Baltimore, MD - Sept. 23, 2020 — Baltimore City Council President Brandon M. Scott released the following statement in response to the indictment of one out of the three police officers who killed Breonna Taylor in Kentucky, which along with the death of George Floyd, sparked massive civil rights protests against police brutality and systemic racism:
“An interaction with the police should not be a death sentence. The fact that this has been ongoing for hundreds of years is no excuse. Black people cannot be forced to live in fear of the police.

After the closure of the BMG Shuk was announced, plans were immediately put into place to open a new Shuk to enable thousands to benefit from the Shuk atmosphere.
The Shuk will be taking place at Lake Terrace.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warned Tuesday that foreign malicious hackers will likely attempt to spread disinformation around election results later this year.
The agencies put out a public service announcement warning that delays in final tallies caused by a larger number of mail-in ballots and other factors could fuel the disinformation efforts online.

A cabinet meeting will be convened at 11:30 pm tonight, Wednesday, with the aim of approving the imposition of a "hermetic" lockdown in Israel, starting this Friday.
Citizens will be allowed to leave the house only to stock up on food and medicine, and only jobs defined as essential will be allowed to open.

Ryan Hooper, a high school social studies teacher in Baltimore City, recently wrote an article for The Dispatcher which addressed issues with virtual learning, especially those in “urban public-school districts.” In his interview today with C4 and Bryan Nehman, Hooper expanded on his article and thoughts about continuing virtual learning.
“In my view, we’re looking at a generational catastrophe here,” Hooper said in his interview. “I’m not exaggerating when I say that. This issue may seem like it’s a short-term problem right now, however, it’s going to have long-term consequences that will be detrimental for our society in the future.”

A Kentucky grand jury indicted one officer, Brett Hankison on three counts of wanton endangerment in the first degree in the shooting case of Breonna Taylor.
Louisville Metro Police Department officers Myles Cosgrove, Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and former officer Brett Hankison are the three officers who fired into Taylor's apartment. Officer Joshua Jaynes applied for the search warrant that led officers to Taylor's residence on the fateful night of March 13. Cosgrove and Mattingly were not indicted.
The announcement was made being made more than six months after 26-year-old Taylor's death prompted nationwide protests with demonstrators coast-to-coast repeating her name and celebrities and professional athletes wearing clothes bearing her likeness.

Larry Hogan, the Republican governor of Maryland, is urging the GOP to not push through a Supreme Court nominee so close to a presidential election.
"I don't think we should play partisan games with the Supreme Court," Hogan, who has led his blue state for two terms, said in an interview for The Texas Tribune Festival that aired Wednesday.
"I think it would be a mistake for the Senate to ram through a nominee before the election on a partisan line vote — just as I think it would also be a mistake for the Democrats to question the integrity of the court or any of the nominees or try to pack the court," he added.

Johnson & Johnson on Wednesday announced that it has begun Phase 3 trials of its potential coronavirus vaccine, making it the fourth potential vaccine to begin the late-stage trials in the United States.
The move adds to the array of potential vaccines that are being tested, with the hope that multiple candidates will prove safe and effective and help meet the enormous national and international demand.
While the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is not furthest along in the timeline, trailing candidates from Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca, it does have some potential advantages if it proves safe and effective.

DansDeals reader Miriam W. wanted to fly to Tel Aviv after Yom Kippur ended on 9/28. In Newark, the day of atonement runs from about 6:43pm on Sunday, 9/27 through 7:23pm on Monday, 9/28.
Flights can’t operate in or out of Israel on Yom Kippur, so United’s flights on 9/26 from Newark to Tel Aviv operate earlier than normal, there are no flights on 9/27 from Newark to Tel Aviv, and there is just one flight on 9/28 from Newark to Tel Aviv. Every year, prior to the Yom Tov of Sukkos, Bais Medrash Govoha hosts a dalet minim shuk on its campus in the heart of Lakewood, NJ. Each year, before Sukkos, from early in the morning until late at night, vendors sell dalet minim, sukkah decorations, and other items at the shuk.
That won’t happen this year, as organizers have called off the shuk due to Covid-19 concerns.
Just a week ago, organizers had announced that this year the shuk would be located in a tent on the yeshiva’s new parking lot, located next to the Klein Dormitory building. Organizers said that social distancing would be enforced, masks would be required, and temperatures would be checked.
But now those plans have been scrapped ...
