President-elect Joe Biden’s pick for a top Department of Justice civil rights position is under fire after racist and black supremacist claims she made in college surfaced this week.
Kirsten Clarke, an attorney who leads the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, was nominated by Biden last Wednesday to serve as the Assistant Attorney General to lead the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. Clarke has previously worked as a trial lawyer for the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, and worked in the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

America’s most senior general Mark Milley and the entire Joint Chiefs of Staff, which is comprised of the heads of each military branch, issued a statement Tuesday condemning the violent invasion of the US Capitol last week and reminding service members of their obligation to support and defend the Constitution and reject extremism.
“We witnessed actions inside the Capitol building that were inconsistent with the rule of law. The rights of freedom of speech and assembly do not give anyone the right to resort to violence, sedition and insurrection,” they wrote in the statement.

Facebook will begin removing all content that mentions the phrase “stop the steal,” a full 69 days after Election Day.
The social media giant said in a blog post that it will ramp up enforcement against the phrase because it was used by those who participated in last week’s riots at the US Capitol.
“With continued attempts to organize events against the outcome of the US presidential election that can lead to violence, and use of the term by those involved in Wednesday’s violence in DC, we’re taking this additional step in the lead up to the inauguration,” Guy Rosen, Facebook’s VP of integrity, wrote in a post about the company’s preparation for Inauguration Day.

Capitol security officials are warning lawmakers that thousands of extremist supporters of President Trump are planning to try to storm the Capitol ahead of President-elect Joe Biden‘s inauguration.
Lawmakers were told of four specific armed threats against the Capitol, White House and Supreme Court during a call late Monday night, according to a source familiar with the discussion.
The warnings come less than a week after a mob of Trump supporters succeeded in breaching the Capitol building, interrupting the counting of Electoral College votes and sending lawmakers, staff and journalists scrambling for safety.

House Republican leadership doesn’t plan to tell its members to vote against impeaching President Trump or the Democrat-led resolution calling on Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office, a senior GOP aide confirmed to The Hill on Tuesday.
House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) told members in a conference call the impeachment vote was a “vote of conscience,” according to a source familiar with her remarks.

Now that the process is underway to vaccinate people against COVID-19, more Americans say they are eager to get a shot, according to a new Axios-Ipsos Coronavirus Index survey.
The poll this week shows that 60% of Americans are now saying they are likely to get the shot as soon as they are able to, up 8% since mid-December, indicating that some of the vaccine hesitancy was because people were wanting to wait and see about the vaccine and not digging in to oppose it, reports Axios.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Tuesday named nine Democrats to serve as impeachment managers as the House prepares to vote Wednesday to impeach President Trump over his role inciting last week’s Capitol riot.
The impeachment managers will argue the House’s case during the Senate trial. Pelosi did not indicate when the House will send the article of impeachment to the Senate.

The per capita price for two doses of the COVID-19 vaccines, developed by pharmaceutical companies Pfizer-BioNtech and Moderna, is estimated to cost $47 for every Israeli citizen, the Kan public broadcaster reported on Monday.
In total, the Jewish state will pay at least NIS 1 billion ($316.5 million) for the treatment, the public broadcaster noted.

The Department of Justice is working to build sedition and conspiracy charges against some of the rioters who stormed the Capitol last week, the top federal prosecutor for Washington, D.C., said Tuesday.
Michael Sherwin, the acting U.S. attorney for D.C., said in a press conference that he has assembled a team of national security attorneys to explore some of the harshest charges his office could pursue in the wake of the riot that overran the Capitol and left five people dead Wednesday.
"Just yesterday, our office organized a strike force of very senior national security prosecutors and public corruption prosecutors," Sherwin told reporters. "Their only marching orders from me are to build seditious and conspiracy charges related to the most heinous acts that occurred in the Capitol."

Six House Republicans on Tuesday introduced a resolution to censure President Trump over his role in stoking last week’s violent riots at the U.S. Capitol and efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The group, led by Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), argued that a censure was the most effective way to punish Trump, arguing that the current impeachment effort being waged in the House over the violence is likely to result in the president’s acquittal in the Senate and could further divide a significantly fractured nation.

Navy divers recovered the flight data recorder from a downed Indonesian jet on Tuesday with authorities hoping it will help explain what sent the plane with 62 people aboard into the Java Sea shortly after takeoff.
Divers brought the flight data recorder, known as one of the black boxes, from the ocean floor where it was buried in seabed mud under other debris from Sriwijaya Air Flight 182, The Associated Press reported that navy Chief Adm. Yudo Margono said. Tuesday’s recovery operation involved at least 160 divers.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said he thinks President Trump has committed impeachable offenses following the violent attacks on the Capitol building last week, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
The reported comments from the majority leader come as Republicans grapple with how to respond to Democratic impeachment efforts and the fallout from the deadly Capitol riots last week.
