Jerusalem, Israel - Nov. 27, 2020 - In Israel, the constantly changing regulations for COVID-19 have caused confusion. The numbers of positive tests for the virus are rising, but more stores and malls were allowed to open. The weather forecast had predicted rain for Friday, November 27, 2020. However, the sun was shining in the morning and the temperature was pleasant.  Erev Shabbat Vayeitzei was a good time to head back to the Old City.  Walking past Paris Fountain and the site of the anti-government protests by night, one can see the progress on hotel construction on King David Street. Though many Israelis are not familiar with Thanksgiving, Black Friday has become a major advertised event. In Mamilla Mall the line for the store ZARA was so long to ask if t...

Yaakov received the blessings from his father but along with them, the scorn of his brother Esav. He fled to Charan to seek safety and sanctuary and a wife. “And Jacob left Beer Sheba, and he went to Haran. And he arrived at the place and lodged there because the sun had set, and he took some of the stones of the place and placed [them] at his head, and he lay down in that place. (Genesis 28:10-11).” The Talmud (Chullin 91b) paints a dramatic picture: “And Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran.” And it is written thereafter: “And he encountered the place, and he slept there, because the sun had set.” When Jacob arrived at Haran, he said: Is it possible that I passed a place where my fathers prayed, and I did not pray there? New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is blaming the new conservative majority on the Supreme Court for a decision late Wednesday against his state's COVID-19 restrictions on churches and places of worship.  In remarks to reporters on Thursday, Cuomo said he thinks the ruling “was really just an opportunity for the court to express its philosophy and politics" and that it was making a "statement" with the vote. The court's five conservatives, including Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who was confirmed just before the Nov. 3 presidential election and replaced liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, ruled against the New York measures. Chief Justice John Roberts and the court's three liberal justices were in the minority. Join BJL on WhatsApp Status: Cl...
