Jerusalem, Israel - Sept. 23, 2020 - “One person can make a difference and everyone should try” has receved tens of thousands of searches. Most often this quote is attributed to John F Kennedy or his brother Robert, the source, however, is uncertain.  What is certain is that Rabbi Pinchos Zelig Bak, z"l, in his short life made a difference. In 1977, the son of Muriel and Rabbi Benjamin Bak z"l, founding rabbi of Baltimore's Shomrei Emunah, was 33 years old when during the dancing on Purim, he fell and died almost instantly from a brain aneurism.  At the time of his sudden death, "Pinky" as he was fondly called, had just come back from Israel, traveled to visit his parents in Baltimore, and returned to New York City where he had started and l...
Ryan Hooper, a high school social studies teacher in Baltimore City, recently wrote an article for The Dispatcher which addressed issues with virtual learning, especially those in “urban public-school districts.” In his interview today with C4 and Bryan Nehman, Hooper expanded on his article and thoughts about continuing virtual learning. “In my view, we’re looking at a generational catastrophe here,” Hooper said in his interview. “I’m not exaggerating when I say that. This issue may seem like it’s a short-term problem right now, however, it’s going to have long-term consequences that will be detrimental for our society in the future.” Join BJL status for engagements, births, deals, levayos, events & more:  bi...

Between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, thousands of Jews normally visit the Kotel to place their special notes inside the ancient stones. In light of heavily restricted travel this year, The Jewish Agency launches campaign to be the conduit. Jerusalem, September 23, 2020 — The Jewish Agency for Israel has announced a global campaign to gather the prayers of Jews from Israel and around the world and place them among the stones of the Western Wall, a customary tradition for visitors to the holy site. Larry Hogan, the Republican governor of Maryland, is urging the GOP to not push through a Supreme Court nominee so close to a presidential election. "I don't think we should play partisan games with the Supreme Court," Hogan, who has led his blue state for two terms, said in an interview for The Texas Tribune Festival that aired Wednesday. "I think it would be a mistake for the Senate to ram through a nominee before the election on a partisan line vote — just as I think it would also be a mistake for the Democrats to question the integrity of the court or any of the nominees or try to pack the court," he added. Johnson & Johnson on Wednesday announced that it has begun Phase 3 trials of its potential coronavirus vaccine, making it the fourth potential vaccine to begin the late-stage trials in the United States.  The move adds to the array of potential vaccines that are being tested, with the hope that multiple candidates will prove safe and effective and help meet the enormous national and international demand.  While the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is not furthest along in the timeline, trailing candidates from Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca, it does have some potential advantages if it proves safe and effective.  Join BJL status for engagements, births, deals, levayos, events & more:  bit.ly/32HUBnJ Join an official BJL WhatsApp group for breaking news as...

Every year, prior to the Yom Tov of Sukkos, Bais Medrash Govoha hosts a dalet minim shuk on its campus in the heart of Lakewood, NJ. Each year, before Sukkos, from early in the morning until late at night, vendors sell dalet minim, sukkah decorations, and other items at the shuk. That won’t happen this year, as organizers have called off the shuk due to Covid-19 concerns. Just a week ago, organizers had announced that this year the shuk would be located in a tent on the yeshiva’s new parking lot, located next to the Klein Dormitory building. Organizers said that social distancing would be enforced, masks would be required, and temperatures would be checked. But now those plans have been scrapped ...

Irvine, CA, Sept. 23, 2020 — Responding to reports that Zoom had denied San Francisco State University usage of its video conferencing platform to host an event featuring the terrorist Leila Khaled, Rabbi Dov Fischer, Western Regional Vice President of the Coalition for Jewish Values and Rabbi of the Young Israel of Orange County in Irvine, CA, made the following statement:   The time is long overdue to realize that anti-Jewish bigotry, often hidden under the guise of 'anti-Zionism,' is just as unacceptable as other forms of hate. While we congratulate Zoom for denying a known terrorist access to its platform, we must also condemn the shameful failure of the president and administration of SFSU to make the simple, obvious, morally-upright decision that Zoom ...
