JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The Kollel Chabad volunteer who called up Yaakov Wexler, an elderly Jerusalem resident last month to find out how he was coping with the lockdown, did not expect to hear such an astonishing life story from him. Yaakov told the volunteer, whose organization provides daily hot meals for him, that for nearly 50 years he had served as a Polish priest.
Yaakov’s story begins in the Stare Swiecany (Shvintzian) ghetto near Vilna in February 1943 where he was born, the second son of Yaakov and Batya Wexler, just over a month before the Jews of the ghetto were deported to their deaths in the Ponar forest in April 1943. The Covid-19 death toll linked to U.S. nursing homes and other long-term care facilities has surpassed 100,000, according to a Wall Street Journal tally of data from around the U.S.
The coronavirus disease is particularly risky for elderly people with underlying health conditions, and nursing homes house such residents in close confines. Outbreaks have also hit other kinds of senior homes like assisted-living facilities, and the deaths stemming from long-term care outbreaks comprise nearly 40% of the more than 260,000 overall Covid-19 deaths recorded by Johns Hopkins University.

NEW YORK (VINnews) — Amazon Web Services (AWS) is currently suffering from an outage, taking a significant portion of the internet down with it.
Several AWS services were experiencing problems early Wednesday, according to its status page. This means that any app, site or service relying on AWS might also be down, too. Down Detector reported over 1,000 user complaints.

President-elect Joe Biden’s appointments appear to signal a “return of the Obama administration’s foreign policy,” which “had disastrous consequences for our nation,” Senate Armed Services Committee member Tom Cotton, R-Ark., warned on “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday.

A Pennsylvania state court issued an injunction Wednesday blocking any potential further certification of election results in the state, pending a hearing to be held Friday.
The order from Judge Patricia McCullough comes in the case brought by Pennsylvania voters including Rep. Former Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is calling for President Trump to accept the election results and move forward with a peaceful transfer of power to President-elect Joe Biden.
While speaking at the Bank of America’s virtual European Credit Conference on Tuesday, Ryan said he believes it’s time for Trump to acknowledge that “the General Services Administration ascertained the election” so Biden can begin the process of populating his future administration.

EMT Returning From Tel Mond Election Count Performs Successful CPR At Savidor Train Station In Tel Aviv
Tel Aviv - Just after 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning, United Hatzalah volunteer EMT Avraham Levy was returning home from staffing an all-night municipal election vote-count in the city of Tel Mond. He was driving one of the organization’s ambulances back from the event when he received an emergency alert from dispatch directing him to a man who had suffered a serious head injury while waiting for the train at Tel Aviv’s Savidor station. In spite of being on duty for more than 12 hours already, Levy flicked on the lights and sirens and headed to the train station a kilometer away. While en route, the dispatcher alerted Levy that CPR was in progress.

Purdue Pharma, the company that has been producing the opioid painkiller OxyContin for the past few decades, has pleaded guilty to three criminal charges, CBS News reports, following an ongoing saga of apportioning blame in what has been called an opioid epidemic, contributing to the deaths of around half a million people.
Last month, Purdue reached a $8.3 billion settlement and agreed to admit its guilt in enabling the supply of drugs “without legitimate medical purpose.” The U.S. Department of Justice said at the time that it would forgo most of the penalty money and channel it instead to communities severely impacted by the opioid crisis. To put it mildly, 2020 has been an interesting year, one that will likely go down in history for trials and tribulations that none of us could have ever imagined.
With no end to the madness in sight, I find myself contemplating the well-known Serenity Prayer, which was written nearly 100 years ago and, more recently, has become popular as a cornerstone of twelve-step programs. The words “G-d, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change” are timelier now than ever before as we wake up every morning wondering if our shuls will be allowed to stay open, if our kids will have school and which businesses and institutions will be forced to close indefinitely. ...

Jerusalem, Israel - Nov. 19, 2020 - The COVID-19 pandemic was beginning to spread around the world as the Michael Levin Base for lone soldiers and b'not sheirut opened to serve men and women without families in Israel who volunteer in the Israeli Defense Forces and for Volunteer Service. The planned grand opening was not the one envisioned by the staff and supporters of The Base. For Purim, there were six megillah readings and seudah. However, in Israel for Purim, the coronavirus kept people away from large celebrations and crowded spaces.
