Each name of a Jewish holiday is iconic. The name Pesach evokes the transformative sacrifice which launched our national liberation. The name Chanukah captures the re-dedication of the newly purified Mikdash, after it was defiled by Greek invaders. By contrast, the name Purim seems quite arbitrary. The word purim refers to the raffle which Haman conducted to select a suitable date for his planned genocide. This trivial detail – the method of selecting a date for his attack- seems irrelevant to the overall saga. There are so many better options to name this holiday and yet the lottery of Haman forms the name of this chag. What is so symbolic about the lottery? The significance of the lottery is best appreciated within the broader context of Shushan and the drama of megillat Esther. E...
The Senate on Tuesday voted to confirm Linda Thomas-Greenfield as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, after a difficult confirmation process that saw delay and scrutiny over a speech in which she praised China’s approach in Africa. Thomas-Greenfield was confirmed in a 78-20 vote. The timeline for her confirmation had been delayed after Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, used a procedural move to push the Senate Foreign Relations Committee vote from earlier this month. Baltimore, MD - Feb. 23, 2021 - Taanis Esther is a day of tefillah. The power of the Jewish People comes from the bracha (blessing) of Yitzchok, Hakol Kol Yaakov, the voice is the voice of Yaakov. Our weapon to fight against Eisav is our tefillos. On Purim, Mordechai, the descendant of Yaakov, fights against Haman, the descendant of Eisav. We spent three days fasting and praying that Hashem should send us a salvation. Esther does not tell Achashveirosh her request immediately to teach us that sometimes, the answer to our prayers is not immediate, but Hashem gathers our tefillos and always listens and responds. The Pri Megadim 695 says that one has to educate his son in the mitzvah of mishloach manos. It stands to reason that the same obligation would apply to matanos l’evyonim. If the son has no money of his own, does the father do the mitzvah for him as we see regarding the mitzvah of tzitzis? Regarding tzitzis, the father buys it for his son. However, over here, should the father be makneh the money to his son as a part of chinuch so he can do the mitzvah properly?  When it comes to the mitzvah of tzedaka, the Rema in Yoreh Deah 251:3 says that one’s own livelihood comes first and if one can’t afford to give tzedaka because he doesn’t have enough...
Corona hit. Everyone was trying to find themselves. To find meaning. To stay sane. It was a time when so much of our regular lives was shuttered. Musicians were among those hard hit by the shutdown, both economically, with concerts and recordings cancelled, and emotionally, from finding their creative outlets stopped in their tracks. At some point I recalled that over 30 years ago I had written a song to the words of the prayer — recited three times a day — for health and healing. Refaenu. Heal us. For some reason, I had never done anything with the song. Even my wife and kids had never heard it. With the kind sponsorship of my mother (may she live and be well), I decided to give a little work to the musicians, arrangers and studio personnel, and hopefully provide some sm...
