Dr. Anthony Fauci says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are weighing revising their COVID-19 guidelines to recommend that even fully vaccinated individuals wear masks in public.
Fauci, the nation’s top government infectious disease official, told CNN’s “State of the Union” TV show that he’s taken part in conversations about altering the guidelines, something he described as being “under active consideration.”
He noted that some local areas where infection rates are surging are already urging individuals to wear masks in public regardless of their vaccination status. Fauci said those local rules are not incompatible with the CDC’s recommendation that the vaccinated don’t need to wear masks in public.

Americans are growing more negative about the track the country is on, according to a new poll.
More than half of those surveyed in the ABC News/Ipsos poll published Sunday, or 55 percent, said they are pessimistic about the direction of the country. In May, 36 percent indicated the same thing.
Forty-five percent of respondents now report feeling optimistic about the way things are going in the United States. Almost two in three – 64 percent — agreed in the May survey, however.
Optimism is currently down about 20 points among Democrats and Republicans, pollsters found, and down 26 points among independents.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said Friday that he would not ”rule out” removing Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., from the influential Armed Services Committee in the latest backlash over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., vetoing two GOP members from the Select Committee on the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot.
”I think it’s a conference decision,” McCarthy said during his Friday press conference. ”The conference will look at it.”
Cheney is the only Republican Pelosi named to her select committee to investigate the riot at the federal building that killed five people including Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick and civilian Ashli Babbitt, who was shot by a different, unidentified Capitol Police officer.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Friday asked why reporters needed to know how many vaccinated White House staffers had contracted COVID-19.
”Why do you need to have that information?” she asked a reporter who pressed her for the answer.
”Transparency, interests of the public, to have a better understanding of how breakthrough cases work here in the White House,” the reporter replied.
Psaki then informed the reporter that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was responsible for ”a great deal of tracking” before moving on.

Fortunately, the actual ramifications of this boycott are limited, or even negligible. As Israel's economic influence continues to grow, the world is increasingly dependent upon Israeli high tech, medical technology, water management and cyber security. Team USA Olympic swimmer Chase Kalisz secured the first United States gold medal in the Tokyo 2020 Games on Sunday.
Kalisz, a two-time Olympian and a graduate of the University of Georgia, completed the men’s 400 individual medley in 4 minutes and 9.42 seconds, besting his teammate Jay Litherland, who finished 0.86 seconds later. Litherland secured a silver medal, while Kieran Smith of Australia finished third.
In the women’s version of the event, U.S. swimmer Emma Weyant won silver, while her teammate Hali Flickinger took bronze. Japanese swimmer Yui Ohashi won the race.

Seven Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats demanded the FBI explain its use of a novel tip line implemented during a supplemental background investigation into then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in 2018.
In a Tuesday letter to Director Chris Wray, Democratic senators accused the FBI of being “politically constrained by the Trump White House,” demanding to know what extent the agency vetted tips and whether the administration prevented it from doing so.
The letter was written by Sens. Dick Durbin, Patrick Leahy, Chris Coons, Cory Booker, Mazie Hirono, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Richard Blumenthal.

Biden administration health officials increasingly think that vulnerable populations will need booster shots even as research continues into how long the coronavirus vaccines remain effective.
Senior officials now say they expect that people who are 65 and older or who have compromised immune systems will most likely need a third shot from Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, two vaccines based on the same technology that have been used to inoculate the vast majority of Americans thus far. The military draft could be rewritten to require women to sign up for the Selective Service System, according to a policy draft written by Senate Armed Services Chair Jack Reed, D-R.I., Politico reports.
Politico notes that Reed’s proposal, which would expand the service’s registration to “All Americans,” could be added to the “must-pass” National Defense Authorization Act that’s currently being worked on in Congress, though this could spark a debate between Republicans and Democrats over the issue. A spokesperson for the senator declined to comment to Politico.
A congressional commission recommended last March that women should be made eligible for the draft following a multi-year study into the issue.

Rep. Eric Swalwell’s congressional campaign spent thousands of dollars on alcohol and limousine services, newly released campaign expenditures show.
The Swalwell for Congress committee spent $4,051.32 at AA Limo Service LLC between April 6 and May 27 and $5,058.32 at two wineries and one brewery, according to financial disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission.
The campaign also spent $21,160.75 at the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, where Swalwell’s wife, Brittany Watts, worked as director of sales.
It is unclear whether Watts is still employed at the resort.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday formally named Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger to serve on a select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Kinzinger, Pelosi said in a statement, “brings great patriotism to the committee’s mission: to find the facts and protect our democracy.”
It was unclear whether she would name additional Republicans. Earlier in the day, Pelosi was interviewed on ABC’s “This Week” and said that other Republicans also had expressed interest in working on the panel.

The fast-spreading delta variant of the novel coronavirus has been gaining traction worldwide since it was first detected in India, and now researchers may have an idea of why: Its viral load is 1,000 times higher than the original strain of the virus.
The delta variant is a mutated version of the novel coronavirus that spreads more easily than other strains. It now accounts for an estimated 83% of COVID-19 cases in the United States as it continues to surge largely among unvaccinated populations, officials said.
Viruses constantly mutate, and most changes aren’t concerning. But there is a worry that some variants might evolve enough to be more contagious, cause more severe illness or evade the protection that vaccines provide.
