Lt.-Col. G. expected to lead Military Intelligence Directorate’s artificial intelligence revolution The Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) Military Intelligence Directorate (MID) appointed the first-ever female deputy chief of Unit 8200, the directorate’s main information gathering unit, reported the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS). G - who will be promoted to a full colonel on the assumption of her duties - has wide-ranging experience within the unit, having performed a variety of roles in the directorate’s cyber, intelligence and operations divisions. “I have been privileged to serve in Unit 8200, whose mission is to maintain Israel’s security,” said G. “Along with members of Unit 8200 and MID, I will lead the issue ...
In the battle against cyber attacks 'united we stand, divided we fall,' PM says Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett called for the establishment of a “global cybernet shield” to combat the growing spread of cyber-attacks affecting individuals, companies and nations. In a speech at Tel Aviv University’s Cyber Week, Bennett – displaying the airs of the tech CEO that he once was – suggested that Israel was uniquely placed to lead the establishment of such a program.  As a nation that understands it must defend itself, Israel was one of the first in the world to establish a single national cyber agency, “responsible for defending all critical infrastructure,” Bennet said.  Critically, as well as defending state asset...
The delta variant of the COVID-19 virus is spreading like wildfire in certain areas of the country. Maryland is faring better, but there are also two other strains doctors are watching closely. Maryland has recorded less than 100 cases of the delta variant as of last week, but the number of COVID-19 cases has gone up over the last two weeks. "The delta variant seems to be the most commonly isolated virus from many of the samples right now," said Dr. Andy Pekosz, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. And cases are on the rise across the United States, especially in areas with a large population of unvaccinated people. However, in Maryland, the state health department reports 90 cases of the delta strain as of July 12. But Pekosz calls it the most threatening strain of...
It's been more than six months since the National Guard was deployed to the U.S. Capitol during the January insurrection, and officials of the Maryland National Guard say the federal government has not reimbursed them for the costs of keeping thousands of national guard soldiers in Washington, providing security at the Capitol for four months.  Major General Timothy Gowen says the Guard has had to cover those costs themselves, and they need that money back by the beginning of next month. Gowen has sent a letter to Senator Ben Cardin asking for help. "Obviously this was not an event anyone in the National Guard had planned for so there was not funding set aside for such activities," reads part of the letter from Gowen. "The funding to cover pay, allowance, and operational expens...

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has made millions of dollars in the stock market on companies she regulates, reports journalist Glenn Greenwald. Pelosi’s wealth has increased to $115 million from $41 million over the last 17 years with most of her and her husband Paul’s additional riches due to extremely lucrative decisions about when to buy and sell tech stocks. Over the last two years, almost 75% of the trading done by the Pelosis, more than $33 million, has been in Big Tech. Major legislation concerning the industry during the same time frame has been pending before the House, controlled by the committees that Pelosi oversees. Greenwald points out as a blatant conflict of interest, for example, that buying and selling in just Apple accounted for 17.7% of th...
A close ally and former campaign adviser to former President Trump was arrested on Tuesday and charged with several criminal counts over allegedly working as an undisclosed foreign lobbyist on behalf of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Federal prosecutors said Thomas Barrack, who also served as the chairman of Trump's inaugural committee, worked to influence his 2016 campaign, and later the administration, to push for policy proposals that were favorable to the UAE. "The defendants repeatedly capitalized on Barrack’s friendships and access to a candidate who was eventually elected President, high-ranking campaign and government officials, and the American media to advance the policy goals of a foreign government without disclosing their true allegiances,” M...
Twitter suspended Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s account for 12 hours after saying she posted tweets violating its policy on sharing misleading information about COVID-19. The company said the Georgia Republican’s account was to be suspended on Tuesday after she posted tweets Sunday and Monday that the company said contained misinformation about the disease and vaccines, reports The New York Times. Twitter suspended Green’s account on Monday and said the block would be lifted Tuesday. The site left the posts in question online, but tagged them as containing misinformation about the disease and vaccines and gave a link for information from health officials. In one of the tweets, posted early Monday, Greene argued that COVID-19 is not dangerous for people y...
Baltimore County Inspector General Kelly Madigan issued her second annual report when she spoke with WBAL's C4 and Dan Joseph Tuesday morning. She said that her office, which consists herself and an assistant, received 83 complaints and opened a file on 14 of them. Madigan believes her best contribution to the administration was the return on investment, and she calculated that her office costs each Baltimore County resident about 35 cents for the fiscal year 2021. Regarding how some people view her and her office, Madigan said, "Compliance is not always popular…My job is to protect Baltimore County's taxpayers dollars...I try to do it fairly and respectfully, but sometimes I have to ask tough questions and that's what I was hired to do." An argument by some Baltim...
