Baltimore, MD - Jan. 19, 2021 - A little more than three weeks ago, we lost a treasured friend, prolific speaker, and community advocate. Rebbetzin Dr. Aviva Weisbord, A’H, was all that and more to her staff at SHEMESH, a program of the Associated. Here are some thoughts and insights that they shared as they recalled their beloved Executive Director, Aviva.

As part of the city improvement program led by Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, the municipality has announced it is embarking on a lighting project for historic buildings throughout the city.
Included in the first phase of the project, the YMCA, the Tomb of David, the Great Synagogue, and the Tower of David will be illuminated.
The project will be completed by June 2021 and will cost about NIS 6 million.

Redemption was well under way as the entire country of Egypt had been ravaged by interminable calamities. Once a superpower capable of supporting the entire planet, the Egyptian empire was gradually reduced to rubble. Moshe’s fame was quickly spreading throughout Egypt as popular opinion swung against Pharo’s inflexible policies. However, despite all this rapid change, the Jews remained muted and sidelined. Before the makkot began, the Jews were incapable of rallying around Moshe's call to freedom; they were burdened by their bondage and their spirit was too compressed to believe in a future vision. During the first seven makkot they were invisible. How would this incapacitated people be awakened to the accelerating redemption?

The Posuk in Shmos 12:17 says one should guard their matzos. Rashi quotes a Mechilta that says don’t read the word “matzos,” but rather read the word “mitzvos.” The same way we make sure that our matza does not become chametz, so too, a person has to make sure to do a mitzva right away. Rashi adds from Yuma 33a and Megilla 6b that from here we also learn the concept of “ein mavirin al hamitzvos.”

All Israelis aged 40 and over can now be vaccinated against the coronavirus, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

The first dose of the Pfizer vaccine offers less protection against COVID-19 than US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer originally claimed, Israel's coronavirus czar told Hebrew media on Tuesday.
"Many people have been infected between the first and second injections of the vaccine," Nachman Ash told Army Radio, adding that the first dose is "less effective than we thought" and "lower than [the data] presented by Pfizer."

Arabic media report dozens injured in attack attributed to the US
At least nine people were killed and dozens more injured early Tuesday in the town of Jufr al-Nasr, some 40 miles southwest of Baghdad, Iraq, in alleged airstrikes in the area.

President Trump is preparing to issue dozens of pardons before President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in at noon on Wednesday, with the big question being whether Trump will preemptively pardon himself before he leaves office.

Maryland and Virginia both sent National Guard troops to Washington to help handle the Capitol riots. Since then, troops have remained in the city, however, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied both states' request for emergency declarations.

An Ohio police officer has died after a shooting standoff with a suspect, the Toledo Police Department said Monday.
Chief George Kral identified the officer as 24-year-old Brandon Stalker. According to Kral, Stalker was hit once by the suspect, who brandished two firearms while leaving a house in which he had been barricaded.

The former Florida scientist who accused state officials of manipulating coronavirus data turned herself in on Sunday and then announced she has tested positive for the virus, according to a new report.
Rebekah Jones, a state data scientist who was fired late last year, turned herself in to Leon County police days after a warrant was issued for her arrest. Jones is charged with one count of offenses against users of computers, computer systems, computer networks and electronic devices, CNN reported.
Jones was released on Monday and reportedly announced to reporters that she had tested positive for coronavirus as she left the Leon County Detention Facility after posting bail.

Since sending Maryland National Guard troops into Washington to help handle the Capitol riots, Gov. Larry Hogan has checked on them and was briefed on how they will handle Inauguration Day on Wednesday.
“The State of Maryland will do everything we can to protect the transition of power," Hogan said in a news release. "We continue to work closely with allied law enforcement and federal partners to support the inauguration. I am looking forward to attending the ceremonies on Wednesday to represent the people of Maryland.”
