The Texas Republican senator John Cornyn warned on Saturday that Donald Trump’s second impeachment could lead to the prosecution of former Democratic presidents if Republicans retake Congress in two years’ time.
“If it is a good idea to impeach and try former presidents, what about former Democratic presidents when Republicans get the majority in 2022?” Cornyn, a 19-year veteran of the Senate who last year tried to distance himself from Trump when it seemed his seat was at risk, tweeted at majority leader Chuck Schumer.

President Biden has selected his longtime primary care doctor to serve as the new head White House physician, a position that gained renewed prominence during the Trump administration.
Kevin O’Connor, who has been Biden’s personal doctor since 2009, will serve as the top doctor to the president, a White House official confirmed.
O’Connor served 22 years in the Army and for more than a decade at the White House. He was supposed to spend three years there, but extended his White House stint by eight years at Biden’s request.

Those 65 years and up are eligible for the coronavirus vaccine in Maryland, except in two jurisdictions.
MARYLAND — More than 2 million Marylanders are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, according to state health officials. As the number of those qualifying for the vaccine increases, however, availability of vaccinations has not kept up.
The state is receiving about 10,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine a day from the federal government, which is not meeting demand, according to the Maryland Department of Health.
Nearly 5.5 percent of the population in Maryland has received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, the state health department reported Monday.

The rosh yeshiva, who is 98 ka”h, is remaining at home, rather than going to the hospital, as he is said to be in stable condition.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts will not preside over former President Trump’s Senate impeachment trial, which is scheduled to begin in earnest on Feb. 8.

The National Park Service is investigating why the Washington Monument would have gone dark Sunday night.
“The exterior lights of the Washington Monument are currently out,” the Park Service tweeted Sunday night. “We are investigating and will have them restored as soon as possible.” The agency has not yet reported why the lights would have gone out.
All of the monument’s external lights were out except for the red lights at its top that are there as a warning to aircraft, reports Fox News.
The outage sparked speculation on social media from several Twitter users.

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) will not seek reelection to a third term in 2022, he announced Monday morning.
Portman plans to make the announcement at a press conference in Cincinnati. In a statement, Portman cited political partisanship as a factor in his decision.
“We live in an increasingly polarized country where members of both parties are being pushed further to the right and further to the left, and that means too few people who are actively looking to find common ground,” he said. “This is not a new phenomenon, of course, but a problem that has gotten worse over the past few decades.”

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) is filing a counter-complaint on Monday against seven Democratic senators who asked the Ethics Committee to investigate him.
Hawley sent a letter on Monday to Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.) arguing that the seven senators who submitted an ethics complaint against Hawley and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) last week issued a "frivolous complaint to accomplish impermissible partisan purposes."

Dominion Voting Systems on Monday filed a lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani alleging that the former New York City mayor spread numerous defamatory statements about the voting machine company while he helped lead former President Trump’s failed post-election legal campaign.

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a pair of emoluments lawsuits against former President Trump, ruling that the cases are moot now that he has left office.
