California voters soundly rejected an attempt to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Tuesday in a historic rebuke that amounted to a ratification of Newsom’s aggressive approach to combating the coronavirus pandemic. With 59 percent of the vote tallied in an election conducted almost entirely through the mail, just 33 percent of voters supported recalling Newsom; The Associated Press projected the recall would fail. "I want to focus on what we said yes to as a state," Newsom said in remarks after the election results were called. "We said yes to science. We said yes to vaccines. We said yes to ending this pandemic. We said yes to people’s right to vote without fear of fake fraud or voter suppression." "I’m humbled and grateful to the millions and millions of Cali...

Entry to Israel for students after Sukkos has been arranged. In August, prior to the new school year, the Igud, led by Rabbi Nechemya Malinowitz, arranged a detailed process for the entry of yeshiva and seminary students into Israel. Several weeks after the school year commenced, this program was suspended. Now, Chaim V’Chessed has learned that this process will be reinstated for a small window of time, to allow new students to commence studies immediately after Sukkos. Yeshivas and seminaries will submit details of their students to the Igud, between September 29 and October 13, 2021. These students will receive an entry permit and a student visa which will be valid until March 31, 2022.  Prior to March, they will be required to apply for a full ...
A federal judge temporarily blocked the state of New York on Tuesday from forcing medical workers to be vaccinated after a group of health care workers sued, saying their Constitutional rights were violated because the state’s mandate disallowed religious exemptions. Judge David Hurd in Utica issued the order after 17 health professionals, including doctors and nurses, claimed in a lawsuit Monday that their rights were violated with a vaccine mandate that disallowed the exemptions. The judge gave New York state until Sept. 22 to respond to the lawsuit in federal court in Utica. If the state opposes the plaintiffs’ request for a preliminary court order blocking the vaccine mandate, a Sept. 28 oral hearing will occur. The state issued the order Aug. 28, requiring at least a fi...
On the holiest day of the year-on Yom Kippur- we step back. Suppressing our routine, discarding food, and diminishing our sleep, we liberate our imagination to contemplate life, identity and future. Yom Kippur is a day of withdrawal, of religious awakening, spiritual cleansing and recoupling with G-d. Teshuva is timeless, stretching back to the beginning of history, when Man first sinned and was first accorded forgiveness by a merciful Creator. On this day of eternity, we join the generations of fallen humans who looked up to Heaven for redemption and for rebirth.  Though teshuva is timeless, it must be animated by the fluctuations of life.  Each year must provoke a different variety of teshuva based upon our current experiences. So much has transpired over the past two years. H...
Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley moved to limit former President Trump's ability to call for a military strike or launch nuclear weapons days after the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riot according to "Peril," an upcoming book about the end of Trump's presidency written by veteran journalist Bob Woodward and The Washington Post's Robert Costa. Woodward and Costa wrote in their new book that Milley was worried that Trump might "go rogue," according to CNN. According to the two journalists, Milley "was certain that Trump had gone into a serious mental decline in the aftermath of the election, with Trump now all but manic, screaming at officials and constructing his own alternate reality about endless election conspiracies." Due to this perceived "decli...
Alta Fixsler was born in England with severe brain damage, and judges in England have ruled that she must be taken off life support. This is against the wishes of her parents and against the halachic guidance they have received from their rabbonim. World-renowned pediatric neurologists who have studied her records say that the injury she has suffered makes it near-impossible for her to feel any pain. Both Israel and the United States are ready and willing to accommodate her needs in a hospital in their respective countries. Yet the judges in England refuse to release her instead ruling that she must be taken off life support. Please join us this Yom Kippur in davening for Alta bas Alta Chaya b'soch she'ar cholei Yisroel.

One of the most moving tunes we sing in these Days of Awe, is set to the words we recite daily in Selichos. מכניסי רחמים הכניסו רחמינו לפני בעל הרחמים — Those who usher in mercy, shall bring our pleas for compassion, before the Lord of mercy. Who are these conveyers of mercy that we request their assistance in arousing G-d’s compassion in judgment? Are these angels? Can one enlist angels to intercede on our behalf by simply asking them to? In the Haftorah we read on Shabbos Shuva, we conclude with a series of verses from the book of Michah that present thirteen attributes of Hashem, that the Zohar reveals mirrors the Yud-Gimel Middos — the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy that were revealed to Moshe by G-d, after the sin of Golden Calf...
The Federal Election Commission dismissed a complaint from Republicans that Twitter illegally blocked a 2020 New York Post story on Hunter Biden, ruling the social media company had a commercial — not political — reason for the action, the New York Times reported. The ruling was made last month behind closed doors and is set to become public soon, the Times reported. Blocking of the Hunter Biden article triggered widespread criticism last October, and prompted accusations that Twitter was improperly helping Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. The Republican National Committee argued Twitter’s actions amounted to an “illegal in-kind contribution” to the campaign, the Times noted. But the FEC stated Twitter had “credibly explained” ...
During a trip to Boise, Idaho, on Monday for a briefing on wildfires with federal and state officials, President Joe Biden’s feed was abruptly cut by the White House. Biden said during the briefing he wanted to hear more from George Geissler of the National Association of State Foresters. Biden asked Geissler if he could ask him a question, and Geissler replied “of course.” Biden then said, “One of the things that I’ve been working on with some others is —,” before his feed was cut. It was then replaced by a full-screen graphic saying, “Thank you for watching.” Biden’s feed has been cut by the White House before. Last month, it happened when Biden was about to respond to a reporter’s question concerning the mili...
A COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 may be available by the end of the year, said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ”We’re waiting for the companies to submit the data to the FDA. We’re anticipating that will happen in the fall,” Walensky said Monday on NBC’s “Today” show. “We will look at that data from the FDA, from the CDC, with the urgency that we all feel for getting our kids vaccinated, and we’re hoping by the end of the year,” she said. Asked about parents who are frustrated about not yet being able to have their young children vaccinated, especially as the more dangerous delta variant has spread throughout the country, Walensky said:&n...
Rep. Michael McCaul, the ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the Taliban has already started to execute some of the 10,000 interpreters who worked with the U.S. in Afghanistan. The Texas Republican’s comments came during an interview on CNN’s "The Situation Room" on Monday.  "The interpreters, who worked with our Special Forces, they are gone. The Taliban will not allow them to leave," he said. "These are the guys who worked right with our special forces. The Taliban views them as the worst of the worse because they betrayed, in their view, their country and they worked with the infidel." McCaul estimated there are about 10,000 interpreters still in Afghanistan. He noted that when you take into consideration the families involved, ...

Anne Arundel Medical Center has started putting off some non-emergency, elective surgeries until COVID-19 admissions start to decline. COVID-19 patients are currently occupying about 10% of all the hospital beds at AAMC, and more than 70% of them are unvaccinated. "This was a very difficult decision. This was a multi-disciplinary decision made over a period of time where we were watching our numbers," said Dr. Stephen Selinger, the hospital's chief medical officer. Maryland hospitals haven't taken such action since March 2020. The hospital cited September's delta variant-fueled COVID-19 case surge and an increase in emergency room visits. It's a combination that is straining capacity, Selinger said. "In order to be able to accommodate those emergency patients, those...
