Shontel Brown, a Cuyahoga County councilwoman, came from behind in the polls to win a critical Democratic primary in a Cleveland area district with a substantial Jewish population, with considerable help from a mainstream pro-Israel political action committee. Dave Wasserman, the political editor of the Cook Political Report, on Tuesday evening called the election in Ohio’s 11th District for Brown, who was facing Nina Turner, a former state senator who co-chaired the 2020 presidential run of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the flag-bearer for the party’s left. The AP also called the race for Brown. Turner, who once enjoyed a 35-point advantage over Brown, saw her lead rapidly shrink in recent days and ended up being overhauled by Brown in a crowded field of 13 candidates vy...

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson announced Tuesday that he made good on his promise to pardon a couple who gained notoriety for pointing guns at social justice demonstrators as they marched past the couple’s home in a luxury St. Louis enclave last year. Parson, a Republican, on Friday pardoned Mark McCloskey, who pleaded guilty in June to misdemeanor fourth-degree assault and was fined $750, and Patricia McCloskey, who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassment and was fined $2,000. “Mark McCloskey has publicly stated that if he were involved in the same situation, he would have the exact same conduct,” the McCloskeys’ lawyer Joel Schwartz said Tuesday. “He believes that the pardon vindicates that conduct.” The McCloskeys, both lawyers in their 60s, ...

U.S. private sector job growth slowed sharply in July amid an uptick in new COVID-19 infections.  The U.S. economy added 330,000 private sector jobs last month, a decline from the downwardly revised 680,000 jobs gained in June, according to the ADP National Employment Report released Wednesday. Analysts surveyed by Refinitiv were expecting the addition of 695,000 jobs.  "The labor market recovery continues to exhibit uneven progress, but progress nonetheless," said Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP. "Bottlenecks in hiring continue to hold back stronger gains, particularly in light of new COVID-19 concerns tied to viral variants."  The service sector added 318,000 jobs last month. Within services, the leisure and hospitality sector continued to pa...

