Rabbinic group thanks Department of Justice for Airmont Suit Baltimore, MD, Dec. 3, 2020 —  Responding to the lawsuit filed by the US Department of Justice against the Village of Airmont, NY for religious discrimination against its Orthodox Jewish residents, Rabbi Pesach Lerner, President of the Coalition for Jewish Values, issued the following statement:  We are sincerely grateful that Attorney General William Barr has filed suit against Airmont— as he did as George H.W. Bush's Attorney General in 1991, the year Airmont was incorporated as an independent village. Airmont has a long history of ugly bias against the Jewish community, and clearly the Attorney General is as frustrated by this as we in the Jewish community, along with all who value religious freedo...

Yehezkel Gabay is a United Hatzalah volunteer EMT hailing from the city of Tzfat (Safed).  A few weeks ago, Yehezkel was learning Talmud in his local synagogue when he received an alert from his communications device, notifying him about a medical emergency occurring right near his location. Although Yehezkel rarely gets a chance to catch up on his learning, the dedicated volunteer closed his book and rushed outside to his ambucycle.  While Yehezkel was on his way, another United Hatzalah volunteer contacted Yehezkel and explained to him that he was at the location of the incident. Passers-by told him that they saw a woman fall from a window at the top floor of an apartment building, but there was no body on the ground. Recognizing the address and the description of the building...

'The United States has commitments. It is not in a position to set conditions' Iran will resume its compliance with a 2015 deal aimed at preventing it from developing nuclear weapons on the condition that the incoming administration of presumptive US President-elect Joe Biden does not seek to amend its conditions, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Thursday.  US President Donald Trump quit the pact in 2018, saying it did not do enough to curb Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs or its promotion of terrorism throughout the Middle East; whereas Biden has said he will rejoin it if Tehran first resumes strict compliance. He has also said he would work with allies “to strengthen and extend it.” Join BJL on WhatsApp Status: ...

President-elect Joe Biden endorsed a $908 billion stimulus proposal by a bipartisan group of lawmakers, saying it “wouldn’t be the answer” but would provide immediate relief to those suffering from the Covid recession. Biden, speaking to a virtual roundtable of workers and small-business owners affected by the virus-related downturn, called on Congress Wednesday to pass a robust Covid-relief bill in the lame-duck session, which he said would “at best only be a down payment” on a more comprehensive bill once he takes office.Join BJL on WhatsApp Status: Click here to Join BJL status for engagements, births, deals, levayos, events & more Join BJL on WhatsApp Groups: Click here to Join an official BJL WhatsApp group for breaking news as it happens But he ...

I remember well that momentous afternoon in 2003, when a truck pulled into our driveway to collect our family’s blue Ford Taurus wagon. After 15 years of dedicated service, the reliable vehicle, affectionately dubbed “Taurus Hamishpacha” by my father, finally returned its soul to the Great Car Dealership In The Sky. By the time it finally and irreparably died, it was worth far more as scrap metal and parts than in any other form. As the car was hoisted onto the flatbed, all of us became deeply emotional- some family members even began to cry... In this week’s Torah reading, we are introduced to Devorah, the maidservant of Rivkah. Unfortunately, our acquaintance with her is fleeting, because we only meet her to learn of her death. There were 3,157 COVID-19 deaths reported Wednesday — a jump of about 20% from the previous record of 2,603 set on April 15 — and health care systems are struggling to support the weight of worsening impacts. In total, 273,799 people in the U.S. have died of the virus and more than 13.9 million have been infected, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Health experts project the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths to worsen as the holidays bring people together and weather moves them indoors. The surge has pushed records set one day to be broken the next. The spike in coronavirus deaths came on the same day the number of people hospitalized broke 100,000, according to the Covid Tracking Project. The number of hospitalizations had been steadil...
President-elect Joe Biden’s Cabinet is quickly taking shape, but there is growing dissent from Black lawmakers and activists surrounding his picks, as only two Black Americans have been chosen so far. At the moment, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, tapped to be the country’s next ambassador to the United Nations, and Cecilia Rouse, Biden’s pick to chair the Council of Economic Advisers, are the only Black members of the burgeoning Cabinet. Advocates have made it clear that they want to see the administration put Democrats’ staunchest voting bloc at the center right from Day One. In his first speech as president-elect, Biden made Black voters a promise: that he’d have their backs. Join BJL on WhatsApp Status: Click here to Join BJL status for engagements, ...

Gov. Larry Hogan spoke on GMA: "Good Morning America" about COVID-19 vaccine distribution plans. Maryland has been allocated about 155,000 coronavirus vaccines, but Hogan says with about 300,000 front-line health care workers, it's "not enough."
