Baltimore, MD - Sept. 24, 2020: The following was sent this morning to members of Shomrei Emunah: Halachic Guidance from Rabbi Marwick for Yom Kippur 5781 Mikvah for Men on Erev Yom Kippur: Many men have a personal custom to go to the mikvah before Yom Kippur.  Mens mikvaos tend to be crowded and difficult to sanitize.  Therefore, unless one can secure a private appointment, I do not think it advisable for men to go to the Mikvah his year.  Gedolei HaPoskim advise that, in these unusual circumstances, standing under a running shower – with the water flowing over your head and body for 3-4 minutes is an acceptable substitute. (This leniency applies only to men’s immersion because it is a custom, not a halachic requirement.) Medical Concerns and F...

A few weeks ago, just after 12 p.m., in the city of Kiryat Malachi in Israel’s southern region, a 35-year-old man was working at his job in a steel factory using a slicing machine, when he accidentally turned the machine to the wrong setting. The faster speed caused a piece of sharp steel to snap off and slice his left arm. United Hatzalah volunteer EMT Ben-Hur Malcan was at work when he got the emergency alert from United Hatzalah’s Dispatch and Command Center notifying him of the emergency. Ben-Hur rushed to the factory, arriving in just under three minutes together with a number of other volunteers. He entered a scene of pure chaos. Ben Hur saw that the local team of responders were at a loss of how to help treat the man as the steel was still embedded inside his arm. The s...

BROOKLYN (VINnews) – A second lockdown is starting to emerge as a real possibility in several areas of Brooklyn and Queens, where the number of confirmed COVID cases has been rising steadily in recent weeks. Speaking today at a press conference alongside Mayor Bill de Blasio, New York City’s Health + Hospitals CEO and president Dr. Mitchell Katz discussed the uptick in the “Ocean Parkway Cluster”, which includes Borough Park, Midwood and Bensonhurst, Williamsburg and Far Rockaway, where positive rates have tripled over the last six weeks, and Kew Gardens, where COVID cases have doubled over the same time period. Dr. Katz, who grew up and attended a synagogue in the Ocean Parkway area and still has relatives living nearby, urged residents to take the necessary preca...
Scientists in Houston on Wednesday released a study of more than 5,000 genetic sequences of the coronavirus, which reveals the virus’s continual accumulation of mutations, one of which may have made it more contagious. That mutation is associated with a higher viral load among patients upon initial diagnosis, the researchers found. The study, which has not been peer-reviewed, was posted Wednesday on the preprint server MedRxiv. It appears to be the largest single aggregation of genetic sequences of the virus in the United States thus far. A larger batch of sequences was published earlier this month by scientists in the United Kingdom, and, like the Houston study, concluded that a mutation that changes the structure of the “spike protein” on the surface of the ...