Leaders in Portland, Ore., are looking to combat the city’s rising homicide rate by resurrecting a police unit focused on gun violence. But after a year of growing tension within the department, they can’t find enough officers to join. Since 14 job openings were announced in May, only four police personnel have applied to work with the new version of Portland’s Gun Violence Reduction Team, which was shut down last year amid long-running protests seeking racial justice and an overhaul of police practices. None have yet been assigned. Portland officers say such positions, once considered prestigious, are now less desirable, given the increased scrutiny that accompanies them. The new unit has its own citizen-advisory board, instituted after the old unit was cri...
The divorce between Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates was finalized on Monday, according to court documents first reported by Reuters. The pair, who founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, announced in early May that they were splitting up after 27 years of marriage. They said at the time that they would continue to work together at the foundation, but concluded that they can no longer “grow together as a couple.” The details of their divorce agreement have not been made public and, according to Reuters, were not disclosed Monday in the final order filed in King County Superior Court in Seattle.
A majority of voters say they believe the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol is biased, according to a new Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey. Fifty-eight percent of voters polled said they believed the committee set up by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was biased, while 42 percent said they thought it was fair. “Americans want an examination of the riots over the summer and the origins of the virus over investigating Jan. 6th,” said  Mark Penn, the co-director of the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey. “The voters reject the Pelosi move to toss Republicans off of the committee and see it now as just a partisan exercise.”
Several prominent members of the Democratic Party have come under fire from conservatives for reportedly attending large functions without wearing masks, according to the Washington Examiner. Just hours after imposing an indoors face mask mandate amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser was photographed violating her own mask mandate at a wedding reception. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is also under fire over the annual Lollapalooza music festival that took place in the city over the weekend. During a speech addressing the crowd, Lightfoot praised the attendees, saying 90% of them showed proof of vaccination before entering the event, with another 8% showing negative tests for COVID-19. Just before the festival, the mayor warned that a...
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei inaugurated the country’s new ultra-conservative President Ebrahim Raisi Tuesday, as the Islamic Republic enters a crucial phase with prolonged domestic protests against the regime. In addition, the delicate negotiations between Tehran and the six world powers regarding the country’s atomic ambitions are likely to shortly restart, as there was a hiatus following the end of the last round of negotiations in Vienna; following which Iran announced that there would be no further talks until Raisi’s investiture. “Following the people’s choice, I task the wise, indefatigable, experienced and popular Hojatoleslam Ebrahim Raisi as president of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Khamenei wrote in a decree read out ...
Hidden inside the 2022 budget approved by the Bennett-Lapid government Monday morning after lengthy discussions is a clause which for the first time grants significant funds to anti-religious reform elements. Makor Rishon reporter Tzvika Klein wrote on Twitter that “the Progressive Judaism section in the Diaspora ministry will receive 40 million NIS in an attempt to counter the section for Jewish Culture which is ruled by religious Zionist elements. It is important to note that the new section will invest in activities in Israel and not in the Diaspora. This is a bad news for those opposed to Reform Judaism in Israel.” Shas leader Aryeh Deri responded on his Twitter account, stating that “this is a sad moment for those who cherish the Jewish identity of the state. These ...
Air travel in the U.S. is hitting new pandemic-era highs, and airlines are scrambling to keep up with the summer-vacation crowds. Despite rising numbers of coronavirus infections fueled by the delta variant, the U.S. set another recent high mark for air travel Sunday, with more than 2.2 million people going through airport checkpoints, according to the Transportation Security Administration. That is nearly 11,000 more people screened than July 18, and the highest number since Feb. 28, 2020, before the U.S. felt the full brunt of the pandemic. However, air travel was still down 17% Sunday from the same Sunday in 2019. The resurgence of leisure travel, coupled with some bad weather, has led to delays and flight cancellations at airlines struggling to ramp up after being crushed by the pan...
Republican governor said ice cream maker's parent company has 90 days to reverse its position The fallout from Ben & Jerry's recent decision to stop permitting the sale of its ice cream products in the disputed West Bank continued Tuesday, as Florida threatened not to put any money into parent company Unilever unless it reversed its decision. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis said the State Board of Administration added London-based Unilever to its list of “scrutinized companies” that boycott Israel, reported the Associated Press (AP). DeSantis' action means that Ben & Jerry's has 90 days to reverse its position on Israel, otherwise the state will not invest in or contract with Unilever or its subsidiaries. “As a matter of law and prin...
Thousands of Spirit Airlines customers were left stranded on Sunday and Monday after the budget air carrier canceled hundreds of flights, according to reports. The Florida-based airline nixed 165 flights on Sunday and delayed another 341, according to FlightAware.com. Another 277 flights had been canceled as of 5:30 p.m. on Monday — 36 percent of scheduled Spirit trips, the site said. Hundreds more flights have been delayed, according to reports. Photos on social media from across the country showed would-be flyers waiting in long lines to retrieve their luggage. “It looked like a hurricane shelter,” passenger Rebecca Osborn, who was at Orlando International Airport, told USA Today.
A drone struck a skyscraper in the World Trade Center complex and became lodged on the building’s facade Monday afternoon, landing the operator in custody, law-enforcement sources told The Post. The gizmo crashed into 7 World Trade Center around 5 p.m. and ended up wedged between window panels outside the third floor of the 52-story Lower Manhattan building, sources said. Workers attempted to remove it Monday afternoon. The drone’s pilot, who is from Texas, was taken into custody by the Port Authority Police Department, sources said.
An attorney for former President Trump says he will fight to block the release of his tax returns days after the Department of Justice ordered them turned over to the Democratic-led House Ways and Means Committee. “There is no evidence of any wrongdoing here and I object to the release of the returns not only on behalf of my client but on behalf of all future holders of the office of the president of the United States,” Ronald Fischetti, a lawyer for Trump, told The Wall Street Journal. In a memo from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, acting Assistant Attorney General Dawn Johnsen on Friday said the Treasury Department is required to defer to the congressional committee.