Tuesday marks the seventh day Maryland's new daily COVID-19 numbers have increased by more than 100 cases. The Maryland Health Department recorded 155 new cases Tuesday morning, most of the new cases stem from the delta variant. The death and hospitalization metrics have been increasing slowly and steadily, whereas daily new cases are the biggest difference compared to a month ago.  A new poll from the Economist and YouGov may provide some new clues about why the government is suddenly having such a tough time persuading more people to get vaccinated. The poll finds one in five people say they believe the government is using the COVID-19 vaccine to inject microchips into Americans, and 51% of those people say it's either definitely or probably true that there a...
Ofakim - On Monday afternoon, just after 11 a.m., United Hatzalah volunteer EMT Tova Shtiglitz was finishing up a shift at the local Corona hotel in Netivot when she was suddenly alerted to a nearby medical emergency. United Hatzalah’s Dispatch and Command Center located Tova a three-minute drive away from the location of the emergency. A 70-year-old woman had collapsed in a cemetery and witnesses called for help.  Tova quickly decontaminated herself properly and jumped in her car. Arriving alongside volunteer EMT Avraham Sabag, the two attempted to enter the cemetery from the main entrance which was blocked and filled with people. The two local EMTs walked around the gate to a second entrance near the back and entered the cemetery on foot.  Together, Tova and Avraham sea...
An NYPD investigation has been launched into an act of vandalism that shattered the window of a Williamsburg yeshiva. Sources told VIN News that the incident took place at the Viznitz yeshiva on the corner of Flatbush and Flushing avenues on July 15th and wasn’t noticed until this morning. Surveillance footage released by Williamsburg Shomrim shows what appears to be a masked woman in a baseball cap taking a hammer out of her shoulder bag and banging it three times against a window of the school building until the glass finally breaks.
Some 1,372 new Coronavirus cases were registered in Israel on Monday – the highest since March - the Health Ministry announced Tuesday, as the authorities prepared to bring back the green pass system. The coronavirus cabinet is expected to meet on Wednesday to discuss the strategy to contain the current outbreak. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz are expected to push to bring back the green pass for all indoor gatherings over 100 participants, in addition to the “Happy Badge” that will come into effect for weddings and parties on the same day, under the responsibilities of the hall owners. Both systems grant access to such gatherings only to individuals vaccinated, recovered or with a negative coronavirus test performed in the prev...
Amidst politics, the coronavirus, and summer vacation, my brother-in-law Yisrael Meir enlightened me with this thought: We are accustomed to examining events as they happen in the here and now. It seems to us that the closer we are to what is happening, the better we understand it. A competent commentator, after all, must respond online immediately. If you blinked instead of sending a tweet right away - you missed the boat. One of the beautiful aspects of the book of Deuteronomy, which we started reading this week, is that the Torah itself shows us the correct way to examine reality. We must look at everything from a historical perspective. It could be said that in the book of Deuteronomy nothing happens. Moshe Rabbeinu talks, yet his long speech is nothing other than a sober look at the ev...
When Moshe Rabbeinu davens to come into Eretz Yisroel, he is pleading with Hashem for a matnas chinam, a free gift. He has no claims and does not come with demands or expectations. When we daven, we need to remember that we are not entitled to anything; rather, we are relying on Hashem's graciousness. Our structure of Tefilah in golus is very different than our service in the Beis Hamikdash when we offered korbanos to Hashem through a dwelling place on this earth. Nowadays, when we turn to Hashem and ask Him to provide us with our needs, we recognize His singular power and create a throne for Him through our requests. Click here to listen
There has been much discussion of Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid’s speech before the 7th Global Forum on Combatting Anti-Semitism on July 14, in which he offered a new definition of antisemitism. It is certainly true that slave traders who threw human beings into the ocean, and African tribes who slaughtered other tribes and Muslims who kill other Muslims are evildoers. And that those who have hated and attacked and killed Jews over the centuries were and are evildoers too. But to wrap all deranged murderers and haters into a neat malodorous package does a grave disservice to the most ancient, multifaceted and tenacious hatred, one that persists even into lives of Jews around the globe today. It does a grave disservice to history. To note that antisemitism is unique an...
In Devarim 4:9 the posuk tells us one should be careful and guard your soul. In 4:15 the posuk says guard your souls very much. In Berachos 32b we learn from both these pesukim that a person should not put himself in danger. There are a number of circumstances in which the concept of sakana dictates what we do or don’t do.  Liquids should not be left open (giluy). Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah 116:1 says that in our day and age it is allowed, but the Pischei Teshuva brings in the name of the Shela that someone who values his life should stay away from it. The Gra was also very makpid on this. The Rambam in Shmiras Hanefesh 11:7,8 says liquids includ...
As dining has opened up, face mask restrictions have eased and the state's state of emergency has expired, Marylanders have hit the roads, filled airports and are otherwise on the move this summer. Travel numbers are close to pre-pandemic levels, the Maryland Department of Transportation said. In Maryland, highway volumes topped 2019 levels the first week of July, the agency said. One area where traffic has not fully rebounded is in the use of taxis and rideshare services, which remain down. At the height of the pandemic, statewide highway travel fell by as much as 50 percent and passenger traffic at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport dropped more than 90 percent as Marylanders heeded Gov. Larry Hogan's call to limit travel to help...
