The U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) has hired a retired Secret Service agent to oversee event planning, as the department works to make changes following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
The agency announced the hiring of Wesley Schwark in a statement on Thursday. The department said he will “lead USCP’s major event planning, to include National Special Security Events.”
“Mr. Schwark’s 25-year law enforcement career will help us improve our now Department-wide operations planning processes,” acting Chief Yogananda Pittman said in a statement.

President Biden will host German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the White House next month, his third in-person visit with a foreign leader in Washington since taking office at the beginning of this year.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced Friday that Biden would meet with Merkel, who is in her final year as chancellor, on July 15 and that the visit “will affirm the deep bilateral ties between the United States and Germany.”

Organizers of the contentious flag march set to take place in Yerushalayim next week said Friday that they reached an agreement with the police on the nationalist parade’s route.
The march will begin on Tuesday at HaNevi’im St. and head toward Damascus Gate, where participants will dance with Israeli flags.

In an unlikely twist to Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-Minn.) recent equation of democratic states such as the United States and Israel with the Taliban and Hamas, the latter group has taken the lawmaker to task following her comments regarding alleged war crimes.
While Omar faced mild critique from 12 of her Jewish Democrat House colleagues who asked her to “clarify her statement,” Hamas labeled her comments “peculiar” and even her attempt to walk them back was not enough for Gaza’s terrorist rulers, reported The Times of Israel.

Veteran TV newsman and former University of Alabama football player Christopher Sign died Saturday morning in an apparent suicide, according to police.
At 8:13 a.m. Saturday, the Hoover 911 center received a call of a person down at a residence on Scout Trace. Hoover police and fire personnel arrived to find the 45-year-old Sign dead.
Hoover police Lt. Keith Czeskleba said the death is being investigated as a suicide.

Parah Adumah is the quintessential chok, a law which is impossible for us to understand. It is atonement for the chet ha'egel-the mother cow is coming to 'clean up' the mess of her child. This is the opposite of Kibbud Av V'em, a mitzvah that is easily understood, and one in which the child is doing for the parents. For the nations of the world, it is very easy to honor one's parent, as the honor of Hashem does not come into the equation. However, as Bnei Yisroel, we must keep all mitzvos whether we understand them or not, and our ability to honor our parents can be limited because of our necessary deference to Hashem.

Israeli intelligence agencies stressed to Jordanians they were not involved in alleged plot
The Israeli, US and Saudi Arabia governments sought to pressure King Abdullah II of Jordan into accepting the Trump administration’s efforts for Middle East peace last year, The Washington Post reported Saturday.
At least in part due to these efforts, Abdullah lost domestic standing, leading to the alleged plot against the king earlier this year, which resulted in several members of his family being arrested, the paper said.

Technology would equip Tehran, and by extension its proxies, with greater surveillance capability
President Vladimir Putin on Friday denied a US media report that Russia is set to deliver an advanced satellite system to Iran that will vastly improve its spying capabilities.
The Washington Post reported Thursday that Moscow is preparing to give Iran a Kanopus-V satellite with a high-resolution camera, allowing that Islamic republic to monitor facilities of its adversaries across the Middle East.
Putin, who is expected to hear a range of complaints from US President Joe Biden when they meet Wednesday in Geneva, dismissed the report as "garbage."

The Biden administration late on Thursday restored a $929 million grant for California’s high speed rail that former president Donald Trump revoked in 2019.
The parties, which also include the California High-Speed Rail Authority and the U.S. Transportation Department, agreed to restore the grant within three days, according to the settlement agreement .

The U.S. budget deficit hit a record $2.06 trillion through the first eight months of this budget year as coronavirus relief programs drove spending to all-time highs.
The shortfall this year is 9.7% higher than the $1.88 trillion deficit run up over the same period a year ago, the Treasury Department said Wednesday in its monthly budget report.
The report showed that spending from October through May totaled a record $4.67 trillion, up 19.7% from the same period a year ago. Government tax revenue was up 29.1% to $2.61 trillion, compared to the same period a year ago.
