, perhaps as soon as this week. It caps a weekslong odyssey that included an escape from his homeland as well as a videoconference divorce procedure meant to ensure he will not run into trouble with Israeli authorities. Under Jewish religious law, a husband must agree to grant his wife a divorce, something he had refused to do for many years. Facing the prospect of legal action in Israel, where his ex-wife lives, Simen...
